Estimava l'autore che i demoni, per le parole di Virgilio, dovessono liberamente dar loro l'entrata, si come gli aveano i demoni superiori lasciati scendere giù per quelle medesime parole; ma, poi che vide Vir gilio aver parlato invano e senza alcuno efi'etto, quasi come vinto tornare in volta, invili l'autore, temendo non gli convo nisse tornare indietro. E quando il cuore per alcuna passione invilisce, ogni vigore esteriore ricorre a lui, e perciò conviene che quelle cotali parti esteriori rimangano palide; la qual pa lidezza vuole l'autor mostrare qui essere stata cagione di ri strigner dentro il colore acceso, il quale Virgilio oltre all'usato avea nel viso, per la turbazion presa: e questo, accioche il suo sembiante turbato non fosse cagione all'autore di temere più che bisogno non era. E però dice: Più tosto che fatto non avrebbe, dentro da sé, il suo nuovo, cioè nuova mente venuto per la turbazion presa, ristrinse mostrandosi meno turbato che non era. E quinci segue, e discrive un atto di Virgilio, nel quale Virgilio, ancora in conforto dell'autore, si sforza di dimostrare d'aspettare che venga chi 'l faccia venire al di sopra della sua impresa, e dice: Attento si fermò, com'uom ch'ascolta nelle quali parole si può comprendere Virgilio dovere immaginare quivi non dover venire il divino aiuto senza farsi alquanto sentir di lontano; e perciò si mise, oltre a questo, ad ascoltare, per Che l'occhio nol potea menare a lungo discernendo; e di scrive la cagione: Per l'aer nero cioè tenebroso, per lo non esservi alcuna luce, percioché l'aere di sua natura non è d'alcun colore comprensibile dagli occhi nostri, e per la nebbia folta cioè spessa, la qual surgeva del padule.
