Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imperial Germany The series of chapters which he devotes to foreign policy is in fact a defence of welt-politik. It is a defence which is necessary; for welt-politik meant in his eyes the building of the German Fleet, and the German Fleet, with its avowed challenge to the secular policy of Great Britain, meant the estrangement of England and Germany, and as has now been made clear to all, the estrangement from England meant the almost complete isolation of Germany in Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inside the German Empire: In the Third Year of the War Throughout the world there is, and should be, deep interest in the conditions - economic, political, spiritual and military - under which Germany and her allies are sustaining themselves after more than two years of war. The facts and impressions contained in this book, gathered first-hand by the author, whose friendship I value and whose professional equipment I admire, form an important contribution to contemporaneous history and possess a referential value for the future. No subject to-day is more vital or worthier of serious attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Home Life in Germany Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Alfred Sidgwick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Life in Germany Germans often maintain that their country is more diverse than any other, and on that account more difficult to describe: a country Of many races and various rules held loosely together by language and more tightly of late years by the bond Of empire. But the truth probably is, that in our country we see and understand varieties, while in a foreign one we chiefly perceive what is unlike ourselves and common to the people we are Observing. For from the flux and welter Of qualities that form a modern nation certain traits survive peculiar to that nation: specialities Of feature, character, and habit, some seen at first sight, others only discovered after long and intimate acquaint ance. It is undoubtedly true that no one person can be at home in every corner Of the German Empire, or of any other empire. Book Imperial Germany and the Industrial Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book Imperial Germany and the Industrial Revolution Classic Reprint written by Thorstein Veblen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imperial Germany and the Industrial Revolution Among men who have no articulate acquaintance with matters of ethnology it is usual to speak of the several nations of Europe as district races. Even official documents and painstaking historians are not free from this confusion of ideas. In this colloquial use "race" is not conceived to be precisely synonymous with "nation," nor with "people;" although it would often be a difficult matter to make out from the context just what distinctive meaning is attached to one or another of these terms. They are used loosely and suggestively, and for may purposes they may doubtless be so used without compromise of confusion to the arguments; so that it might seem the part of reason to take them as they come, with allowance for such margin of error as necessarily attaches to their colloquial use, and without taking thought of a closer definition or a more discriminate use than what contents those who so find these terms convenient for use in all their colloquial ambiguity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bismarck: And the Foundation of the German Empire During this period, two works have appeared to which some reference is necessary. The value of Busch's Memoirs has been much exaggerated; ex cept for quite the last years of Bismarck's life they contain little new information which is of any im portance. Not only had a large portion of the book already been published in Busch's two earlier books, but many of the anecdotes and documents in those parts which were new had also been published elsewhere. Bismarck's own Memoirs have a very different value: not so much because of the new facts which they record, but because of the light they throw on Bismarck's character and on the attitude he adopted towards men and political problems. With his letters and speeches, they will always remain the chief source for our knowledge of his inner life. Download or read book Bismarck and the Origin of the German Empire Classic Reprint written by Frederick Maurice Powicke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bismarck and the Origin of the German Empire Development and the municipal reforms of Stein in l 808, the economic and political Liberals were unable to create a democratic Germany. The point of view which I have preferred is, I think, more important than any of these, partly because it enables us to keep the balance between the rival tendencies in Germany, partly because it enables us most readily to adjust ourselves to the bewildering mass of information which is now so acces sible to us. But it is only one point of view, and if it has caused me to emphasise some things which are not discussed in most books, it has also caused me to omit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imperial Germany: A Lecture This events associated with the foundation and development of the new German Empire constitute the most important episode in the history of Europe since the fall of Napoleon. They stand as the culmination of a series of events beginning with the Prussian reaction against French domination in 1813. To be understood, they must be viewed in the light of the failure of the arrangement effected by the Congress of Vienna, and of the more or less aimless struggles embraced under the general designation of the Revolution of 1848. Download or read book German Life in Town and Country Classic Reprint written by William Harbutt Dawson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Life in Town and Country Iunity, Germany was little more than a geographi cal expression, and more than half a century had yet to pass before the movement which he and countless other patriots, both of the pen and the sword, laboured and lived to advance, took practical form. Only in 1871 did Germany as we now know it become united, but the unity then cemented proved very different from that which most of the national leaders of Arndt's day anticipated, since the largest of the German States was excluded from the ring-fence which Prince Bismarck drew around the twenty-five sovereignties which still retained their independ ence, and to which, with due regard to the tra dition of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, which came to an end in 1800, he gave the name of German Empire. Book My Four Years in Germany Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Four Years in Germany Classic Reprint written by James W. Gerard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Four Years in Germany I am writing what should have been the last chapter as the foreword of this series of articles, because I want to bring home to our people the gravity of the situation; because I want to tell them that the military and naval power of the German Empire is unbroken; that of the twelve million men whom the Kaiser has called to the colours but one million, five hundred thousand have been killed, five hundred thousand permanently disabled, not more than five hundred thousand are prisoners of war, and about five hundred thousand constitute the number of wounded or those on the sick list of each day, leaving at all times about nine million effectives under arms. I state these figures because Americans do not grasp either the magnitude or the importance of this war. Perhaps the statement that over five million prisoners of war are held in the various countries will bring home to Americans the enormous mass of men engaged. There have been no great losses in the German navy, and any losses of ships have been compensated for by the building of new ones. Book The German Empire s Hour of Destiny Classic Reprint

Download or read book The German Empire s Hour of Destiny Classic Reprint written by Colonel H. Frobenius and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Empire's Hour of Destiny The extraordinary interest for Americans of this remarkably prophetic book is heightened by the fact that "The Hour" epitomized in the familiar toast of the zealous German militarist, has come; and by the further knowledge that Col. Frobenius' prophecies are based in part upon the observations of Homer Lea, an American student of world politics. Published only a few days before the declaration of war and receiving the hearty commendation of the German Crown Prince, this book definitely forecasts the greatest war in history, as early as the spring of 1915 or 1916. Col. Frobenius with blunt soldierly directness declares that the preservation of the British World Empire requires the enfeeblement, or destruction of Germany, and that France has long been prepared for a war of revenge.
