Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To enhance the understanding of fish and shellfish buying patterns in the United States, this study investigated the nature and magnitude of the influence of price, household income, and socioeconomic and demographic variates on aggregate seafood expenditure. The source of data was the 1972-1974 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Diary Survey. The empirical analysis of aggregate fish and shellfish expenditure was based on information from 9,066 households. The list of socioeconomic and demographic characteristics hypothesized to affect fish and shellfish expenditure included: (1) geographic region, (2) population density (urbanization), (3) household size, (4) race of household head, (5) marital status of household head, (6) education of household head, (7) occupation of household head, (8) tenure class (homeownership) of household head, (9) seasonality, and (10) employment status of the female household head. Geographic region, population density, race, marital status, the price of fish and shellfish, household size, and household income were statistically significant factors of household expenditure on fish and shellfish. However, education, occupation, and tenure class of the household head as well as seasonality and employment status of the female household head were not statistically significant factors of household expenditure on fish and shellfish. Given information on price, household income, household size, and socioeconomic and demographic variates, profiles were constructed to examine household expenditure behavior.

Book An Econometric Analysis of Socioeconomic and Demographic Determinants of Fish and Shellfish Consumption in the United States

Download or read book An Econometric Analysis of Socioeconomic and Demographic Determinants of Fish and Shellfish Consumption in the United States written by Jonathan S. Perry and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weekly household expenditures on fish and shellfish products in the United States were analyzed through estimation of an Engel curve relationship. Expenditures on five product groups (canned fish, shellfish, whole fish, filleted and steaked fish, and total expenditures) were expressed as a function of thirteen variables reflecting household socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. Variables included were income, race, expenditures on food away-from-home, education, occupation, urbanization and an adult equivalent scale. Data employed were collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics during the 1972-1974 Consumer Expenditure Diary Survey. The 23,186 households studied were segregated into four regions and three income groups. A separate equation for each expenditure category was estimated for each region and each income group. Expenditures were considered limited dependent variables and Tobit analysis used. The solution algorithm chosen was Phelps' version of LIMDEP. Income, race, and the adult equivalent scale were consistently significant in explaining expenditures on all product groups. Income had a significant positive impact on all expenditure categories except whole fish. The Northeast tended to have the largest income coefficients, expenditure income elasticities of demand, and average weekly expenditures. Smallest elasticities occurred in the South while the North Central states had the smallest average expenditures. Among product groups the largest elasticities were associated with shellfish and the smallest with filleted and steaked products. Race was an important determinant of expenditures with Black households often predicted to spend $2.00 per week more on fresh fish products than Whites. Whites tended to have larger expenditures on canned fish. Of the adult equivalent scale variables adult males and females, and elderly males had a larger impact on expenditures than infants or elderly females. Occupation had no consistent impact on purchases while urbanization had an impact only in the Northeast and West. Education was significant for canned fish expenditures in all regions.

Book Demographic Differences in Household Expenditure for Low Income Families Evidence from the United States

Download or read book Demographic Differences in Household Expenditure for Low Income Families Evidence from the United States written by Joerose Tharakan and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being one of the world's most prosperous countries, the United States of America was home to roughly 7.7 million households living in poverty in 2006. Of this figure, 53% percent of households were headed by a single mother. What is more disturbing is that a significant majority of these households were those of full time workers, unable to meet the basic needs of their families at federally mandated minimum wage rates. Researchers and activists from a multitude of disciplines have repeatedly called for an overhaul of the current method of estimating poverty in the United States` and further proposed a variety of tools for its revaluation. This paper makes use of some of those tools to motivate an analysis of demographic differences in household expenditure on basic necessities as a way of bringing the plight of these families into the spotlight being cast on issues of poverty. Using recently released data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, this paper looks at the how certain demographic characteristics affect household expenditure and which categories of expenditure put a family at risk of falling (albeit unnoticed) below a more realistic measure of poverty than the one currently in use.

This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anthrax incidents following the 9/11 terrorist attacks put the spotlight on the nation's public health agencies, placing it under an unprecedented scrutiny that added new dimensions to the complex issues considered in this report. The Future of the Public's Health in the 21st Century reaffirms the vision of Healthy People 2010, and outlines a systems approach to assuring the nation's health in practice, research, and policy. This approach focuses on joining the unique resources and perspectives of diverse sectors and entities and challenges these groups to work in a concerted, strategic way to promote and protect the public's health. Focusing on diverse partnerships as the framework for public health, the book discusses: The need for a shift from an individual to a population-based approach in practice, research, policy, and community engagement. The status of the governmental public health infrastructure and what needs to be improved, including its interface with the health care delivery system. The roles nongovernment actors, such as academia, business, local communities and the media can play in creating a healthy nation. Providing an accessible analysis, this book will be important to public health policy-makers and practitioners, business and community leaders, health advocates, educators and journalists.

Book Food data collection in Household Consumption and Expenditure Surveys Guidelines for low and middle income countries

Download or read book Food data collection in Household Consumption and Expenditure Surveys Guidelines for low and middle income countries written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurement of food consumption and expenditure is a fundamental component of any analysis of poverty and food security, and hence the importance and timeliness of devoting attention to the topic cannot be overemphasized as the international development community confronts the challenges of monitoring progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In 2014, the International Household Survey Network published a desk review of the reliability and relevance of survey questions as included in 100 household surveys from low- and middle-income countries. The report was presented in March 2014 at the forty-fifth session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC), in a seminar organized by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Food Security, Agricultural and Rural Statistics (IAEG-AG). The assessment painted a bleak picture in terms of heterogeneity in survey design and overall relevance and reliability of the data being collected. On the positive side, it pointed to many areas in which even marginal changes to survey and questionnaire design could lead to a significant increase in reliability and consequently, great improvements in measurement accuracy. The report, which sparked a lot of interest from development partners and UNSC member countries, prompted IAEG-AG to pursue this area of work with the ultimate objective of developing, validating, and promoting scalable standards for the measurement of food consumption in household surveys. The work started with an expert workshop that took place in Rome in November 2014. Successive versions of the guidelines were drafted and discussed at various IAEG-AG meetings, and in another expert workshop organized in November 2016 in Rome. The guidelines were put together by a joint FAO-World Bank team, with inputs and comments received from representatives of national statistical offices, international organizations, survey practitioners, academics, and experts in different disciplines (statistics, economics, nutrition, food security, and analysis). A list of the main contributors is included in the acknowledgment section. In December 2017 a draft of the guidelines was circulated to 148 National Statistical Offices from low- to high-income countries for comments. The document was revised following that consultation and submitted to UNSC, which endorsed it at its forty-ninth session in March 2018 (under item 3(j) of the agenda, agricultural and rural statistics. The version presented here reflects what was endorsed by the Commission, edited for language. The process received support from the Global Strategy for Agricultural and Rural Statistics. The document is intended to be a reference document for National Statistical Offices, survey practitioners, and national and international agencies designing household surveys that involve the collection of food consumption and expenditure data.
