Book The Making and Unmaking of Mediterranean Landscape in Italian Literature

Download or read book The Making and Unmaking of Mediterranean Landscape in Italian Literature written by Tullio Pagano and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-04-29 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on literary representations of the northern Italian region of Liguria, whose landscape has been portrayed by internationally-known Italian poets and novelists, from Eugenio Montale to Italo Calvino. The author argues that the most perceptive authors situate themselves on a metaphorical ridge dividing the “dark side” of Mediterranean landscape, with its harsh and mountainous territory, from the sun-drenched Riviera, celebrated by the tourist industry and for the most part destroyed during the so-called economic boom. The complex and often antithetical concepts of landscape examined in the introduction inform the author’s readings of those modern and contemporary writers who have tried to make sense of the ambivalences present in Ligurian landscape, from the period of Italian Risorgimento to the present.

Download or read book Art of the Landscape written by Raffaele Milani and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesthetics deals with art, a human construction, but what one experiences when placed before nature is also an aesthetic feeling - the countryside is a place of reflection like no other. In The Art of the Landscape, Raffaele Milani interprets natural landscapes as an aesthetic category. Drawing from philosophical traditions, literature, and art, he calls the reader's attention to a special consciousness, originally established during the pre-Romantic age, that has become a distinctive feature of contemporary spirituality. Focusing on the definition of landscapes in relation to the concepts of nature, environment, territory, and man-made settings such as gardens and cities, Milani examines the origins of the predilection for natural scenery in the works of landscape painters and in travel literature. He addresses the distinctness of the aesthetic experience of landscapes, analyses the role of aesthetic categories, and explores landscape art as a medium of contemplation. What emerges is an original morphology of natural beauty derived from the scrutiny of landscape elements most frequently associated with aesthetic emotion - the colour of water and the sky, earth and stones, fire and volcanic eruptions, ruins and the mountains - an analysis especially relevant given the increasing fragility of our natural environment.

Book Paesaggio e letteratura

Download or read book Paesaggio e letteratura written by Michael Jakob and published by Olschki. This book was released on 2005 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book La Rappresentazione Del Paesaggio Nella Letteratura E Nel Cinema Dell italia Contemporanea

Download or read book La Rappresentazione Del Paesaggio Nella Letteratura E Nel Cinema Dell italia Contemporanea written by Paolo Chirumbolo and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how landscape, place, and territory play a crucial role in all forms of aesthetic communication. Whether real, mythological, fantastic, allegorical, or symbolic, they are essential constituents of the verbal and visual construction of an artwork. The authors show how space determines narrative plots and shapes emotional, rational, and social tendencies of any aesthetic expression. The analysis has shifted from the principles of mimesis to recent critical attention given to specific perspectives in different cultural lenses. This volume, edited by two enterprising scholars especially interested in mapping new trends in Italian literature and cinema, is a brilliant collection of theoretical and analytical essays. These writings explore the issues of aesthetics from a plurality of angles related to the literary and cinematic treatment of space.

Book Manuscript Poetics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Francesco Marco Aresu
  • Publisher : University of Notre Dame Pess
  • Release : 2023-11-15
  • ISBN : 0268206473

Download or read book Manuscript Poetics written by Francesco Marco Aresu and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manuscript Poetics explores the interrelationship between the material features of textual artifacts and the literary aspects of the medieval Italian texts they preserve. This original study is both an investigation into the material foundations of literature and a reflection on notions of textuality, writing, and media in late medieval and early modern Italy. Francesco Marco Aresu examines the book-objects of manuscripts and early printed editions, asking questions about the material conditions of production, circulation, and reception of literary works. He invites scholars to reconcile reading with seeing (and with touching) and to challenge contemporary presumptions about technological neutrality and the modes of interfacing and reading. Manuscript Poetics investigates the correspondences between textuality and materiality, content and medium, and visual-verbal messages and their physical support through readings of Dante Alighieri’s Vita nova, Giovanni Boccaccio’s Teseida, and Francesco Petrarca’s canzoniere (Rerum vulgarium fragmenta). Aresu shows that Dante, Boccaccio, and Petrarca evaluated and deployed the tools of scribal culture to shape, signal, or layer meanings beyond those they conveyed in their written texts. Medieval texts, Aresu argues, are uniquely positioned to provide this perspective, and they are foundational to the theoretical understanding of new forms and materials in our media-saturated contemporary world.

Book Ecocritical Approaches to Italian Culture and Literature

Download or read book Ecocritical Approaches to Italian Culture and Literature written by Pasquale Verdicchio and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume provide a theorization of what we might call the “denatured” wild, in other words a notion of environmental “restoration” or "reinhabitation" that recognizes and reconfigures the human factor as an interdependent entity. Acknowledging the contributions of Marco Armerio, Serenella Iovino, Giovanna Ricoveri, Patrick Barron and Anna Re among others, Ecocritical Approaches to Italian Culture and Literature: The Denatured Wild negotiates the ground within the historicizing, theoretical perspectives, and surveying spirit of these writers. Despite the central role that nature has played in Italian culture and literature, there has been an evident lack of critical approaches free of the bridles of the socio-political manipulations of nationalism. The authors in this collection, by recognizing the groundbreaking work of many non-Italian ecocritics, challenge the narrowly defined conventions of Italian Studies and illuminates complexities of an Italian ecocriticism that reveals a rich environmentally engaged literary and cultural tradition.

Book Basilicata and Southern Italy Between Film and Ecology

Download or read book Basilicata and Southern Italy Between Film and Ecology written by Alberto Baracco and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an open, transdisciplinary living space (also green) through which to explore the different connections between Basilicata and Southern Italy, cinema, and ecology, and thus to reflect on the different forms through which the historical, cultural, and social contexts of Southern Italian regions have been variously identified and represented. In order to explore these connections, the volume embraces a wide range of perspectives that may all be grouped under the key term film ecocriticism, offering the reader a thorough analysis not only of the different ways of representing reality but also of the processes of signification through which reality itself can be understood, rethought, and transformed. This is the general framework within which the authors consider film as a proper, effective medium for ecocritical and ecophilosophical reflections concerning not only Basilicata (to which the greater part of the volume is dedicated) but also Southern Italy and, therefore, its history and its territories, communities, and identities. Furthermore, in an even more general sense, Basilicata and Southern Italy reconnects with the very idea of the South, and of all Souths, to which this volume is dedicated.
