Book excerpt: This study determined the impact of organizational culture on institutional effectiveness in a local higher education institution. It utilized a cross sectional, explanatory design with the questionnaire as the main data gathering tool. Seventy-five (75) personnel participated in the study. Cameron-Ettington's Typology of Organizational Culture and Cameron's nine dimensions of institutional effectiveness were used to determine the organizational culture and institutional effectiveness. Pearson r and partial correlation were used to test the degree of relationship between organizational culture and institutional effectiveness of local HEI when moderated by profile variables. Findings show that adhocracy and bureaucracy culture are the dominant cultures manifested. Respondents rated student educational satisfaction, faculty and administrator employment satisfaction, professional development and quality of faculty, organizational health and rewards, recognitions and communication as Somewhat Agree. The study confirmed that organizational culture manifested a strong positive relationship with institutional effectiveness. Market culture manifested high or strong relationship with institutional effectiveness while the adhocracy, bureaucracy and clan cultures manifested only a moderate relationship. All profile variables included in the study strongly influence organizational culture's impact on institutional effectiveness.

It concerns decisions, actions, and communication on an instrumental and symbolic level. Book excerpt: The present study exploratively investigated the role of organizational culture in performance management practices in Kenyan higher education institutions. Specifically, the influence of organizational culture on the purpose and extent to which performance information is used was explored. Qualitative interviews were conducted followed by quantitative surveys, which were filled out by teaching and non-teaching staff in various universities in Kenya. The findings provide evidence of linkages between performance information use, diversity of measure and organizational culture. It has been established that, depending on whether flexibility or control values are dominant in the culture of an institution; performance information is used in varying ways. Institutions where flexibility values were dominant in their organizational cultures used performance information for attention focus, monitoring and decision making to a higher extent than universities where control values were dominant. Institutions where Flexibility values were dominant also showed a more diverse set of performance measures than in those where control values were dominant.

Central to understanding organizational culture is to minimize the occurrence and consequences of cultural conflict and help foster the development of shared goals. Modifying organizational culture is important. Without culture change, there is little hope of enduring improvement in organizational performance. When leaders understand the important connection between culture and strategy, they are better able to act in the abstruse environment in which higher education currently finds itself. Academic leaders sometimes struggle because they move too fast, too unilaterally, or without full appreciation of the power of cultural norms and traditions to enable others to buy into their plans. The lack of understanding regarding the role of organizational culture in improving management and institutional performance inhibits a leader's ability to address the challenges that face higher education. How effective an organization functions is related to its culture. There is strong consistency in both two-year and four-year institutions in the manner by which organizational effectiveness is related to culture. Organizational culture influences effectiveness by contributing to the solution of both external adaptation and internal integration issues. Because of the changing educational environment, institutional culture must evolve for an organization to remain competitive. Current challenges with organizational culture are not determined by whether to change but how to change to increase organizational effectiveness. Many efforts to improve organizational effectiveness fail because the fundamental culture of the organization remains the same. This qualitative study used historiography methodology to investigate how and why culture changes have occurred at Jefferson College, a two-year community college located in Hillsboro, Missouri. The culture of Jefferson College will be explored in relation to organizational effectiveness as well as significant events throughout its history. It includes historical events and leadership changes of Jefferson College and the impact each has had on organizational culture and effectiveness.

It examines their social impact on the regions in which they are situated, both from the perspectives of the universities themselves and from the perspectives of a range of different local and regional interest groups. It draws on a national study in the UK which has examined the role played by universities in four contrasting regional contexts. This UK study will be set within the larger theoretical and international literature on the role played by universities in processes of social change and transformation. A Purposeful Approach: The authors defined the act of becoming an equity-centered institution in terms of a transformational change approach using Kotter’s Eight-Stage Process. Kotter’s Model and AACC’s Leadership Competencies for Community College Leaders are introduced in Chapter 1 and integrated throughout the book. This integrated framework allows practitioners to place the intersectionality of equity, transformational change, and requisite leadership competencies into the larger context of higher education. While using Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model, the authors emphasize that operations and situations inside higher educational institutions are not linear as implied in Kotter’s model. They show how the stages of change may occur at different times and different situations at different institutions, and demonstrate what leadership competencies are recommended for each stage in the change process.
