Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their rich tradition, the Carmina Anacreontea transmitted in the Palatine Anthology have received little scholarly attention. This neglect is linked to questions concerning their authenticity. Long read as poems by the ancient lyricist Anacreon, they are now regarded instead as imitations of Anacreontic lyricism. This volume presents the latest findings on the language, poetology, tradition, and reception of this lyrical collection.

Book And with the Teian lyre imitate Anacreon

Download or read book And with the Teian lyre imitate Anacreon written by Veronika Lütkenhaus and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2023-08-14 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores, for the first time, the influence of Anacreon and the Anacreontic tradition on Horace's Odes and Epodes. It focuses first on the original fragments of Anacreon and their reception in Horace, paying attention to the central themes of wine, love, and satire. In a second part, the possibility of conscious Horatian reception of the earliest Carmina Anacreontea (and the broader Anacreontic tradition) as distinct from the original is discussed and shown to be highly probable. This imitation of imitation can be labelled, in Gérard Genette's words, as "literature in the third degree". As a significant predecessor of Horace, Anacreon can be described as no less than the central pivot between Archilochus and Hipponax, on the one hand, and Alcaeus and Sappho, on the other. He represents the tie between Horace's iambic and lyric personae and is thus a much more encompassing predecessor than any one of the other four above-mentioned counterparts.

Download or read book The Poetics of Imitation written by Patricia A. Rosenmeyer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western literature knows the anacreontic poems best in the translations or adaptations of such poets as Ronsard, Herrick and Goethe. This collection of poems, once assumed to be the work of Anacreon himself, was considered unworthy of serious attention after the poems were proved to be late Hellenistic and early Roman imitations by anonymous writers. This full-length treatment of the anacreontic corpus, first published in 1992, explores the complex poetics of imitation which inspired anacreontic composition for so many centuries in antiquity. The author reassesses Anacreon's own oeuvre, and then discusses the system of selective imitation practised by the anacreontic poets. The book explores what light the corpus can shed on ancient literary genres, intertextual influences, and the literary manifestations of symposiastic and erotic ideals in a post-classical society which looks back to an archaic model as its guiding force.A full translation of the anacreontic collection is included as an appendix and all Greek and Latin is translated.

Book excerpt: "Preserved in the Anthologia Palatina, the Carmina Anacreontea have enjoyed widespread reception. The sixty short poems on different sympotic topics such as love, wine, and song were composed predominantly duting the Imperial Age in imitation of Anacreon's archaic lyric. This volume presents the latest scholarship on the language, tradition, and reception of this collection and explores the poetics of imitation by focusing on aspects of mimesis, poiesis, and poetic inspiration."--
