Farm sector's contribution to National GDP is declining over the years. However, 70 per cent of the country's population still depends on agriculture. Under such conditions, small, marginal and neo marginal farmers find it difficult to cope up with the resultant volatility in the economy. Hence, they tend to be marginalized and results in migration of rural population to urban areas. The vast agro-climatic diversity, production potential, cheap farm labour availability and domestic and overseas market potential of India provides greater scope for Private sector's participation. Interestingly, in the recent past, National Agricultural policies of India favor Private sector participation through contract farming arrangements as Private agri-business firms and Multi National Companies are entering into contract farming with farmers. So, the present study was conducted on impact of contract farming on the economic status of farmers along with their suggestions to improve the status of contract farming in Karnataka.

The farmers and buyers make advance agreements on volume, quality, time of delivery, use of inputs, and price or pricing formula. It contributes to improving production efficiency and income of farmers in general and of small-scale farmers in particular. Although we refer to progress in developed countries (primarily the United States, Europe and Asian countries) to gain a deeper understanding of the impacts of Corporate/Contract farming. We find that although contributes to the improvement of farmers' income by introducing new crops and production methods, there is room for strengthening its effects on poverty reduction through policy. Farmers are king in dealing with their counterparts and secured with all risks which is born by the big entities of corporate who makes maximum use of their expert expertise and digitally marketed products and away the middleman to grab maximum profit from the Farmers ( who are the Annadata). Contract farming stimulates employment. The available evidence supports the notion that contract farming increases welfare. Contract farming is commonly seen as a suitable means of linking poor farmers to markets. In this book this has been elaborated as a great market place for whole society which also involves themselves with the farmers friend. There are also huge chances to increase different employment generation activity in these areas as tourism, eco- friendly climate for short term health improvement programs and availability of all services of experts, doctors, yoga instructors and entertainment event arrangement not such like in metros but on the basis of rural involvement. Learning and participation of small children as school camps in these villages and know the nature in original form. These all can be done if any start-up companies or contract farming companies start their activities in these fields and they have high-income yield business In these areas. Locals can be involved with their training in the different fields their employment and concentration of population in metros will be stopped.

It says that Contract Farming (CF) acts as a conduit that enables the coming together of myriad production relations (mercantile, finance, productive) to sell agri-commodities to the capitalist peasant. It is an accumulation strategy that brings together various factions of domestic and foreign capital together. It shows that CF as an accumulation strategy is enabled by an active interventionist state and this neoliberal Indian state mediates the relation between the agri-capital and Indian peasantry. The book further analyzes contract farming as a part of the totality of the capitalist mode of production in context of developing countries with a large agrarian base--- asking three fundamental questions – what is CF, how and why is it done and what are the implications of it.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the impact of contract farming (CF) in baby corn production on yield, irrigation costs, fertilizer costs and usage of chemical fertilizer. We find that adoption of CF by baby corn smallholders, after controlling for characteristics of both control and treatment groups, leads to higher yields and lower spending on fertilizers and irrigation. Additionally, CF in baby corn farming leads to a reduction in the use of chemical fertilizers (Urea and DAP). Thus, CF intervention benefits the livelihood of smallholders, reduces environmental degradation and reduces stress on groundwater without compromising yield.

One of the ways that inequality is perpetuated is through differential market access across regions. This research deals with one of the primary determinants of regional inequality manifested in terms of market access. Nepal is one country where hierarchical geography leads to regional inequality. Differential market access can cause as well as accentuate inequality among farmers. Coordination arrangements such as contract farming can improve outcomes for the farmers and integrators on the one hand, but on the other hand it can accentuate inequality if only some regions benefit from it. With this background, in this paper we study the case of contract farming for exports with farmers in remote hilly areas of Nepal. The prospect for contract farming in such areas with accessibility issues owing to underdeveloped markets and lack of amenities is ambiguous. On the one hand, contractors in these areas find it difficult to build links, particularly when final consumers have quality and safety requirements. On the other hand, remoteness can make the contracts more sustainable if the agroecology offers product-specific quality advantages and, more important, if there is a lack of side-selling opportunities. At the same time, concerns remain about buyers’ monopsonistic powers when remotely located small farmers do not have outside options. This study hence quantifies the benefits of contract farming on remotely located farmers’ income and compliance with food safety measures. Results show that contract farming is significantly more profitable (offering a 58 percent greater net income) than independent production, the main pathway being higher price realization, along with training on practices and provision of quality seeds.
