This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Illuminated Manuscripts, Principally Biblical and Liturgical, Exhibited on the Occasion of the Meeting of the Church Congress in October, MCMVIII The exhibition of illuminated manuscript, of which a descriptive catalogue will be found on pages 19-47, has been specially arranged in connection with the Church Congress which opens its proceedings in this city on the 6th of October. Doubtless many members of the Congress will be visiting Manchester for the first time, and it may not be without interest to them to learn, by means of this exhibition, something of the character of the collections which have made this library famous in the world of letters, and which, at the same time, have helped to make Manchester a centre of attraction for scholars from all parts of the world. It is impossible, within the limited space at our disposal, to attempt to convey anything like an adequate idea of the interest and importance of the library's collections in general, comprising, as they do, upwards of 120,000 printed books and 7,000 manuscripts. We have sought, therefore, to reveal something of the magnificence of the manuscripts and of the jewelled book-covers in which the library is so rich. We have designedly restricted our selection to the Biblical, liturgical, and other religious manuscripts in the collection, including a few Oriental examples, in order that the exhibition may be in keeping with the character of the Congress. Book Catalogue of the Fifty Manuscripts and Printed Books Bequeathed to the British Museum by Alfred H Huth Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catalogue of the Fifty Manuscripts and Printed Books Bequeathed to the British Museum by Alfred H Huth Classic Reprint written by British Museum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Fifty Manuscripts and Printed Books Bequeathed to the British Museum by Alfred H. Huth These figures in no way represent the proportions of these two categories of books in the Huth Library. The Library was essentially a library of printed books; but the few manuscripts which it included were selected with taste and discrimination, and were worth more than all except a few of the printed books. In their case, moreover, the question of duplication could not arise. The importance of the printed books received under the bequest is shown in Mr. Pollard's Introduction but it will be convenient to say aword here about the manuscripts. One of them (no. X) was selected on account of the coloured engravings which it contains, by the artist known as the Master of the Berlin Passion. The others all represent various phases in the art of miniature only one, the unique copy of the romance of Merlin, could have been included on the ground of its text. One is of English workmanship, five of French, one German, one Dutch, two Flemish, and two Italian. Since the British Museum already possesses by far the finest collection of English illuminated manuscripts in existence, this preponderance of foreign examples is entirely to its advantage. The one English example (no. III) is, however, one of the most valuable, though not the most generally attractive, in the collection. It is a Psalter, of the last quarter of the thirteenth century, decorated in the calendar with representa tions of the occupations of the several months, and in the body of the manuscript with full-page miniatures, historiated initials, and decorative borders. The whole belongs to that fine period when the miniaturist was approaching the full mastery of his art, but when the amount of decoration allowed to the page was still restrained within comparatively narrow limits. Book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen

Download or read book Culturgeschichtliche Novellen written by W. H. Riehl and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others.
