Some are well established strains of proven worth while others are new and relatively untried. It is impossible to determine, from the appearance of the seed in the bag, the desirability of any particular hybrid. The real test of its value is determined by planting it along with other hybrids to check its field performance. The Iowa Corn Yield test attempts to provide comparable performance records on a number of hybrids. It is believed that the information presented in this bulletin should afford a reliable comparison of the relative performance of various hybrids when grown in different parts of the state. Data are presented on each entry for yield, stand moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height, dropped ears and damaged corn. As shown in Table 1, all test fields were planted after May 25. Conditions following planting Of the test fields were favorable except at Alhambra, where heavy rains in early June drowned out the corn in parts Of the field and lowered the vigor of the plants generally. The surviving plants never recovered from this early setback, as evidenced by the low yields. Too little rain fall during August lowered the yields on the Sullivan and Alhambra fields. The field tests reported herein have therefore been made in order to help the farmer to choose those strains of corn that have outstanding merit, and to help the producer in his efforts to develop such strains. They are a part of a corn-improvement program conducted in coopera tion with the Division of Cereal Creps and Diseases, Bureau of Plant Industry, U. S. Department of Agriculture, and the Illinois State Natural History Survey. The data for the three previous years of these tests are reported in Bulletins 411, 427, and 429 of this Station.
