Against the backdrop of the controversial notion of the Venetian realm as a colonial empire, essays from a range of specialists examine how Venice negotiated control over the territories, resources, and traditions of different empires (Byzantine, Roman, Mamluk, Ottoman) while developing its own claims of authority. Focusing in particular on questions of belonging and status in the Venetian overseas territories, the volume incorporates observations on the daily realities of Venetian rule: how did Venice negotiate claims of authority in light of former and ongoing imperial belongings? What was the status of colonial subjects and ships in the metropolis and in foreign territories? In what ways did Venice accept and continue old forms of imperial belonging? Here, political scientist Jakub J. Grygiel brings to light the importance of incorporating geography into grand strategy. He argues that states can increase and maintain their position of power by pursuing a geostrategy that focuses on control of resources and lines of communication. Grygiel examines case studies of Venice, the Ottoman Empire, and China in the global fifteenth century—all great powers that faced a dramatic change in geopolitics when new routes and continents were discovered. The location of resources, the layout of trade networks, and the stability of state boundaries played a large role in the success or failure of these three powers. Grygiel asserts that, though many other aspects of foreign policy have changed throughout history, strategic response to geographical features remains one of the most salient factors in establishing and maintaining power in the international arena.

It actually lasted much longer, spanning the whole longue durée of the lives of the courts of the ancient regime. The present volume intends to fill this gap, presenting for the first time a comprehensive examination of the subject of the court artist from sixteenth to seventeenth century and the transformations of this role. “Court artist” is here defined as one who received a regular salary, and was therefore attached to the court by a more or less exclusive service relationship. The book is divided in six chapters: each of them examines the position of the court artist in the service of the most important ruling families in Italy (the Savoy in Turin, the Gonzaga in Mantua, the Este in Modena, the Della Rovere in Pesaro and Urbino, the Medici in Florence) and in papal Rome, a particular and unique center of power.

Published here for the first time are Palladio's preparatory materials for an illustrated edition of Polybius' Histories alongside Palladio's material for his edition of Julius Caesar' Commentaries, (1575). Long thought to have been lost, his original Polybius has now been recomposed by drawing on three manuscript copies: the mock-up used by Palladio to plan the edition, rediscovered in the London British Library in 1977; a second copy found in Florence in 1986 and a third exemplar only very recently found in the New York Public Library. Here the reproductions of the 43 etchings for the Polybius have been accompanied by 42 etchings which Palladio dedicated to Caesar's deeds. This offers us a complete picture of his effort to reconstruct those excellent features of ancient warfare on which Palladio wished to base his own proposals for reforming the contemporary Venetian militia, as well as to give a different point of view on the history of architecture. Book excerpt: This book considers the production of collective identity in Venice (Christian, civic-minded, anti-tyrannical), which turned on distinctions drawn in various fields of representation from painting, sculpture, print, and performance to classified correspondence. Dismemberment and decapitation bore a heavy burden in this regard, given as indices of an arbitrary violence ascribed to Venice’s long-time adversary, “the infidel Turk.” The book also addresses the recuperation of violence in Venetian discourse about maintaining civic order and waging crusade. Finally, it examines mobile populations operating in the porous limits between Venetian Dalmatia and Ottoman Bosnia and the distinctions they disrupted between “Venetian” and “Turk” until their settlement on farmland of the Venetian state. This occurred in the eighteenth century with the closing of the borderlands, thresholds of difference against which early modern “Venetian-ness” was repeatedly measured and affirmed.

Book excerpt: Under Two Lions deals with the relationship which existed in the field of culture between Persia and the Republic of Venice in a key period of their history, the years 1450-1797, when both the Republic and Persia found themselves confronted with modernity. The Republic gradually lost its status as a great European power and eventually ceased to exist altogether during the wars that followed the French Revolution. Persia went through a long period of deep and often bloody political, social and religious transformations, but it was still strong enough by the beginning of the 19th century to preserve its political independence in the face of European colonial expansion. The only book-length essay on Persian-Venetian relations dates back to 1865 and deals mostly with diplomacy and trade: Under Two Lions thus fills a gap in the study of the relations between Europe and the Islamic world in the early modern period. Under Two Lions looks at these relations from an Iranological point of view and puts previous scholarship on this subject into a coherent framework, at the same time adding new findings and a new perspective: the result is a new account of Persian-Venetian relations. Under Two Lions pays particular attention to one vital aspect of these relations, that is, the way the Venetians obtained their information about Persia and the Persians: traders played a major role in the acquisition of this information and therefore play a major role in this book as well. Investigating these merchants, who were not only Italian but also Persian and Armenian, has very important implications for the social and economic history of both countries and, given the fact that the Persian sources do not cover the life and the activities of these merchants (neither the Venetians in Persia nor the Persians in Venice), the Venetian sources acquire special importance. The book shows clearly that the Venetians were perfectly capable of obtaining a good knowledge of Persia but also had only limited interest in sharing their information on this or other subjects with other Europeans, who were after all the subjects of rival political and economic powers. Of particular note among the different subjects dealt with in Under Two Lions is the question of the Venetian contribution to the "discovery" of Persia and to early Orientalism. At the same time, Under Two Lions shows the potential results that can be achieved through an interdisciplinary approach to the subject and is the indispensable starting point for further research.
