Book Canon Law and the Letters of Ivo of Chartres

Download or read book Canon Law and the Letters of Ivo of Chartres written by Christof Rolker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivo of Chartres was one of the most learned scholars of his time, a powerful bishop and a major figure in the so-called 'Investiture Contest'. Christof Rolker here offers a major new study of Ivo, his works and the role he played in the intellectual, religious and political culture of medieval Europe around 1100 AD. Comparing Ivo's extensive correspondence to the contemporary canon law collections attributed to him, Dr Rolker provides a new interpretation of their authorship. Contrary to current assumptions, he reveals that Ivo did not compile the Panormia, showing that its compiler worked in a distinctly different mental framework from Ivo. These findings call for a reassessment of the relationship between Church reform and scholasticism and shed new light on Ivo as both a scholar and bishop.

Book From a Reading Book to a Structuralized Canonical Collection

Download or read book From a Reading Book to a Structuralized Canonical Collection written by Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formation or developing process of the Ivonian work (i.e. Decretum, Panormia, Tripartita) is an emblematic example for the proper textual-history of Medieval Canonical Collections before the late 12th century. The recent studies concerning the Pre-Gratian canon law collections show well how the earlier meaning of “canonical collection” differs from its classical meaning. The fundamental intention was to summarize the whole of canon law which – as “ius sacrum” – served the daily life of the Church and was useful in every field of the ecclesiastical activity. The textual families of Ivo’s canonical work and the textual variants of these families demonstrate well this intention. In this present volume are described several 11th-12th century manuscripts and fragments of the Ivonian canon law collection. The precise paleographical, codicological and textual-critical analysis which was done by the author has improved the considerations on the step by step textual-development. These new results have shown in new light Ivo’s compiling work.

Book Stolen Churches or Bridges to Orthodoxy

Download or read book Stolen Churches or Bridges to Orthodoxy written by Vladimir Latinovic and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout their shared history, Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches have lived through a very complex and sometimes tense relationship –-not only theologically, but also politically. In most cases such relationships remain to this day; indeed, in some cases the tension has increased. In July 2019, scholars of both traditions gathered in Stuttgart, Germany, for an unprecedented conference devoted to exploring and overcoming the division between these churches. This book, the second in a two-volume set of the essays presented at the conference, explores the ecumenical and practical implications of the relationship between Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches. Like the conference, the volume brings together representatives of these Churches, as well as theologians from different geographical contexts where tensions are the greatest. The published essays represent the great achievements of the conference: willingness to engage in dialogue, general openness to new ideas, and opportunities to address difficult questions and heal inherited wounds.

Book Pre Gratian Medieval Canonical Collections

Download or read book Pre Gratian Medieval Canonical Collections written by Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The canonical collections took their starting point from the ‘sacred law’ (ius sacrum) characteristic of canon law, since its norms promote the sanctification of the individual persons. This principle was the basis for the compilation of the so-called Pre-Gratian canon law collections, too. In the recent research, there have arisen new stresses on the better understanding of how this textual development of canonical collections had happened prior the Decretum Gratiani. An original canonical textual witness testifies about the circumstances of its origin, and, indeed, about the physical effects on the text during daily usage. The endeavor to issue the complete canon law did not mean only the composition of the universal canonical norms, but also the gathering of the particular norms, inveterate customs, or theological statements that could set the contents of the ecclesiastical discipline in the proper light.

Download or read book Prologus written by Saint Ivo (Bishop of Chartres) and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2004 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prologue to Bishop Ivo of Chartres' Decretum and Panormia has long been recognized as a seminal text in medieval canon law. It can be fairly called the first extended treatment of ecclesiastical jurisprudence. In its attention to categories of law and context, it also demonstrates the nascent scholastic method. This treatise on the tension between rigor and mercy in judgment - and how they could be reconciled through dispensation - spoke not only to legal and theological concerns of the early twelfth century but also to enduring questions about the nature and limits of ecclesiastical law. This book offers the first critical edition of the text based not only on extensive examination of the manuscripts but also the sources Ivo used in its composition. This enables a detailed examination of the text, which, from start to finish, reveals Ivo's conviction that love, caritas, was the essence of canon law.
