Book excerpt: There is a cloud-capped peak where gods and immortals while away their infinite days, and since the dawn of humanity everyone - whether they know it or not - has been trying to climb that mountain. But there are only four paths up its treacherous slope. Throughout history, people have wagered everything on their choice and fought wars against those who've decided differently. Each of these four paths - simply staying alive indefinitely, through magic or medicine; being resurrected; persisting as a soul; or living on through one's legacy - is revealed to us by a historical figure who serves as our guide. It is through these diverse individuals - such as the Egyptian queen Nefertiti; vitamin-obsessed Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling; author Mary Shelley; and Alexander the Great - that we come to understand how many of civilisation's greatest achievements have been born of our need to see our essence endure. As optimistic about the human condition as it is insightful, Immortality takes the reader on an eye-opening journey from the beginnings of civilisation to the present day. Bringing together history and philosophy, this fascinating book both enlightens and entertains, investigating whether it just might be possible to live forever, and whether that's something we should actually aspire to. But its most powerful and arresting argument is this - that it is our very preoccupation with defying mortality that has made our civilisation what it is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Immortality Triumphant: The Existence of a God and Human Immortality Philosophically Considered, and the Truth of Divine Revelation Substantiated The above fear great and interesting Subjects, that I have philosophically considered, embrace matter sufficient for at least four volumes of three hundred pages each, and hence I have been compelled to study condensation as well as brevity throughout, and in several instances to classify the materials of my subject in order to effect this end. Sensible of the solemnity and vast importance of my subject to man, and of the deep and thrilling interest that every reflecting mind must naturally feel in regard to its present happiness and future destiny, it should be read and understood by all. And as voluminous works are owned and read by comparatively but few individuals, not only on account of their price, but the discouraging thought of wading through an ocean of words, Often of extraneous matter, to' gain the desired information, so I have labored to obviate these objections, by presenting the great and important points of the subject in a small volume, which is offered as a cheap pocket companion to the Christian community. Book The Resurrection of Immortality

Download or read book The Resurrection of Immortality written by Mark S. McLeod-Harrison and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If humans are not capable of immortality, then eschatological doctrines of heaven and hell make little sense. On that Christians agree. But not all Christians agree on whether humans are essentially immortal. Some hold that the early church was right to borrow from the ancient Greek philosophers and to bring their sense of immortality to bear on the interpretation of biblical passages about the afterlife. Others, however, suggest that we are inherently mortal, and only conditionally immortal. This latter view is usually associated with an annihilationist interpretation of the doctrine of hell and a rejection of eternal torment. In a philosophical analysis and argument, McLeod-Harrison proposes that humans are, indeed, immortal, but not essentially so. But neither are we immortal accidentally or conditionally. Instead, immortality is an enduring property—a property we cannot lose once created. McLeod-Harrison carefully delineates the sense of immortality he defends and provides a broadly Christian philosophical argument for it. The argument, if correct, leaves the recent suggestion that the unredeemed are annihilated on unsteady metaphysical feet. However, McLeod-Harrison does not defend eternal conscious punishment for the unredeemed, but suggests some ways to think about the possibility of a universal salvation.

Download or read book Eternal God Eternal Life written by Philip G. Ziegler and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How ought Christian faith and theology understand the concept of human immortality today? And what, if anything, might be distinctively Christian about such a concept? The contributors to this volume explore how our thinking about the prospect of human immortality is decisively determined by what we receive of the limitless life of the triune God of the gospel, and how our understanding of immortality is made concrete by the Christian hope in 'the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting'. Debates about how best to understand the eternal life of God are directly significant to how we can imagine the promise of eternal life. While immortality is generally conceived to be a future qualification of human reality, theological approaches to the question of personal immortality must investigate the difference that the hope and promise of such eternal life makes in the living of present-day spiritual life as well as in our common moral and political existence. To understand immortality as an eschatological gift of God requires that we take account of it as a formative factor at the foundations of the Christian life.
