Book Ignorance Myth and Martial Arts

Download or read book Ignorance Myth and Martial Arts written by Wallace Smedley and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the martial arts a person will find outrageous claims, and subtle lies. There are tales of ancient masters who had powers usually reserved for Superman or Santa Clause, but there are also instructors who use misleading marketing tactics to entice students to pay to be safe. Few instructors actually tell students that the best way to be safe is to be nice to people and not act like a raving ding-dong anytime someone rubs you the wrong way. One will also find absurd practices and a near brainwashing process where you surrender your critical thinking in favor of herd mentality. It is easy to not question the instructor, or the proceedures and policies of the class and organization. There is a much more difficult road in questioning, but questions must be asked. Wallace Smedley has trained in the martial arts since the early 1980's. He has traveled the path of esoteric and mystical martial arts, spent a few years wandering the musky halls of a McDojo, and trained in very rough self-defense schools. He uses his experience to give the reader an enjoyable and thought provoking book. Plain hard facts, statistical based points, and stories from his many and varied experiences give the reader much to consider, and re-examine.

Book Hoaxes Myths and Manias

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert E. Bartholomew
  • Publisher : Prometheus Books
  • Release : 2010-11-02
  • ISBN : 1615923381
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book Hoaxes Myths and Manias written by Robert E. Bartholomew and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking is an innate ability that most people take for granted. But like writing well or speaking effectively before the public, thinking well is a skill that can be learned and improved with practice. In this unique introduction to critical thinking, Robert Bartholomew and Benjamin Radford first lay out the principles of critical thinking and then invite readers to put these principles to the test by examining a series of unusual and challenging case studies. Assembling a wide range of bizarre but actual incidents from many cultures and various time periods, they demonstrate how the tools of critical thinking can help to unravel alleged paranormal events and seemingly mysterious behavior. What factors led to the "Martian panic" of 1938? Why did many people conclude that an alien spaceship crashed in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947? How do we explain the panic expressed by otherwise normal Southeast Asian men who came to believe that a contagious disease was causing their genitals to shrink, or the frenzied dance manias that captivated thousands of Europeans during the Middle Ages? Bartholomew and Radford show that reality is very much a social construction, that cultural assumptions play a large part in our judgments about what is normal and what is deviant, and that the use of critical reasoning is our best means of ensuring an objective perspective.

Book Myths and Blind Spots in the Fighting Arts World Part 1

Download or read book Myths and Blind Spots in the Fighting Arts World Part 1 written by Alex Tomaras and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myths and Blind Spots in the Fighting Arts' World #1 Learning to defend yourself through training in martial arts, combatives or combat sports, is a wise thing to do, but being wise while doing it, is not all that easy. While it does depend on you, it firstly depends on your instructors, and even on their instructors... This being the case, human factors like ignorance, arrogance, "indenialism" (I call it), deception, hastiness, idolatry, fanaticism and more, hinder the truth to various degrees from reaching the practitioners, thus compromising their necessary survival fighting skills. For this reason, this book strives to bring clarity and reality where those are absent, to bring balance where there is exaggeration or falsehood; when learning to mentally and physically resist an attacker or attackers, there can't be any room for wrong use of the body's weapons, for naivety, silliness, fantasy or a playful mentality. This in turn means, that in order to protect yourself and loved ones, the theories and training methods you use for that purpose, should be able, must be able, TO BE PROVEN 100% accurate, if ever physically attacked. A large order indeed, a huge responsibility and a moral burden for sincere hard working, dedicated instructors. So, there is knowledge to be gained from this book and wisdom to be discerned. It's therefore a book for free thinkers, for truth lovers, I'd even add, for the brave, but it's definitely not for mere "reactors" that see things through the lens of emotionalism, convenience, self-benefit, immaturity, or inexperience. While it's not a Christian book, I am still a dedicated Christian, so it's still a... Christian's book. I am glad and thankful to God, to be both a Christian and a Christian martial artist; Psalm 144:1-2 is true in my life, just like so many other passages from the Bible. And why is this relevant, you may in all fairness ask. Because my faith and beliefs are apparent here and there in this book and especially in a particular chapter where I elaborate on Christianity's, actually God's perspective on self-defense and violence and this, firstly for my Christian family members and then of course for all other practitioners; they too may gain a lot from that perspective. It's unfortunately true, that it's not a topic that many would expect a Christian to write about, but why not? The answer in essence, in that chapter. Another dimension of this book, is my Christian sense of humor; don't say I didn't warn you! Therefore the full blend you should expect to find in this book is fourfold: fighting arts, wisdom, Christianity and humor. All of those, to hopefully bring necessary change, where it is needed and of course... is still wanted or/and allowed... ―DISCLAIMER: If you are somehow offended by the Gospel of Jesus Christ that calls people to repent and be saved from eternal hell or Christian theology in general, my friendly advice is, do not waste your money and time buying this book. There are good martial art books out there waiting for you, written by atheists, so you can buy theirs and reject this one if you feel you cannot tolerate such beliefs. Thank you for understanding, I appreciate it and no hard feelings.

