Book excerpt: Anglo-saxon poetry was circulated orally in a preliterate society, and gathered at last into books over some six centuries before the Norman Conquest ended English independence. Against the odds some of these books survive today. This anthology of prose translations covers most of the surviving poetry, revealing a tradition which is outstanding among early medieval literatures for its sophisticated exploration of the human condition in a mutable, finite, but wonderfully diverse and meaning-filled world.

Book Writing the Map of Anglo Saxon England

Download or read book Writing the Map of Anglo Saxon England written by Nicholas Howe and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent Anglo-Saxonist Nicholas Howe explores how the English, in the centuries before the Norman Conquest, located themselves both literally and imaginatively in the world. His elegantly written study focuses on Anglo-Saxon representations of place as revealed in a wide variety of texts in Latin and Old English, as well as in diagrams of holy sites and a single map of the known world found in British Library, Cotton Tiberius B v. The scholar's investigations are supplemented and aided by insights gleaned from his many trips to physical sites. The Anglo-Saxons possessed a remarkable body of geographical knowledge in written rather than cartographic form, Howe demonstrates. To understand fully their cultural geography, he considers Anglo-Saxon writings about the places they actually inhabited and those they imagined. He finds in Anglo-Saxon geographic images a persistent sense of being far from the center of the world, and he discusses how these migratory peoples narrowed that distance and developed ways to define themselves.

A Choice of Anglo-Saxon Verse contains the Old English texts of all the major short poems, such as 'The Battle of Maldon', 'The Dream of the Rood', 'The Wanderer' and 'The Seafarer', as well as a generous representation of the many important fragments, riddles and gnomic verses that survive from the seventh to the twelfth centuries, with facing-page verse translations. Book The Word Exchange Anglo Saxon Poems in Translation

Download or read book The Word Exchange Anglo Saxon Poems in Translation written by Greg Delanty and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dazzling variety of Anglo-Saxon poetry brought to life by an all-star cast of contemporary poets in an authoritative bilingual edition. Encompassing a wide range of voices-from weary sailors to forlorn wives, from heroic saints to drunken louts, from farmers hoping to improve their fields to sermonizers looking to save your soul—the 123 poems collected in The Word Exchange complement the portrait of medieval England that emerges from Beowulf, the most famous Anglo-Saxon poem of all. Offered here are tales of battle, travel, and adventure, but also songs of heartache and longing, pearls of lusty innuendo and clear-eyed stoicism, charms and spells for everyday use, and seven "hoards" of delightfully puzzling riddles. Featuring all-new translations by seventy-four of our most celebrated poets—including Seamus Heaney, Robert Pinsky, Billy Collins, Eavan Boland, Paul Muldoon, Robert Hass, Gary Soto, Jane Hirshfield, David Ferry, Molly Peacock, Yusef Komunyakaa, Richard Wilbur, and many others—The Word Exchange is a landmark work of translation, as fascinating and multivocal as the original literature it translates.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Anglo-Saxon Poetry: Edited, Together With Additional Notes, Introductory Notices, &C As the question of alliteration (which indeed requires but a short notice) will be more conveniently treated Of after we shall have ascertained the existence and nature of that metre Of which it forms the chief ornament, I shall commence with those topics which are in themselves of the greatest extent and interest, and shall endeavour to show both that the anglo-saxon poetry does really differ from their prose by the usage of metrical divisions, and that the general rhythm and cadence of their verse is not alto gether undiscoverable.
