This book was released on 2013 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by a group of European and North American scholars extends the traditional boundaries associated with the study of baptismal fonts. Previous scholarship about baptismal fonts has often focused on the purely stylistic, iconographical and liturgical perspectives, using primarily ecclesiastical and liturgical documentation. This book shows the wealth of new information that baptismal fonts can offer when scholars adopt interdisciplinary approaches and engage in readings that question traditional assumptions inherited in scholarship.

Book excerpt: In this rich exposition on the theological, historical, and sacramental significance of the baptismal font, Regina Kuehn describes the space designated for Baptism as "a home for the church, a regular meeting place for believers, [and] a recognizable location to which one can point in memory of a liturgical event." Drawing on an impressive array of artistic paintings, drawings, and photographs, Kuehn offers an indispensable guide to building and refurbishing this sacramental space, while also providing rich insight into the experience and mystery of Baptism. Designed for parish staffs, architects, artists, craftsmen, priests, and all those involved in the building and renovating of churches, this resource will prove useful to any Catholic interested in a deeper understanding of our rich baptismal symbolism.
Download or read book Baptismal Imagery in Early Christianity written by Robin M. Jensen and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn from early Christian imagery about the theological meaning of baptism? Robin Jensen, a leading scholar of early Christian art and worship, examines multiple dimensions of the early Christian baptismal rite. She explores five models for understanding baptism--as cleansing from sin, sickness, and Satan; as incorporation into the community; as sanctifying and illuminative; as death and regeneration; and as the beginning of the new creation--showing how visual images, poetic language, architectural space, and symbolic actions signify and convey the theological meaning of this ritual practice. Considering image and action together, Jensen offers a holistic and integrated understanding of the power of baptism. The book is illustrated with photos.
Download or read book Sacramental Theology and the Decoration of Baptismal Fonts written by Frances Altvater and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baptismal fonts were necessary to the liturgical life of the medieval Christian. Baptism marked the entrance of the faithful into the right relation, with the Catholic Church representing the main cultural institution of medieval society. In the period between ca. 1050 and ca. 1220, the decoration of the font often had an important function: to underscore the theology of baptism in the context of the sacraments of the Catholic Church. This period witnessed a surge of concern about sacraments. Just as religious thinkers attempted to delineate the sacraments and define their function in sermons and Sentence collections, sculptural programs visualized the teaching of orthodox ideas for the lay audience. This book looks at three areas of primary concern around baptism as a sacrament – incarnation, initiation, and the practice of baptism within the institution of the Church – and the images that embody that religious discussion. Baptismal fonts have been recognized as part of the stylistic production of the Romanesque period, and their iconography has been generally explored as moral and didactic. Here, the message of these fonts is set within a very specific history of medieval Catholic sacramental theology, connecting erudite thinkers and lay users through their decoration and use.

Download or read book Living Water written by Robin Jensen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-11-19 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This general survey of early Christian baptismal iconography and architecture integrates visual depictions and physical settings of baptism with textual evidence for its practice and purpose. An opening overview of pictorial art (paintings, relief sculpture, mosaics, and ivories) prompts questions about components of the actual ritual which are treated in the literary sources. The study’s second half considers selected baptismal structures, examining the symbolism, purpose, and possible meaning of their spatial design and decorative programs. In most instances the synthesis of documentary and material evidence is enriching and complementary. However, even when physical and textual data diverge, their discontinuity demonstrates the variability of ritual performance and the perennial distinction between ideal and actual practice..