Book On the Warrior s Path Second Edition

Download or read book On the Warrior s Path Second Edition written by Daniele Bolelli and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining and insightful history of martial arts and the role of the warrior, drawing on pop culture, philosophy, mythology, religion, and spirituality The urge to forge one’s character by fighting, in daily life as well as on the mat, appeals to something deep within us. More than a collection of fighting techniques, martial arts constitute a path to developing body, spirit, and awareness. On the Warrior’s Path connects the martial arts with this larger perspective, merging subtle philosophies with no-holds-barred competition, Nietzsche with Bruce Lee, radical Taoism and Buddhism with the Star Wars Trilogy, traditional martial arts with basketball and American Indian culture. At the center of all these phenomena is the warrior. Though this archetype seems to manifest contradictory values, author Daniele Bolelli describes the heart of this tension: how the training of martial technique leads to a renunciation of violence, and how overcoming fear leads to a unique freedom. Aimed at students at any level or tradition of martial arts but also accessible to the armchair warrior, On the Warrior’s Path brings fresh insights to why martial arts remains an enduring and widespread art and discipline. Two new chapters in this second edition focus on spirituality in the martial arts and the author’s personal journey in the field.

Book Ninja

  • Author : Stephen Turnbull
  • Publisher : Casemate Publishers
  • Release : 2017-11-30
  • ISBN : 1473850436
  • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book Ninja written by Stephen Turnbull and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of the ninja uncovers the truth behind the image—from the exploits of medieval ninjas to their modern incarnation as pop culture icons. The ninja is a legendary figure in Japanese military culture, a fighter widely regarded as the world’s greatest expert in secret warfare. The word alone conjures the image of a masked assassin dressed in black, capable of extraordinary feats of daring; a mercenary who disposes of enemies by sending sharp iron stars spinning towards them. This is, of course, a popular myth, based on exaggerations and Hollywood movies. But the truth, as Stephen Turnbull explains in Ninja, is even more fascinating. A leading expert on samurai culture, Turnbull presents an authoritative study of ninja history based on original Japanese sources, many of which have never been translated before. These include accounts of castle attacks, assassinations and espionage, as well as the last great ninja manual, which reveals the spiritual and religious ideals that were believed to lie behind the ninja’s arts. Turnbull’s critical examination of the ninja phenomenon ranges from undercover operations during the age of Japan’s civil wars to the modern emergence of the superman ninja as a comic book character. The book concludes with a detailed investigation of the ninja in popular culture.

Influenced by works such as Don Juan and the novels of Kafka, these essays begin with a meditation on suicide; the question of living or not living in a universe devoid of order or meaning. With lyric eloquence, Albert Camus brilliantly posits a way out of despair, reaffirming the value of personal existence, and the possibility of life lived with dignity and authenticity.

Book Barefoot Zen

  • Publisher : Weiser Books
  • Release : 2000-11-15
  • ISBN : 9781578631421
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Barefoot Zen written by Nathan J Johnson and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2000-11-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books about Kung Fu or Karate deal with techniques or history. Few examine the underlying purpose of these arts, or approach them as a tool for spiritual, rather than physical, development. Barefoot Zen is a brave new approach to the martial arts, which clearly demonstrates that the traditional movements of both Kung Fu and Karate, contained in the solo choreographed sequences of movements known as forms (or kata), grew out of the spiritual practices of the Shaolin order of Buddhist monks and nuns. Nathan Johnson explains that this mystical and non-violent teaching is a profound and beautiful expression of Chan (Zen) Buddhism and its pur-suit of wisdom, peace, and enlightenment. Contrary to popular assumption, he contends that it was never intended to be an actual means of self-defense. Barefoot Zen bridges the gap between Kung Fu and Karate, and reveals their common origin through the disclosure of vital research material on three of the world's most important Karate kata. Part I explains the spiritual disciplines that contributed to what we know as the martial arts. Part II explains the creation of the art along with practical instruction for performing kata. Part III explains the formation of many of the world's Kung Fu styles. We learn that the original "empty hand art" was used as a method of kinetic meditation between pairs and was designed as a practical tool to assist practitioners in transcending the fear and insecurity of everyday living. Barefoot Zen makes the legacy of the Shaolin way accessible to all, releasing the art from the clutches of popular images and painful concerns about self-defense. The legendary courage of the Shaolin (Chan/Zen) order was not developed by fighting with enemies, but by not fighting! The Shaolin teaching was designed to free us from fear, the only true enemy.
