Book Ils ont v cu dans l Alg rie en guerre

Download or read book Ils ont v cu dans l Alg rie en guerre written by Raphaël Delpard and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Historical Dictionary of Algeria

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Algeria written by Phillip C. Naylor and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algeria’s strategic regional and global importance continues to grow. Its hydrocarbon wealth, namely natural gas and oil, is impressive and its receipts are crucial to the national economy. The European Union is a particularly valued hydrocarbon importer and overall commercial partner. The bilateral relationship with France remains problematic and paradoxical. Algeria has demanded an apology for the imposition of colonialism; but it also recognizes the importance of France economically, politically, and militarily, e.g., the unrest in the Sahel (notably Mali). Furthermore, Algeria continues to recover from its recent, tragic civil strife characterized by terrorism and extremism. Its uncertain future, given its ageing leadership, rentier economy, and frustrated youth, is a critical concern. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of Algeria covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Algeria.

Book La guerre d Alg rie 1954 1962

Download or read book La guerre d Alg rie 1954 1962 written by Benjamin Neumayer and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-11 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Ils avaient 20 ans Ils ont fait la guerre d Alg rie written by Dominique Paganelli and published by Tallandier. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Culture in Language Learning

Download or read book Culture in Language Learning written by Hanne Leth Andersen and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical and modern foreign language studies no longer have a well-defined subject area, and language and culture can no longer be defined according to nations and national identities. New approaches are being developed with theoretical and methodological points of departure in new areas of research: for example, culture studies, anthropology, sociology, pragmatics and conversation analyses. The aim of modern language studies must therefore be redefined, and be more open for variation and diversity, both in culture and communication. The book discusses the relation between language and culture and is a direct result of the conference Culture in Language Learning, organised under the auspices of the Danish Language and Culture Network, which assembles researchers from language disciplines in Denmark. The aim is to examine how culture comes into the actual language code; into the use of language; and not least, into the learning and teaching of language. One of the book's main problematic areas thus concerns the learning and teaching of foreign and second languages in a globalised world where languages play a new role, both for the individual person, by virtue of internationalisation of education and work-life, and for cooperation across national borders. The articles elucidate these problematic points in relation to the historic development of foreign language disciplines, the meeting of language and culture, teaching traditions and language appropriation theories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Killing Strangers explores how acts of political violence have changed over time, becoming 'unchained' from inter-personal relationships.

Book Remembering French Algeria

Download or read book Remembering French Algeria written by Amy L. Hubbell and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015-06 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonized by the French in 1830, Algeria was an important French settler colony that, unlike its neighbors, endured a lengthy and brutal war for independence from 1954 to 1962. The nearly one million Pieds-Noirs (literally "black-feet") were former French citizens of Algeria who suffered a traumatic departure from their homes and discrimination upon arrival in France. In response, the once heterogeneous group unified as a community as it struggled to maintain an identity and keep the memory of colonial Algeria alive. Remembering French Algeria examines the written and visual re-creation of Algeria by the former French citizens of Algeria from 1962 to the present. By detailing the preservation and transmission of memory prompted by this traumatic experience, Amy L. Hubbell demonstrates how colonial identity is encountered, reworked, and sustained in Pied-Noir literature and film, with the device of repetition functioning in these literary and visual texts to create a unified and nostalgic version of the past. At the same time, however, the Pieds-Noirs' compulsion to return compromises these efforts. Taking Albert Camus's Le Mythe de Sisyphe and his subsequent essays on ruins as a metaphor for Pied-Noir identity, this book studies autobiographical accounts by Marie Cardinal, Jacques Derrida, Hélène Cixous, and Leïla Sebbar, as well as lesser-known Algerian-born French citizens, to analyze movement as a destabilizing and productive approach to the past.

Download or read book France s Colonial Legacies written by Fiona Barclay and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era of commemoration, France’s Colonial Legacies contributes to the debates taking place in France about the place of empire in the contemporary life of the nation, debates that have been underway since the 1990s and that now reach across public life and society with manifestations in the French parliament, media and universities. France’s empire and the gradual process of its loss is one of the defining narratives of the contemporary nation, contributing to the construction of its image both on the international stage and at home. While certain intellectuals present the imperial period as an historical irrelevance that ended in the years following the Second World War, the contested legacies of France’s colonies continue to influence the development of French society in the view of scholars of the postcolonial. This volume surveys the memorial practices and discourses that are played out in a range of arenas, drawing on the expertise of researchers working in the fields of politics, media, cultural studies, literature and film to offer a wide-ranging picture of remembrance in contemporary France.

Book Hexagonal Variations

Download or read book Hexagonal Variations written by Jo McCormack and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hexagonal Variations provides an essential overview of key debates about contemporary French society and culture. Concise, challenging and comprehensive, its chapters each address the processes of change and redefinition that characterise France today. Contributors analyse and situate cinematic, literary, online and visual texts, mediatic, political and everyday discourses, in each case pinpointing how diversity, plurality and reinvention inflect cultural and social evolution in France. The chapters in the collection share a key set of thematic concerns and raise topics for debate among scholars and students alike. Central to these are questions about France’s uncertain place and role in Europe and the wider world; the morphing topography of its capital; and the many conundrums posed by the persistence of Republican paradigms in a global environment. If France is no longer the exception, what are the versions and varieties of being French that are lived, thought and imagined in the new millennium?
