Yet most Protestants, and too many Catholics don't understand the role that God wants her to play in our lives. In Behold Your Mother, Tim Staples takes you through the Church's teachings about the Blessed Virgin Mary, showing their firm Scriptural and historical roots and dismantling the objections of those who mistakenly believe that Mary competes for the attention due Christ alone. Combining the best recent scholarship with a convert's in-depth knowledge of the arguments, Staples has assembled the most thorough and useful Marian apologetic you'll find anywhere. Relevant and essential -- Mary matters. Read Behold Your Mother and find out just how much.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It was mid-December 1610 in Mexico City. The Church was in its preparatory season of Advent, leading up to the celebration of Christ's birth at Christmas. The nuns of the Encarnacion convent had just celebrated the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, on 8 December. But now, in this time usually filled with joy, some of the nuns were nervous. Their choirbooks were missing. Without them, the nuns would not be able to celebrate the anniversary of Christ's birth adequately. A musician priest of the metropolitan cathedral, located just three blocks from the convent, had caused the nuns' alarm: Antonio Rodríguez Mata (d. 1643) had all five of the missing books. He had borrowed them from Sister Flor de Santa Clara, the convent "vicaria de coro" (choir vicar) but had failed to return them despite the convent's repeated requests. The diocesan vicar general and the attorney general were summoned. The nuns of the Encarnación demanded that Mata be imprisoned if he failed to return the books immediately following the denunciation. The threat of jail time was serious, but so too was the alleged offense: Mata was impeding the nuns from performing their liturgical music for Christmas"--

Many are familiar with the story of his selfless act at Auschwitz, where he sacrificed his own life to save a man who was a husband and father. But do you know about Kolbe’s deep love for Mary, whom he called the Immaculata? How he surrendered everything to Our Lady to grow in holiness and align his will to the will of God? How he consecrated his life to Mary? In Led by the Immaculata, Joshua Mazrin, a Kolbe devotee and Mariology expert, will introduce you to St. Maximilian Kolbe, explain the meaning of consecration and the objectives of the Knights of the Immaculata, walk you through the fourteen doable and practical steps of the consecration, and provide a step-by-step plan for completing the consecration. Kolbe taught that by giving our lives completely to Mary, the Immaculata, she would direct our will to the will of the Holy Spirit—that is, the will of God. Kolbe wanted this message shared far and wide and so founded the Knights of the Immaculata with the goal of consecrating as many people as possible to Mary and her son. Each step of the consecration journey is explained in practical and theological terms, making it accessible to all, regardless of vocation or age. While Kolbe initially targeted men, the principles of holiness are equally relevant to women. The book concludes by empowering you—men and women alike—to be evangelists for the Immaculata and the Gospel and to be spiritual leaders in your family, workplace, and community. Led by the Immaculata invites you to embrace a deeper devotion to Mary and emulate Kolbe’s path to holiness through the practical application of the fourteen steps in your daily life.

Book Music and Performance in the Book of Hours

Download or read book Music and Performance in the Book of Hours written by Michael Alan Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study uncovers the musical foundations and performance suggestions of books of hours, guides to prayer that were the most popular and widespread books of the late Middle Ages. Exploring a variety of musical genres and sections of books of hours with musical implications, this book presents a richly textured sound world gleaned from dozens of extant manuscript sources from fifteenth-century France. It offers the first overview of the musical content of these handbooks to liturgy and devotional prayer, together with cues that show scribal awareness for the articulation of sacred plainchants. Although books of hours lack musical notation, this survey elucidates the full range of musical genres and styles suggested both within and beyond the liturgical offices prescribed in books of hours. Privileging sound and ritual enactment in the experience of the hours, the survey complements studies of visual imagery that have dominated the category. The book’s interdisciplinary approach within a musical context, and beautiful full-color illustrations, will attract not only specialists in musicology, liturgy, and late medieval studies, but also those more broadly interested in the history of the book, memory, performance studies, and art history.
