Burkitt lymphoma has become one of the most prevalent cancers in the past two decades in which the number of people with the disease has increased, especially in Africa. Research indicates that burkitt lymphoma has emerged to be the fastest growing tumor among humans. Burkitt lymphoma was identified in 1956 by Denis Burkitt, and it is one of the principal forms on non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which affect immune cells. Epidemiological reports indicate that, Burkitt lymphoma is more prevalent in malaria endemic regions than other regions although it greatest impact is experienced in Africa where it affects children who are also experiencing episodes of malaria and Epstein-Barr viral infection. Epstein-Barr virus is believed to be the principal cause of infectious mononucleosis, which leads to the transformation of B-cells into tumor cells, especially following malaria episode which weakens the immune system. This is probably the reason as to why 98% of Burkitt lymphoma cases in Africa are linked to Epstein-Barr infection. Elsewhere in the U.S, the incidence of Burkitt lymphoma accounts for about 1,200 people annually in which 59% of all the patients diagnosed with the disease being adults above the age of 40 years. In Burkitt lymphoma, lymphocytes, primarily the B-cells of the immune system which are involved in cell-mediated immune response during pathogenic infections are affected. In most cases, the prevalence of the disease is enhanced by infections which weaken the immune system. For instance, malaria, Epstein-Barr viral infection and HIV are some of the diseases associated with a decrease of the immune system response. In addition, therapies which are immune-suppressive, especially those involved in organ transplantation to prevent transplant rejection and highly-active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) used for HIV/AIDS treatment facilitate the formation of cancerous B-cells. However, the physiology and anatomy of Burkitt lymphoma encompasses diverse aspects compared to other forms cancer.

Attention has been focused, for the most part, upon morphological issues and clinical matters. Although useful, this approach has many shortcomings. The true cytoidentity of primary neoplastic cells was not established by these methods, nor could their clonal nature be recognized. The more overt changes in immunological function, such as monoclonal gammopathies and immunodeficiencies, were appre ciated as important components of these diseases. However, subtle immunological perturbations were not recognized. Furthermore, associations were not established between the lymphoreticular neoplasms on the one hand and both primary and secondary immunological abnormalities on the other. There has been considerable recent progress in the fields of immunobiology, cytology, and immunochemistry. These new approaches have proved readily applicable to studies on the lymphomas. The term "lymphoma" has been applied to a heterogeneous group of neo plasms that involve lymphoid tissues. This term is not altogether satisfactory, since it implies that cells of primarily the lymphoid series are involved in the neoplastic process. Some neoplasms, heretofore classified as "lymphomas," now appear, from the results of penetrating analysis using newer methodology, to be malignan cies of the macrophage series, rather than of the lymphocytic series. These neo plasms include Hodgkin's disease and a minority of neoplasms previously referred to as "histiocytic" lymphomas. The majority of these "histiocytic" lymphomas are now known to be lymphoid malignancies involving the B-cell series.

While leukemias are already being 'phenotyped' routinely in clinical centers, continued research on the developmental sta ge of cells and cell membranes, expanding into a malignant clone, permits new snap shots on hemopoietic differentiation. Thus the discovery of leukemia-associated anti gens, which so far have not been found on subpopulations of normal cells, has greatly stimulated the discussion on 'differentiation antigens versus tumor antigens'. The proceedings reflect the considerable success which has been achieved very re cently in the classification of hemoblastomas. Consequently the number of leukemias which are unclassifiable by immunological methods have dwindled down to a small mi nority. New facts give rise to new questions. By including the main points of the discussions in the proceedings, we wanted to give the reader an opportunity to get an impression of the questions and conclusions raised and drawn by the participants on the basis of new - and frequently still unpublished - data.
