Book Imperatives for Improvement of Food Safety in Fruit and Vegetable Value Chains in Viet Nam

Download or read book Imperatives for Improvement of Food Safety in Fruit and Vegetable Value Chains in Viet Nam written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication explores how Viet Nam can improve the safety of its fruit and vegetables, including through production and postharvest handling, value chain development, and a stronger food safety management system. It notes that building confidence in safe fruit and vegetables would encourage consumers to eat more of them, boosting people’s health and producers’ livelihoods. The publication draws on the results of safety tests, a stakeholder survey, and a literature review. Its recommendations include expanding producers’ cooperatives and designated safe vegetable production areas, using incentives and controls to drive down chemical pesticide misuse, and publishing the results of regular testing.

Book Micro small and medium enterprises MSMEs in fruit and vegetable value chains in Vietnam

Download or read book Micro small and medium enterprises MSMEs in fruit and vegetable value chains in Vietnam written by Nguyen, Trang and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stimulating nutritious diets features high on policy agendas, but designing effective interventions requires insights which are grounded in evidence and reflections on the food environment context and the needs of specific actors involved. This study focuses on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) which play a key role in Fruit and Vegetable (FV) supply, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas. Understanding the barriers that specific types of MSMEs face in expanding their FV businesses is pivotal for improving the delivery of FV. The study surveyed 240 MSMEs involved in the FV value chains in the Moc Chau (rural) and Dong Anh (peri-urban) districts, including collectors, wholesalers, processors, and retailers. The survey, and complementing focus group discussions, documented the importance of FV trade in MSME business models, the willingness of MSMEs to expand their businesses, and their perceived barriers in doing so. Next, the study examined interfirm linkages and whether these are conducive to expanding FV trade. Finally, a review of national policies yielded an understanding of whether the barriers identified are actively being targeted by the government.

Book Promoting sustainable and inclusive value chains for fruits and vegetables Policy review

Download or read book Promoting sustainable and inclusive value chains for fruits and vegetables Policy review written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The persistence of undernutrition and the increasing levels of overweight and obesity worldwide (with their associated societal costs) are calling for a transformation of food systems towards healthier diets. Fruits and vegetables are key components of a healthy diet; however, their consumption is considerably below the minimal levels recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). This underconsumption is particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries and among low-income socio-economic groups in all countries. This paper uses the value chain approach to analyze the factors that affect the availability and affordability of fruits and vegetables. It examines major challenges across the value chain and identifies opportunities for improvement as seen through a nutrition-sensitive lens. Factors that negatively affect the availability and affordability of fruits and vegetables discussed in this paper include low production and productivity, the loss of agrobiodiversity, inadequate technology, logistics and infrastructure, weak organizational, business, and technical skills, and inefficient market linkages across the supply chain. The paper proposes a number of policy recommendations based on insights from documented cases of good practices and on lessons learned in domestic and export-oriented value chains. The paper makes a case for reviving native, underutilized, and neglected fruit and vegetable varieties to improve nutrition and increase agrobiodiversity. In addition, short value chains delivering to local markets are recommended as a resilience strategy for smallscale producers and low-income consumers in the face of climatic and economic shocks.

Book Reducing Disease Risks and Improving Food Safety in Smallholder Pig Value Chains in Vietnam

Download or read book Reducing Disease Risks and Improving Food Safety in Smallholder Pig Value Chains in Vietnam written by Fred Unger and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The PigRISK project aimed to improve the livelihoods of smallholder pig farmers in Vietnam and improve food safety in the pork value chain. Pork is the most popular meat in Vietnam and essential for consumer nutrition and farmer livelihoods. But is it safe? Pork in Vietnam is produced mainly by smallholders and sold fresh in traditional markets. In a country where childhood stunting is still common, animal source foods are important in healthy diets. Because demand for pork is growing, pork value chains have great potential as a pathway out of poverty. The project built on a strong national and international partnerships to address big questions: is pork in Vietnam safe? Are the risks big and important? How best can these risks be managed? This project synthesised important results on the effect of pork borne disease, perception and reality of risks, and promising pork safety solutions."--Website.

Book Moving Towards Agroecosystem Sustainability

Download or read book Moving Towards Agroecosystem Sustainability written by Luke Vincent Simmons and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity is facing a series of challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, decreasing availability of cheap fossil fuel energy and social inequality that, when taken together, constitute a sustainability crisis. Agricultural systems are vitally important for the survival of humanity and must be moved towards greater sustainability. In Vietnam, the challenges facing the agriculture sector are immediate and pressing. These challenges include the need to improve the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers, improve food safety and protect already heavily burdened ecosystems. In response to these challenges, a number of alternative agriculture approaches, including safe vegetable production and organic farming have emerged. While the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides are not permitted in certified organic agriculture, the requirements for safe vegetable production are not nearly as stringent. Chemical fertilizers and some low toxicity pesticides are allowed in safe vegetable production as long as pesticide residues are below proscribed limits. This research assesses the contributions that safe vegetable production and organic agriculture are making to the development of more sustainable agroecosystems in Vietnam. Organic production is still in early stages of development, with the majority of the projects directed towards production for export. Safe vegetables in contrast are produced primarily for the domestic market and demand is driven by consumer concerns over excessive pesticide use in conventional vegetable production. A sustainability assessment that explores the effect that safe vegetable production is having on eight major criteria for sustainability is applied in Cu Chi District, Ho Chi Minh City. Research methods included semi-structured interviews and group discussions with safe vegetable farmers together with interviews of other key actors from the agricultural sector in Vietnam. Along with the goal of protecting human health, farmers are interested in safe vegetable production because of improved economic returns made possible by reduced inputs and greater market access. While safe vegetable production is contributing to greater agroecosystem sustainability, further improvements are needed in some areas, specifically in the use of agrochemicals. There are encouraging signs in relation to pesticides, with some farmers reducing their pesticide use and moving towards less-toxic pesticides. Further movement towards sustainability could be fostered by a shift to the use of pesticides only as a last resort, a further shift from chemical to organic fertilizers, and improved capacity of farmers to experiment with and adapt safe vegetable production techniques.

