The report contains agri-environmental indicators for the dairy sector, and also considers policies that OECD governments, particularly in Europe, have introduced to promote organic milk production and their impact on trade flows.

Book Impact of a Gradual Increase in Milk Quotas on the EU Dairy Sector

Download or read book Impact of a Gradual Increase in Milk Quotas on the EU Dairy Sector written by Z. Bouamra Mechemache and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union (EU) dairy sector is facing significant changes due to EU enlargement, the Luxembourg reform and ongoing World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations. This paper explores the impact of alternative dairy policies in the context of a WTO agreement and further dairy policy adjustments. In particular, it analyses the impact of gradual but significant increases in EU milk quota and discusses the implications of different changes in the allocation of milk quotas. These scenarios are compared with the status quo as decided in the Common Agricultural Policy reform of 2003. We find that, by 2014-2015, the market effects of abolishing quota are similar to those of a 2 per cent gradual quota increase starting in 2009.

Book European Dairy Policy in the Years to Come

Download or read book European Dairy Policy in the Years to Come written by Siemen van Berkum and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines EU dairy sector and market developments, and the likely impact of the milk quota removal. The latter is illustrated by model simulations focused on the Dutch dairy farm sector. Declining milk prices raise the question whether quota are still relevant to the sector. Ongoing trade liberalisation will further push down EU milk prices, with significant income effects. The Dutch case study shows that early quota abolition will be beneficial for larger farms eager to expand and enhances structural change. Implications for the European dairy processing sector are discussed too. The paper concludes by presenting sets of policy instruments that may facilitate the sector gradual adjustment to a situation without milk quota.
