In addition, he was the Chancellor of the Exchequer four times, lasting over 12 years. This history covered a short span of Gladstone's life after his defeat in elections when he began a comeback based on opposition to the Ottoman Empire's response to the Bulgarian April Uprising. The book ends with a discussion on his proposal of home rule for Ireland, which was defeated in the House of Commons. Gladstone's admirers affectionately called him "The People's William," and he is regarded as one of Britain's most significant leaders.