Book Improving Food Safety Risk Assessment in Vietnam

Download or read book Improving Food Safety Risk Assessment in Vietnam written by World Bank Group and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam's agricultural sector plays an important role in the global agri-food value chain. As the sector having the highest trade surplus in one of the most open economies in the world, Vietnam's agricultural sector was affected by Coronavirus (COVID-19) in two main ways. Firstly, raw materials and immediate input supplies for the sector were disrupted due to the early outbreak in Asian countries, especially China, which supply most agricultural inputs such as fertilizers and plant protection products. Secondly and compounding this trend, demand has dropped significantly due to mobility restrictions and reduced economic activity within the country and its most important markets, such as the US and Europe. The objective of this study was to enhance Vietnam's trade and competitiveness, focusing on strengthening private sector participation in global value-chains and food safety awareness and compliance. This report is structured as follows. The first chapter presents the context, objectives and approach for the study. The second chapter highlights the key issues, challenges and gaps in Vietnam's food safety risk assessment. The third chapter presents some of the key lessons and experiences in food safety risk management from some countries within the region and more advanced economies, as a basis to inform Vietnam's national food safety risk assessment framework. Chapter four makes recommendations on how to strengthen Vietnam's National food safety risk assessment committee.

The causes of malnutrition are complex, yet all forms of malnutrition share one common feature: nutritionally inappropriate diets. The State of Food and Agriculture 2013 makes the case that healthy diets and good nutrition begin with food and agriculture.

Book Transforming Food Systems for a Rising India

Download or read book Transforming Food Systems for a Rising India written by Prabhu Pingali and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book examines the interactions between India’s economic development, agricultural production, and nutrition through the lens of a “Food Systems Approach (FSA).” The Indian growth story is a paradoxical one. Despite economic progress over the past two decades, regional inequality, food insecurity and malnutrition problems persist. Simultaneously, recent trends in obesity along with micro-nutrient deficiency portend to a future public health crisis. This book explores various challenges and opportunities to achieve a nutrition-secure future through diversified production systems, improved health and hygiene environment and greater individual capability to access a balanced diet contributing to an increase in overall productivity. The authors bring together the latest data and scientific evidence from the country to map out the current state of food systems and nutrition outcomes. They place India within the context of other developing country experiences and highlight India’s status as an outlier in terms of the persistence of high levels of stunting while following global trends in obesity. This book discusses the policy and institutional interventions needed for promoting a nutrition-sensitive food system and the multi-sectoral strategies needed for simultaneously addressing the triple burden of malnutrition in India.

Book The impact of disasters and crises on agriculture and food security 2021

Download or read book The impact of disasters and crises on agriculture and food security 2021 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On top of a decade of exacerbated disaster loss, exceptional global heat, retreating ice and rising sea levels, humanity and our food security face a range of new and unprecedented hazards, such as megafires, extreme weather events, desert locust swarms of magnitudes previously unseen, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Agriculture underpins the livelihoods of over 2.5 billion people – most of them in low-income developing countries – and remains a key driver of development. At no other point in history has agriculture been faced with such an array of familiar and unfamiliar risks, interacting in a hyperconnected world and a precipitously changing landscape. And agriculture continues to absorb a disproportionate share of the damage and loss wrought by disasters. Their growing frequency and intensity, along with the systemic nature of risk, are upending people’s lives, devastating livelihoods, and jeopardizing our entire food system. This report makes a powerful case for investing in resilience and disaster risk reduction – especially data gathering and analysis for evidence informed action – to ensure agriculture’s crucial role in achieving the future we want.

Book Food Safety Management

Download or read book Food Safety Management written by Nina Veflen Olsen and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were series of food scandals and scares all over the world which staggered consumers’ confidence in food safety and in the food chain. Consumers worried about new technologies, any existing and perceived risks being out of their control. Food production is more complex than ever and several ethical issues are raised in relation to agricultural practices and the food supply chain. Making good ethical decisions requires a trained sensitivity to ethical issues and a practiced method for exploring the ethical aspects of a decision. The more novel and difficult the ethical choice we face, the more we need to rely on discussion and dialogue with others about the dilemma. A dialogue about the ethical implications of food production, processing, policy, supply and consumption may help involved partners making better decisions.
