The government of Malaysia, in search of Western investment, does its best to perpetuate this view. But this isn't the whole story. Over the last several decades, Joseph Liow shows, Malaysian politics has taken a strong turn toward Islamism. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the growing role of Islam in the last quarter century of Malaysian politics. Conventional wisdom suggest that the ruling UMNO party has moved toward Islamism to fend off challenges from the more heavily Islamist opposition party, PAS. Liow argues, however, that UMNO has often taken the lead in moving toward Islamism, and that in fact PAS has often been forced to react. The result, Liow argues, is a game of "piety-trumping" that will be very difficult to reverse, and that has dire consequences not only for the ethnic and religious minorities of Malaysia, but for their democratic system as a whole.

The protagonists were Ludovico di Varthema from Italy, Vincent le Blanc from France, Joseph Pitts from England, Ali Bey el Abbassi (Domenec Francese Jordi Badia i Leblich) from Spain, John Lewis Burckhardt from Switzerland, and Richard Francis Burton from England. The six men performed their feats in their capacities as adventurers, explorers, soldiers, and spies. One yet was a slave. The visits spanned a period of three and a half centuries, from 1503 as the time of the first visit by Ludovico di Varthema, to 1853 as the time of the visit by Richard Francis Burton. The period covered was perhaps one of the most dramatic periods in the history of the Hijaz region in particular, and also in the history of Islam-West (Orient-Occident) relations, in general. The visits and the travellers' accounts reveal much about challenges faced by Islamic culture and civilization in early modem times. Those challenges pertained to the rise of Western civilization and its imperialistic tendencies, modernization, radical anti-Islamic polemics, the waning of Islamic civilization, and Muslim schism.

Western psychology draws conclusions based on experience and scientific research methods that are necessarily observable through human senses. While Islamic psychology does not limit the source of knowledge through the senses and experience solely. Besides experience and senses as sources of knowledge, Islamic Psychology also makes the holy book al-Quran and Sahih Hadith (corpus of the sayings or traditions of the Prophet Muhammad) as the most important and reliable sources. Al-Quran emphasizes the spiritual elements of the heart, mind, and soul to understand human psychology. On the other hand, in the world of psychology, Freud is so close and synonymous with psychology that it is almost impossible to deny his contribution. While Malik Badri is a prominent figure in Islamic Psychology who first gave consciousness that Islamic psychology and Western psychology have different foundations, dimensions, and directions. In this keynote address, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohamed Hatta Shaharom tried to bridge the clashes between the two. He talked about Freud's views on humans and Malik Badri's criticism of the view. He also explained how the clash of the two can be harmonized and eventually can be used to achieve community well-being. We are very fortunate to have a scholar like Professor Datuk Dr. Mohamed Hatta Shaharom who are able to see both fields in a balanced way and offer a harmonious path so that we can adapt where necessary and respect each other.
