Book Impacts of Roads on Movements and Habitat Use by Bighorn Sheep on the Northern Winter Range

Download or read book Impacts of Roads on Movements and Habitat Use by Bighorn Sheep on the Northern Winter Range written by Lynn R. Irby and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) were reported to occur in all mountain ranges in and around Yellowstone National Park (YNP) in the late 1800's (Mills 1937). European expansion into the upper Yellowstone River Valley during the 19th century caused bighorn sheep numbers to drastically decline from competition with livestock, introduction of livestock disease, hunting, and loss of habitat. The establishment of YNP, other management areas, and hunting regulations protected remaining bighorn populations. Although some populations were eliminated, others increased and reestablished into historic ranges (Buechner 1960, Keating 1982).

Book Seasonal Habitat Selection and Impacts of Backcountry Recreation on a Formerly Migratory Bighorn Sheep Population in Northwest Wyoming USA

Download or read book Seasonal Habitat Selection and Impacts of Backcountry Recreation on a Formerly Migratory Bighorn Sheep Population in Northwest Wyoming USA written by Alyson B. Courtemanch and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The persistence of many migratory ungulate populations worldwide is threatened due to anthropogenic impacts to seasonal ranges and migration routes. Very little is known about the ability of migratory ungulates to adapt to migration disruption or loss. We proposed the Alternative Foraging Strategies Hypothesis (AFSH) as a framework for identifying various seasonal behavioral strategies that ungulates may use to cope with migration loss. We tested the AFSH using the formerly migratory Teton bighorn sheep population in northwest Wyoming, which ceased migrating over 60 years ago, but has persisted as resident. We used global positioning system (GPS) data to evaluate winter and summer habitat selection and seasonal elevational movements for 28 adult female bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) from 2008-2010. Resource selection functions revealed that Teton bighorn sheep have altered their winter foraging strategies to survive as residents by seeking out rugged, high elevation, windswept ridgelines. Seasonal movement analyses indicated that bighorn sheep undergo a newly documented "abbreviated migration" strategy that is closely synchronized with vegetation green-up patterns within their one range. We also investigated the long-term behavioral responses of bighorn sheep to backcountry skiing and snowboarding, which pose an additional challenge to surviving in their new high elevation habitats. We found that bighorn sheep avoided areas of backcountry recreation, even if those areas were otherwise relatively high quality habitat. Avoidance behavior resulted in up to a 30% reduction in available high quality habitat for some individuals. Bighorn sheep avoided areas with both low and high recreation use. Individual bighorn sheep exposed to high levels of recreation exhibited increased daily movement rates and home range sizes compared to sheep exposed to low or no recreation. These results reveal that bighorn sheep appear to be sensitive to forms of recreation which people largely perceive as having minimal impact to wildlife, such as backcountry skiing. The identification of alternative foraging strategies, the habitats that support them and the additional challenges to ungulates after migration loss, such as human recreation, can help reveal the underlying benefits of migration and help conserve ungulate populations after migration loss.

Book Wildlife Management Implications of Petroleum Exploration and Development in Wildland Environments

Download or read book Wildlife Management Implications of Petroleum Exploration and Development in Wildland Environments written by Marianne Bromley and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Nonconsumptive Outdoor Recreation

Download or read book Nonconsumptive Outdoor Recreation written by Stephen A. Boyle and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonconsumptive outdoor recreation has increased greatly in recent years, and there is growing concern about the effects of such activities on wildlife and wildlife habitats. Unfortunately, information concerning these effects is scare and widely scattered. To stimulate research and assist resource planners and managers in utilizing available information, an annotated bibliography of human-wildlife interactions is provided. The report reviews interactions between wildlife and humans participating in nonconsumptive outdoor recreation activities. Also provided are indexes to authors, species, keywords and geographic regions; an annotated list of keywords; and a list of bibliographies on related topics.

Book The Effect of Seasonal Cattle Grazing on California Bighorn Sheep Habitat Use

Download or read book The Effect of Seasonal Cattle Grazing on California Bighorn Sheep Habitat Use written by Melanie J. Steinkamp and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of seasonal cattle grazing on a newly reintroduced population of California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Idaho, was studied. The hypothesis that bighorn sheep avoid cattle was tested. The issue of avoidance between bighorn sheep and livestock is arguable. Some studies have found that bighorn sheep avoid cattle while others have found no response of bighorn sheep to cattle. Evidence was found to document the avoidance of cattle by bighorn sheep. The size of the bighorn's home range and core area decreased with the movement of cattle into areas of high bighorn use. As cattle were moved into bighorn core areas, sheep responded by relocating. Bighorn sheep decreased their distance to escape terrain as cattle moved closer. The level and location of human disturbance on the study area did not have any effect on bighorn sheep movements or how sheep used the habitat. The severity of response observed is in marked contrast with the response of established bighorn populations to cattle. I suggest that newly reintroduced bighorn sheep are extremely sensitive to disturbance as a result of relocation trauma. Sensitivity may diminish over time.
