Book Franciscan Literature of Religious Instruction before the Council of Trent

Download or read book Franciscan Literature of Religious Instruction before the Council of Trent written by Bert Roest and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides, for the first time, an exhaustive discussion of the Franciscan production of texts of religious instruction during the later medieval period (c. 1210-c. 1550). In eight chapters, it introduces the reader to the most important Franciscan sermon cycles, the Franciscan guidelines for living the life of evangelical perfection, the many Franciscan novice training manuals, the Franciscan catechisms and confession manuals, the Franciscan output of liturgical handbooks, the large number of Franciscan texts containing more wide-ranging forms of religious edification, and Franciscan prayer guides. This book provides medievalists and Renaissance scholars alike with a new tool to assess the intellectual and religious transformations between the thirteenth and the sixteenth century, and contributes to the current re-interpretation of the late medieval pastoral revolution.

Book The Cambridge History of Christianity Volume 4 Christianity in Western Europe c 1100 c 1500

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Christianity Volume 4 Christianity in Western Europe c 1100 c 1500 written by Miri Rubin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early middle ages, Europe developed complex and varied Christian cultures, and from about 1100 secular rulers, competing factions and inspired individuals continued to engender a diverse and ever-changing mix within Christian society. This volume explores the wide range of institutions, practices and experiences associated with the life of European Christians in the later middle ages. The clergy of this period initiated new approaches to the role of priests, bishops and popes, and developed an ambitious project to instruct the laity. For lay people, the practices of parish religion were central, but many sought additional ways to enrich their lives as Christians. Impulses towards reform and renewal periodically swept across Europe, led by charismatic preachers and supported by secular rulers. This book provides accessible accounts of these complex historical processes and entices the reader towards further enquiry.

Book Religious Orders and Religious Identity Formation ca 1420 1620

Download or read book Religious Orders and Religious Identity Formation ca 1420 1620 written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the transformative force of Observant reforms during the long fifteenth century, and with the massive literary output by Observant religious, a token of a profound pastoral professionalization that provided religious and lay people alike with encompassing models of religious perfection, as well as with new tools to shape their religious identity. The essays in this work contend that these models and tools had an ongoing effect far into the sixteenth century (on all sides of the emerging confessional divide). At the same time, the controversies surrounding Observant reforms resulted in new sensibilities with regard to religious practices and religious nomenclature, which would fuel many of the early sixteenth-century controversies. Book Moral Conversion in Scripture Self and Society

Download or read book Moral Conversion in Scripture Self and Society written by Krijn Pansters and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral Conversion in Scripture, Self, and Society offers a broad – historical, theological, and philosophical – reflection on the phenomenon of moral conversion. Examining life-changing transformations within trajectories of spiritual and moral growth, the contributors to this volume show how individuals move, or should move, in one way or another, away from the pursuit of solipsistic satisfactions, through the practice of self-awareness and the performance of social attentiveness, toward the prioritization of shared values. Together, they address the difficulty of realizing in selves and societies some sort of definitive moral conversion – of final turn toward the truly good. Book Teaching and Tradition

Download or read book Teaching and Tradition written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the crucial role of teaching in the process of tradition. The various essays present case studies, written by specialists in the field, on themes drawn from the biblical, Jewish and Christian practice of ‘tradition’, the passing on of faith from generation to generation. Underlying these essays is the conviction that teaching is a privileged context for the study of tradition, since it always both preserves and renews tradition. There is no tradition without teaching, in which the past is interpreted in the present and the present is seen in the light of the past. Contributors are: Jan Bouwens, Rob V.J. Faesen, Leon Mock, Jos Moons, Krijn Pansters, Henk J. M. Schoot, Rudi A. te Velde, Archibald L. H. M. van Wieringen, and Ruben J. van Wingerden.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the deserts of Egypt to the emergence of the great monastic orders, the story of late antique and medieval monasticism in the West used to be straightforward. But today we see the story as far 'messier' - less linear, less unified, and more historicized. In the first part of this book, the reader is introduced to the astonishing variety of forms and experiences of the monastic life, their continuous transformation, and their embedding in physical, socio-economic, and even personal settings. The second part surveys and discusses the extensive international scholarship on which the first part is built. The third part, a research tool, rounds off the volume with a carefully representative bibliography of literature and primary sources.

Book Fictive Orders and Feminine Religious Identities 1200 1600

Download or read book Fictive Orders and Feminine Religious Identities 1200 1600 written by Alison More and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any visitor to Belgium or the Netherlands is immediately struck by the number of convents and beguinages (begijnhoven) in both major cities and small towns. Their number and location in urban centres suggests that the women who inhabited them once held a prominent role. Despite leaving a visible mark on cities in Europe, much of the story of these women - known variously as beguines, tertiaries, klopjes, recluses, and anchoresses - remains to be told. Instead of aspiring to live as traditional religious, they transcended normative assumptions about religion and gender and had a very real impact on their religious and secular worlds. The sources for their tale are often fragmentary and difficult to interpret. However, careful scrutiny allows their voices to be heard. Drawing on an array of sources including religious rules, sermons, hagiographic vitae, and rapiaria, Fictive Orders and Feminine Religious Identities traces the story of pious laywomen between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. It both emphasizes the innovative roles of women who transcended established forms of institutional religious life and reveals the ways in which historiographical habits have obscured the dynamic and fluid nature of their histories. By highlighting the development of irregular and extraregular communities and tracing the threads of monasticisation that wove their way around pious laywomen, this book draws attention to the vibrant and dynamic culture of feminine lay piety that persisted from the later middle ages onwards.
