Book Prisoners of War Prisoners of Peace

Download or read book Prisoners of War Prisoners of Peace written by Barbara Hately-Broad and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of servicemen of the belligerent powers were taken prisoner during World War II. Until recently, the popular image of these men has been framed by tales of heroic escape or immense suffering at the hands of malevolent captors. For the vast majority, however, the reality was very different. Their history, both during and after the War, has largely been ignored in the grand narratives of the conflict. This collection brings together new scholarship, largely based on sources from previously unavailable Eastern European or Japanese archives. Authors highlight a number of important comparatives. Whereas for the British and Americans held by the Germans and Japanese, the end of the war meant a swift repatriation and demobilization, for the Germans, it heralded the beginning of an imprisonment that, for some, lasted until 1956. These and many more moving stories are revealed here for the first time.

Book Pacific Places Pacific Histories

Download or read book Pacific Places Pacific Histories written by Brij V. Lal and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Places matter. We are shaped by them, and in turn we shape them physically and imaginatively. They connect us to time and locality, perhaps even to life and death itself. This is a book about places and how our engagement with them--complex, changing, and varied--forms and transforms our understanding of them, of ourselves, of the human condition itself. Pacific Places, Pacific Histories brings together leading Pacific Islands studies scholars and invites them to talk about the places they have inhabited and to contemplate the meaning of that experience. The result is a veritable collage of reflections, distinct and different from each other but moving in their collective impact. Our engagement with places becomes daily more complicated with the transnational movement of peoples, ideas, technologies, and cultures. Global capitalism relentlessly alters established ethnographic assumptions about the meaning and importance of where we are and have been. The essays presented here are about letting go, learning and un-learning, transgressing physical, emotional, and intellectual boundaries. They are about personal quests, narrated in distinctive voices, raising particular concerns. Together they contribute significantly to our understanding of how small islands in a vast ocean enable us to see ourselves and the world around us.

Book Learn Japanese

Download or read book Learn Japanese written by John Young and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1985-05-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After fifteen printings, the Learn Japanese: College Text series has been substantially revised. The incorporated revisions grew out of the authors' decade and more of classroom experience. Revisions were also made in accordance with recommendations proposed by instructors who have used the Learn Japanese series. The new edition, which reflects recent trends in language teaching, continues to emphasize an integrated approach in which speaking, hearing, reading, and writing Japanese all contribute to the language learning process. - The most significant improvement is the addition of Culture Notes to help clarify the sociolinguistic context in which the language is used. Since Japanese modes of communication are highly situational, the student of Japanese needs to be made aware of the different contexts in which speakers interact. Culture Notes, used in conjunction with Grammar Notes, Dialogs, and Useful Expressions, show how an understanding of cultural values and human relationships can enhance the student's mastery of language skills. - A new approach to language learning is used throughout the revised edition. The new sociolinguistic approach (which encourages the "generation of discourse") is integrated with the original pattern approach (which encourages the "generation of sentences"). - Many components of the first edition, such as Sentence Patterns, Grammar Notes, and Reviews, have been revised and/or rearranged. The result is a clearer, more natural, and more functional presentation of the Japanese language. The four volumes of Learn Japanese: New College Text were prepared by the Asian Division of the University of Maryland University College and are published by the University of Hawaii Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People from a dozen modern states were directly involved in the 1942 fall of Singapore: The United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, India, Pakistan, Nepal, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Indonesia, China and above all Malaysia and Singapore. To commemorate its 60th anniversary, the Department of History at the National University of Singapore organised an international conference of historians, students and war veterans on the theme Sixty Years On: The Fall of Singapore Revisited. This book presents a selection of the papers presented at the conference, revised for publication. It is not meant to be the last word on all aspects relating to the Malayan campaign and the fall of Singapore but rather an attempt to pull together reassessments of arguments of very long standing about major issues such as the Singapore strategy, with fresh contributions to our knowledge such as a discussion of how Japanese soldiers experienced the fighting on Singapore Island. Both conference and volume aimed to provide a well-rounded, state of the art discussion of the central issues and some of the shadows, relating to the fall of Singapore. READERSHIP: University lecturers/researchers, undergraduate students, academicians and those interested in History.

The Katakana Syllabary is also explained, enabling the student to read and write in Katakana. Book Narrating the Other

Download or read book Narrating the Other written by Megumi Kato and published by MAI Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the first extensive study of Japan in Australian literary consciousness. Narrating the other provides a broad chronological exploration of Australian writers' representations of the Japanese from the late 19th century to the 21st century. A comprehensive examination of available literature reveals the powerful and continuing influence of representations of Japan and the Japanese from the early 20th century up to the Pacific War. Images of 'Madame Butterfly', 'the stranger', 'the enemy', and later 'the ally' or 'partner' are shown to vary according to authors, situations and even wider international relations. It attempts to identify the patterns which Australian authors have used to portray and evaluate the Japanese, the changing nature of these patterns, their contextual relationship and their contribution to the formation of wider Australian views on Japan and the Japanese."--BOOK JACKET.
