Download or read book The Anglo Saxon Poems of Beowulf written by Benjamin Thorpe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anglo-Saxon Poems of Beowulf: The Scop or Gleeman's Tale, and the Fight at Finnesburg; With a Literal Translation, Notes, Glossary, Etc My first impulse was to print the text of the poem as it appears in the manuscript, with a literal translation in parallel columns, placing all conjectural emendations at the foot of each page; but, on comparing the text with the version in this juxta-position, so numerous and so enor mous and puerile did the blunders of the copyist appear, and, consequently, so great the discrepance between the text and the translation, that I found myself compelled to admit into the text the greater number of the conjectural emendations, consigning to the foot of the page the corre sponding readings of the manuscript. In every case which I thought might by others be considered questionable, I have followed the more usual course, of retaining in the text the reading of the manuscript, and placing the pro posed correction at foot. Book Specimens of Anglo Saxon Poetry Vol 2

Download or read book Specimens of Anglo Saxon Poetry Vol 2 written by William Alexander Craigie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of Anglo-Saxon Poetry, Vol. 2: Early Christian Lore and Legend The-selections contained in the following pages include the small number of pieces of anglo-saxon poetry directly bearing upon the life, death, and ascension of Christ, to gether with the more interesting portions of the poems which recount the legends of the early saints Andrew, Juliana, and Helena, and of the later Guthlac. The prose versions of the 'legend of St. Andrew' and the 'invention of the Cross', printed in the corresponding 'specimens of anglo-saxon Prose II', will enable the reader to identify the place which each extract occupies in the complete poems. There is no prose version of the legend oi-juliana, and that of Guthlac gives but slight aid in the study of the two poems relating to his life and death. The Runic passages at the end of the 'fates of the Apostles', 'juliana', and 'elene', in which the name of Cynewulf is recoi'ded, _ are not given here, as they have no bearing on the matter of these pieces, but will be included in a laternumber of this series. Book Specimens of Anglo Saxon Poetry Vol 1

Download or read book Specimens of Anglo Saxon Poetry Vol 1 written by William Alexander Craigie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specimens of Anglo-Saxon Poetry, Vol. 1: Biblical and Classical Themes The matter contained in the following specimens as well as order in which these are arranged, corresponds to a great extent with the contents of the first part of the 'specimens of anglo-saxon Prose'. By a comparison of the two the student will be able to appreciate the methods of the anglo-saxon poets in the treatment of themes taken from the Old Testament and from classical sources. As the specimens are intended to be used in connexion with the study of anglo-saxon literature, and the general form in which the texts have been preserved is not original, a more normal spelling than that actually found in the manuscripts has here and there been introduced. Such alterations are neither numerous nor important, and the removal of the exceptional forms not Oulv facilitates the understanding of the text, but will help to prevent undue importance being attached to mere matters of form. As before, I am much indebted to Dr. Schmidt Petersen of Bredstedt for generous help in supervising the printing of this work.
