Book The COVID 19 Impact on Corporate Leverage and Financial Fragility

Download or read book The COVID 19 Impact on Corporate Leverage and Financial Fragility written by Sharjil M. Haque and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the impact of the COVID-19 recession on capital structure of publicly listed U.S. firms. Our estimates suggest leverage (Net Debt/Asset) decreased by 5.3 percentage points from the pre-shock mean of 19.6 percent, while debt maturity increased moderately. This de-leveraging effect is stronger for firms exposed to significant rollover risk, while firms whose businesses were most vulnerable to social distancing did not reduce leverage. We rationalize our evidence through a structural model of firm value that shows lower expected growth rate and higher volatility of cash flows following COVID-19 reduced optimal levels of corporate leverage. Model-implied optimal leverage indicates firms which did not de-lever became over-leveraged. We find default probability deteriorates most in large, over-leveraged firms and those that were stressed pre-COVID. Additional stress tests predict value of these firms will be less than one standard deviation away from default if cash flows decline by 20 percent.

Book Effect of Capital Structure on Firm s Performance

Download or read book Effect of Capital Structure on Firm s Performance written by Ishola Akintoye and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we examined the effect of capital structure on organisational performance. We address the following questions: does higher leverage lead to better performance? Is the effect of performance on leverage similar across the distribution of different capital structure? Using a sample of 10 quoted Nigerian firms, with consideration of their financial statements for three years, we discover that an evenly distributed capital structure has positive effect on performance, while the effect of performance on leverage varies across the distribution of different capital structure as seen from the companies understudied. Most of the equity-financed firms in this study performed as much as those who employed debt in their structure in term returns on equity and assets. Although we cannot generalize this fact as few other firms with debt finance performed more efficiently as in the case of Nestle Nig. Plc, Northern Nig. Flour Mills Plc, hence the effect of leverage on efficiency varies across the distribution of different capital structure lending credence to the agency cost theory of Jensen and Meckling (1976). We therefore recommend that investors should concentrate on engagement of efficient management team, motivation and other development programmes so as to achieve goal congruence in long run.

Book Global Waves of Debt

Download or read book Global Waves of Debt written by M. Ayhan Kose and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economy has experienced four waves of rapid debt accumulation over the past 50 years. The first three debt waves ended with financial crises in many emerging market and developing economies. During the current wave, which started in 2010, the increase in debt in these economies has already been larger, faster, and broader-based than in the previous three waves. Current low interest rates mitigate some of the risks associated with high debt. However, emerging market and developing economies are also confronted by weak growth prospects, mounting vulnerabilities, and elevated global risks. A menu of policy options is available to reduce the likelihood that the current debt wave will end in crisis and, if crises do take place, will alleviate their impact.

Book Capital Structure Optimality and Performance Metrics of Selected Multinationals in Nigeria

Download or read book Capital Structure Optimality and Performance Metrics of Selected Multinationals in Nigeria written by Oghenero Godday Oboro and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the impact of capital structure optimality on performance metrics of ten (10) multinationals from 2010 to 2019. The study made use of Total debt to Equity Ratio (TDER), Total debt to Total Asset Ratio (TDAR), Short-term Debt to Asset Ratio (SDAR), and Long term debt to Total Asset ratio (LDAR) as components of capital structure and while return on equity (ROE) was used to proxy the performance of the sampled companies. Data for the study was derived from the annual reports of the sampled multinationals over the studied period. Using the panel data methodology, the study supports the fixed effect model as suggested by the Hausman test. Result emanating from the fixed effect model established that TDER exerts negative yet significant impact on the ROE of multi-nationals in Nigeria. Meanwhile, both TDAR and SDAR exert positive yet insignificant impact on the ROE of multi-nationals in Nigeria. However, LDAR ratio exerts negative yet insignificant impact on the ROE of multi-nationals in Nigeria. Hence, we conclude that the judicious mix of TDAR and TDER can achieve optimal performance of firms in multinationals in Nigeria. In light of this, the study recommends that the management of multinationals should ensure their capital structure is optimum with a view to avoid being cash strapped and debt ridden.Citation: Oboro Oghenero Godday and Samuel Ajiri Peter (2021) Capital Structure Optimality and Performance Metrics of Selected Multinationals in Nigeria, European Journal of Business and Innovation Research, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 68-80.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and social progress requires a diverse ecosystem of firms that play complementary roles. Making It Big: Why Developing Countries Need More Large Firms constitutes one of the most up-to-date assessments of how large firms are created in low- and middle-income countries and their role in development. It argues that large firms advance a range of development objectives in ways that other firms do not: large firms are more likely to innovate, export, and offer training and are more likely to adopt international standards of quality, among other contributions. Their particularities are closely associated with productivity advantages and translate into improved outcomes not only for their owners but also for their workers and for smaller enterprises in their value chains. The challenge for economic development, however, is that production does not reach economic scale in low- and middle-income countries. Why are large firms scarcer in developing countries? Drawing on a rare set of data from public and private sources, as well as proprietary data from the International Finance Corporation and case studies, this book shows that large firms are often born large—or with the attributes of largeness. In other words, what is distinct about them is often in place from day one of their operations. To fill the “missing top†? of the firm-size distribution with additional large firms, governments should support the creation of such firms by opening markets to greater competition. In low-income countries, this objective can be achieved through simple policy reorientation, such as breaking oligopolies, removing unnecessary restrictions to international trade and investment, and establishing strong rules to prevent the abuse of market power. Governments should also strive to ensure that private actors have the skills, technology, intelligence, infrastructure, and finance they need to create large ventures. Additionally, they should actively work to spread the benefits from production at scale across the largest possible number of market participants. This book seeks to bring frontier thinking and evidence on the role and origins of large firms to a wide range of readers, including academics, development practitioners and policy makers.
