Book Zebra Mussels Biology Impacts and Control

Download or read book Zebra Mussels Biology Impacts and Control written by Thomas F. Nalepa and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-11-24 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction and rapid spread of the zebra mussel in North American waters has caused great concern among industrial and recreational users of these waters. This bivalve mollusk is a biofouler that attaches to any firm substrate (e.g. rocks, piers, water intake pipes, boat hulls) and has already created significant problems for raw water users such as water treatment plants and power plants. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts and Control provides essential information regarding the biology of the zebra mussel in North America and Europe, presents case studies of environmental and industrial impacts, and outlines control strategies. Summary articles detail its life history, origins, and morphology. The book also examines techniques used to culture and maintain this organism in the laboratory. Thirty-two color plates illustrate some of the dramatic problems created by the explosive population growth of this species. Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts, and Control is an important resource for ecologists, conservationists, environmental consultants, water quality engineers, regulatory officials, power utilities, and libraries.

A. Rasul and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The literature on zebra mussels and their effect on the Great Lakes ecosystem dates, of necessity, back only to the mid-1980's. This was when these exotic mollusks were introduced accidentally into Lake St. Clair, via ballast water dumped from a European vessel. The bibliography presented here combines the Great lakes literature with older European references dealing with the interaction of zebra mussels and their sediment substrate. It is intended as an aid for researchers into the associated processes and relationships"--Abstract, page 1.

Book Ecological Effects of Water level Fluctuations in Lakes

Download or read book Ecological Effects of Water level Fluctuations in Lakes written by Karl M. Wantzen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most aquatic ecosystems have variable water levels. These water-level fluctuations (WLF) have multiple effects on the organisms above and below the waterline. Natural WLF patterns in lakes guarantee both productivity and biodiversity, while untimely floods and droughts may have negative effects. Human impacts on WLF have led to a stabilization of the water levels of many lakes by hydraulic regulation, untimely drawdown due to water use, or floods due to water release from hydropower plants in the catchments. This book provides a first review in this field. It presents selected papers on the ecological effects of WLF in lakes, resulting from a workshop at the University of Konstanz in winter 2005. Issues addressed here include the extent of WLF, and analyses of their effects on different groups of biota from microorganisms to vertebrates. Applied issues include recommendations for the hydrological management of regulated lakes to reduce negative impacts, and a conceptual framework is delivered by an extension of the floodpulse concept for lakes. Current impacts on water use, including increasing demands on drinking and irrigation water, hydropower etc., and climate change effects on WLF make this book an essential resource for aquatic ecologists, engineers, and decision-makers dealing with the management of lake ecosystems and their catchments.

Book Quagga and Zebra Mussels

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas F. Nalepa
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2013-10-25

Download or read book Quagga and Zebra Mussels written by Thomas F. Nalepa and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-10-25 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction and rapid spread of two Eurasian mussel species, Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel) and Dreissena rostriformis bugensis (quagga mussel), in waters of North America has caused great concern among industrial and recreational water users. These invasive species can create substantial problems for raw water users such as water treatment facilities and power plants, and they can have other negative impacts by altering aquatic environments. In the 20 years since the first edition of this book was published, zebra mussels have continued to spread, and quagga mussels have become the greater threat in the Great Lakes, in deep regions of large lakes, and in the southwestern Unites States. Quagga mussels have also expanded greatly in eastern and western Europe since the first book edition was published. Quagga and Zebra Mussels: Biology, Impacts, and Control, Second Edition provides a broad view of the zebra/quagga mussel issue, offering a historic perspective and up-to-date information on mussel research. Comprising 48 chapters, this second edition includes reviews of mussel morphology, physiology, and behavior. It details mussel distribution and spread in Europe and across North America, and examines policy and regulatory responses, management strategies, and mitigation efforts. In addition, this book provides extensive coverage of the impact of invasive mussel species on freshwater ecosystems, including effects on water clarity, phytoplankton, water quality, food web changes, and consequences to other aquatic fauna. It also reviews and offers new insights on how zebra and quagga mussels respond and adapt to varying environmental conditions. This new edition includes seven video clips that complement chapter text and, through visual documentation, provide a greater understanding of mussel behavior and distribution.

Book Ecological Integration of Zebra Mussels in the Great Lakes

Download or read book Ecological Integration of Zebra Mussels in the Great Lakes written by Hugh Joseph MacIsaac and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zebra mussels, one of the most recent non-indigenous species to invade the Great Lakes, achieves extraordinary population densities in the lower lakes. They draw in water and filter a broad range of suspended particles, and have the potential to alter contaminant cycling in invaded lakes. They are also a conduit for contaminants and energy to higher trophic levels by serving as prey for fish and waterfowl. This study assesses the suitability of the zebra mussel as an organic contaminant biomonitor in the lower Great Lakes and also addresses its importance to waterfowl diets and body burdens or organocontaminants. It presents results of elimination rate determinations for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and contaminant levels in mussels from vaiours sites in Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair; results of experiments to determine the contribution of food to zebra mussel PCB accumulation; and statistical analyses of contaminant data for six species of ducks, examining differences in contaminant levels between those that consumed zebra mussels and those that did not.
