Book Impact of Additives on Low Temperature Cracking Properties of Soft Binders Used in Cold Regions

Download or read book Impact of Additives on Low Temperature Cracking Properties of Soft Binders Used in Cold Regions written by Wade A. Lein and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-temperature cracking is the main distress in asphalt pavement in cold regions (such as the arctic and subarctic regions) as the climate in these areas is severe in winter. While soft asphalt binders (such as PG 52-34 and PG 52-28) are used in the cold regions, asphalt pavements can still exhibit premature cracking failures. One of the approaches to solve this issue is to modify binders using additives. However, it is not clear which additives can significantly improve the thermal cracking resistance of binders. Therefore, there is a need to find potential additives resulting in improved resistance to thermal cracking because of extreme low temperatures experienced in cold regions. In this study, five additives [nano TiO2, nano SiO2, styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), ground tire rubber (GTR), and corn oil-based softening agent (SA)] were applied at various dosages with two soft base binders (PG 52-28 and PG 64E-40). Performance properties of modified binders were evaluated using the dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), standard bending beam rheometer (BBR), and modified BBR. The testing results indicated that the combination of a 7% softening agent and 7.5% SBS exhibited the highest improvement in the resistance to thermal cracking. Meanwhile, this combination also resulted in two performance grade bumps at high temperatures. Based on the laboratory testing results, the combination of a softening agent and high SBS could be potential additives to create high-performance binders for cold regions.

Book Investigation of the Effect of Oil Modification on Asphalt Binders

Download or read book Investigation of the Effect of Oil Modification on Asphalt Binders written by Amir Golalipour and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermally induced cracking of asphalt pavement continues to be a serious issue in cold climate regions as well as in areas which experience extreme daily temperature differentials. Low temperature cracking of asphalt pavements is attributed to thermal stresses and strains developed during cooling cycles. Improving asphalt binder low temperature fracture and stiffness properties continues to be a subject of particular concern. Therefore, significant amount of research has been focused on improving asphalt binder properties through modification. In recent years, wide ranges of oil based modifications have been introduced to improve asphalt binder performance, especially at the low service temperatures. Although, significant use of these oils is seen in practice, knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of oil modification and their properties for achieving optimum characteristics is limited. Hence, this study focuses on better understanding of the effect of oil modifiers which would help better material selection and achieve optimum performance in terms of increasing the life span of pavements.

In recent years, wide ranges of oil based modifications have been introduced to improve asphalt binder performance, especially at the low service temperatures. Hence, this study focuses on better understanding of the effect of oil modifiers which would help better material selection and achieve optimum performance in terms of increasing the life span of pavements. In this study, the effect of oil modification on the rheological properties of the asphalt binder is investigated. To examine the effect of oil modification on binder characteristics, low temperature properties as well as high temperature performance of oil modified binders were evaluated. It is found that oils vary in their effects on asphalt binder performance. However, for all oils used in the study, adding an oil to binder can improve binder low temperature performance, and this result mainly attributed to the softening effect. In addition to that, a simple linear model is proposed to predict the performance grade of oil modified binder based on the properties of its constituents at high and low temperatures. Another part of this study focuses on the oil modification effect on asphalt binder thermal strain and stresses. A viscoelastic analytical procedure is combined with experimentally derived failure stress and strain envelopes to determine the controlling failure mechanism, strain tolerance or critical stress, in thermal cracking of oil modified binders. The low temperature failure results depict that oil modification has a good potential of improving the cracking resistance of asphalt binders during thermal cycles.

Book Analysis of the Low Temperature Rheological Properties of Rubberized Warm Mix Asphalt Binders

Download or read book Analysis of the Low Temperature Rheological Properties of Rubberized Warm Mix Asphalt Binders written by Hainian Wang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warm mix asphalt (WMA) has generated a lot of interest worldwide based on the potential to realize environmental benefits related to lower production temperature and safe disposal of crumb rubber (tires). However, barriers to complete implementation of WMA technology still exist because of the lack of understanding of how different additives affect the performance of crumb rubber modified (CRM) binders. This paper investigates the effects of three WMA additives and crumb rubber concentration on the low-temperature performance of the CRM binders. The WMA additives used in this study were Sasobit, RH, and Advera, and the ambient 40 mesh tire rubber at different concentrations of 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, and 25 % by the weight of asphalt binder were applied in this paper. Burgers model was used to describe the relationship between deformation and time for rubberized WMA binder. The models parameters such as relaxation time, delay time, creep stiffness, m-value and m/S(t)-ratio were applied to evaluate the low-temperature performance of the rubberized WMA binders. Furthermore, the statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was applied to quantify the effects of different WMA additives and crumb rubber concentrations on the rubberized asphalt binders' low-temperature performance. It was found that Advera could be used to enhance the low-temperature performance by enhancing the stress relaxation, whereas RH and Sasobit did not exhibit this ability, thereby weakening the low-temperature performance of the CRM binders. The crumb rubber concentration could significantly increase the rubberized WMA binders' low-temperature performance by influencing the flexural creep stiffness of the control binders.

  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book Additives for Coatings written by Johan Bieleman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No doubt: A perfect coating has to look brilliant! But other properties of coatings are also most important. Coatings have to be durable, tough and easily applicable. Additives are the key to success in achieving these characteristics, even though the amounts used in coating formulations are small. It is not trivial at all to select the best additives. In practice, many series of tests are often necessary, and the results do not explain, why a certain additive improves the quality of a coating and another one impairs the coating. This book is dedicated to developers and applicants of coatings working in research or production, and it is aimed at providing a manual for their daily work. It will answer the following questions: How do the most important groups of additives act? Which effects can be be achieved by their addition? Scientific theories are linked to practical applications. Emphasis is put on the optical aspects that are most important for the applications in practice. This book is a milestone in quality assurance in the complete field of coatings!
