Book Impertinent Voices

Download or read book Impertinent Voices written by Liz Yorke and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do women’s poetic voices disrupt cultural forms? What is the relationship between female desire and the structures of poetry? Is ‘writing the body’ essentialist? Originally published in 1991, Impertinent Voices explores these questions in a sensitive and challenging study of female poetic strategies. Looking closely at the intricate and disturbing poetry of some of the twentieth century’s greatest poets – Sylvia Plath, Adrienne Rich, H. D., Audre Lorde – Liz Yorke uses the theories of Irigaray, Cixous and Kristeva to illuminate her own clear and original analyses of the ways in which feminist understandings have been produced within poetic and cultural forms. Although they struggle with a language which has traditionally excluded female sexuality and subjectivity, women poets refuse to be silenced. Their ‘impertinent’ voices break out of the constraining myths of the prevailing culture, precipitating new beginnings and new ways of looking at the world. Detailed close readings of the poems are here matched with a clear theoretical approach, making this both an exciting exploration of new terrain and an excellent introduction to the ways in which, for women writers, theoretical models and creative practice work hand in hand.

Book Liz Lochhead s Voices

Download or read book Liz Lochhead s Voices written by Robert Crawford and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first substantial study of the immensely popular writer and dramatist, Liz Lochhead. It examines the full range of her poetry and drama and supplies a variety of contexts - biographical, feminist and theatrical among others - in which her work can be read, heard, viewed and relished. One of the few books devoted to the work of a Scottish woman writer, and one of an even smaller number dealing in detail with contemporary Scottish drama, Liz Lochhead's Voices raises significant questions both for women's studies and Scottish literature in general. It includes the only extensive bibliography of Lochhead's writings, and is written in an accessible style which will appeal both to the student and to the general reader.

Book Hearts and Minds

  • Author : Michael Bibby
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press

  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Hearts and Minds written by Michael Bibby and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early 1960s to the mid-1970s was one of the most turbulent periods in American history. The U.S. military was engaged in its longest, costliest overseas conflict, while the home front was torn apart by riots, protests, and social activism. In the midst of these upheavals, an underground and countercultural press emerged, giving activists an extraordinary forum for a range of imaginative expressions. Poetry held a prominent place in this alternative media. The poem was widely viewed by activists as an inherently anti-establishment form of free expression, and poets were often in the vanguards of political activism. Hearts and Minds is the first book-length study of the poems of the Black Liberation, Women's Liberation, and GI Resistance movements during the Vietnam era. Drawing on recent cultural and literary theories, Bibby investigates the significance of images, tropes, and symbols of human bodies in activist poetry. Many key political slogans of the period--"black is beautiful," "off our backs"--foreground the body. Bibby demonstrates that figurations of bodies marked important sites of social and political struggle. Although poetry played such an important role in Vietnam-era activism, literary criticism has largely ignored most of this literature. Bibby recuperates the cultural-historical importance of Vietnam-era activist poetry, highlighting both its relevant contexts and revealing how it engaged political and social struggles that continue to motivate contemporary history. Arguing for the need to read cultural history through these "underground" texts, Hearts and Minds offers new grounds for understanding the recent history of American poetry and the role poetry has played as a medium of imaginative political expression.
