Book The Oxford Handbook of Indian Philosophy

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Indian Philosophy written by Jonardon Ganeri and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Indian Philosophy tells the story of philosophy in India through a series of exceptional individual acts of philosophical virtuosity. It brings together forty leading international scholars to record the diverse figures, movements, and approaches that constitute philosophy in the geographical region of the Indian subcontinent, a region sometimes nowadays designated South Asia. The volume aims to be ecumenical, drawing from different locales, languages, and literary cultures, inclusive of dissenters, heretics and sceptics, of philosophical ideas in thinkers not themselves primarily philosophers, and reflecting India's north-western borders with the Persianate and Arabic worlds, its north-eastern boundaries with Tibet, Nepal, Ladakh and China, as well as the southern and eastern shores that afford maritime links with the lands of Theravda Buddhism. Indian Philosophy has been written in many languages, including Pali, Prakrit, Sanskrit, Malayalam, Urdu, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Persian, Kannada, Punjabi, Hindi, Tibetan, Arabic and Assamese. From the time of the British colonial occupation, it has also been written in English. It spans philosophy of law, logic, politics, environment and society, but is most strongly associated with wide-ranging discussions in the philosophy of mind and language, epistemology and metaphysics (how we know and what is there to be known), ethics, metaethics and aesthetics, and metaphilosophy. The reach of Indian ideas has been vast, both historically and geographically, and it has been and continues to be a major influence in world philosophy. In the breadth as well as the depth of its philosophical investigation, in the sheer bulk of surviving texts and in the diffusion of its ideas, the philosophical heritage of India easily stands comparison with that of China, Greece, the Latin west, or the Islamic world.

Book Mathematics In Ancient Jaina Literature

Download or read book Mathematics In Ancient Jaina Literature written by Surender K Jain and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains selected articles presented in the ZOOM conference on History of Mathematics in Jain Literature, December 2020, and also contains articles invited by the editors on specific topics. The main objective for the conference was to bring to the attention of historians in mathematics that there is a plenty of literature written by monks and scholars in Jaina literature that contains elements of arithmetic, algebra and geometry, independent of discoveries by other cultures in the past. The talks and the discussions at the conference highlighted a need for a volume that can be recommended as a reference book for a course on History of Mathematics in the Departments of Mathematics and Education in colleges and universities. This is our hope that the present volume would fill up the gap on the lack of knowledge of past Jaina contributions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The religious tradition of the Jainas, unique in many respects, presents a fascinating array of doctrinal and social structures that stem from the anti-vedic movements of ancient times. Drawing extensively on primary sources, Professor Jaini provides a comprehensive introduction to the Jaina experience. Beginning with the Life of Mahavira the author elucidates the essentials of Jaina cosmology and philosophy as well as of the path of purification through which the soul may escape from its Karmic defilements and attain eternal salvation. This path constitutes the integral element within the broader frame-work of Jaina literature, lay ritual and the socio-historical factors, which enabled Jainism to survive and prosper to the present day. In particular, the author has examined the cardinal doctrine of ahimsa (non-harming), both in its impact upon Jaina religious consciousness and as a standard in applying its sacred principles to the conduct of every day life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not being satisfied with the interpretation offered by Sankara and his followers, or some other teachers the author has attempted in the following pages to present to the readers his own interpretation of the work as he has understood it. But in no way does he claim that his interpretation is the interpretation, i.e., the interpretation intended by Gaudapada himself. In the present volume the author has given a new edition of the text of the Agamasastra based on a number of MSS and different editions, followed by an English translation. After this comes his annotation. At the end there are Appendixes including the text and English translation of the Mandukya Upanisad, VAriants of the MSS used for the edition of the text of the Agamasastra, and different indexes.

Book An Epitome of Jainism

Download or read book An Epitome of Jainism written by K. B. Jindal and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: PYTHAGORAS called 'three' the perfect number-expressive of beginning, middle and end. The concept of Trinity is common to most religions. The Christians have the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. The Hindus have the Brahma, Vishnu and Mahes. The Buddhists have Buddha, His Order, and the Law. The Jainas' Holy Trinity consists of Right Belief, Right Knowledge and Right Conduct. If we have to anthropomorphize abstract virtues, we have had in modern times the three Ascended Masters-Barrister Jugmander Lal, Brahmchari Sital Pershad and Pandit Ajit Prasada. Between them, they exhausted all possibilities of translation and interpretation of the Sacred Scriptures. It is not possible for a layman to go through all that copia verborum in a lifetime. This volume is an attempt to put the wisdom of the Ancient in a nutshell.
