The village chiefs come to Sinas aid and Tuna is killed. It turns out that Tuna is actually a Fijian Prince who is under a spell and is unable to regain his human form. Before he dies, Tuna asks Sina to bury his head near her house. A few months later, a very special tree grows from where the head was buried. The tree is a coconut tree, one of the most important trees found in the islands of the Pacific, for its life giving fruits, leaves and fronds from which homes are thatched and other important traditional building materials and utensils are made.

Book Pacific Indigenous Psychology

Download or read book Pacific Indigenous Psychology written by Siautu Alefaio-Tugia and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-02 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of Pacific-Indigenous knowledge as insights of Oceanic citizen-science to inform culturally-safe practice for psychology. It profiles contemporary Pacific needs in areas of crisis such as family violence, education disparities and health inequities, and points to ancient Pacific-indigenous knowledges as tools of healing for global diasporic communities in need. The historical evolution of psychology’s knowledge base and practice illustrates a fundamental crisis in the method of producing knowledge for psychology - the absence of Pacific-indigenous cultural knowledge. It suggests more effective research methodologies grounded in Pacific-Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies for psychology and overall community capability. It fosters practice perspectives and strategies based on NIU-psychology (New Indigenous Understandings) for innovative solutions to modern-day crises of humanity.

Book Te Tala O Niuoku

Download or read book Te Tala O Niuoku written by Doug Munro and published by Sterling/Main Street. This book was released on 1990 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1865 a trading captain called at the tiny atoll of Nukulaelae in Tuvalu and obtained a 25-year lease to the estern islet of Niuoku on behalf of the German firm of J.C. Godeffroy & Sohn. The firm then developed a coconut plantation which was never free of controversy. There were quarrels between the people of Nukulaelae and the imported labourers and endless disagreements betwen Godeffroys and the people over the terms of the lease. The alienation of their largest islet caused considerable suffering to the people of Nukulaelae, whose numbers had been decimated by Peruvian slave raids a few years earlier, but the Germans refused to leave until the lease expired in 1890. Today, the events surrounding the German plantation at Niuoku is a tale of note in Nukulaelae recollection, and every year the community commemorates the day of rejoicing when the lease finally expired."--Back cover
