Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern-day writer and a Harlem Renaissance artist are connected by a painting with a deadly secret in this gripping dual-timeline gothic thriller. Shanice Pierce knows better than to heed bad omens. But she has a hard time ignoring the signs when she finds herself newly single and out of a job on the same seemingly cursed day. Then, while cleaning out her grandmother’s house, Shanice comes across a painting she hasn’t seen in years. Drawn to the haunting portrait in a way she can't explain, Shanice accepts her grandmother’s offer to keep the family heirloom. She soon uncovers the story of the artist, a Harlem Renaissance painter named Estelle Johnson. The young woman was taken under wing by the wealthy art patron Maude Bachmann—or “Godmother” as she insisted her artists call her—and vanished shortly after Bachmann’s brutal murder a century ago. As Shanice digs deeper, a paranoia that’s haunted her for years returns. She becomes convinced she’s being stalked, and that the deaths happening around her are connected to the staggering offer she turned down for the painting. But the truth hiding in plain sight is even more shocking—and deadly—than Shanice could possibly have imagined . . .
Download or read book Godmother Night written by Rachel Pollack and published by Gateway. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost a set of short stories, this novel breaks into discrete episodes, centered on identity, love, and death. Jaqe has no identity until she meets Laurie, introduced and named by Mother Night; in that moment, she knows herself, and that she loves Laurie. But once Mother Night has become part of their lives, Laurie and Jaqe and their daughter Kate cannot live as other people do. Knowing Death, inevitably each of them seeks to use the knowledge, to bargain with Death, and to change the terms in the balance of life and death in the world. Pollack's characters, major and supporting, living, dead, and divine, are memorably human. As she transplants myths and folklore into a modern setting, she gives new life to old tales and a deeper meaning to a seemingly simple world. Winner of the World Fantasy Award for best novel, 1997

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the winter of 1984, Sharon Nicorvo was violently raped while delivering pizza to the barracks at Fort Monmouth Army Base in New Jersey. At that time her seven-year-old son Jay was being subjected to repeated and secret sexual abuse by his babysitter. Best Copy Available delves into these devastating events and their aftermath. Thirty years later, Nicorvo received a photocopy of the criminal investigation report generated from that brutal night, which offers a primer to better understand certain assumptions. About class and race. Sex and violence. Crime and punishment. Low and high culture. Sanity, madness, and masculinity. And the facsimile nature of the truth. As various American men-some real, some imagined, all prone to violence-move in and then out of their hardscrabble lives, mother and son spend decades avoiding and ultimately confronting what happened to them in that formative year. From the Jersey Shore to the Gulf Coast of Florida to the Midwest, Best Copy Available tells a harrowing and sometimes hilarious American story of how the love of a single mother helped end an awful cycle of abuse and abandonment. Most ambitiously, Best Copy Available lends voice to an alternative version of American boyhood, manhood, and fatherhood. One where the sons of deadbeat dads can grow up to be stay-at-home dads, and where our boys and men may realize that the most courageous show of strength is not the determined use of force. It's knowing when and how to ask for help"--

Download or read book Bestsong written by Scott Perry and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was around 1980 or 1982 that I had a dream or night vision of my standing in the pulpit of the Primitive Baptist Church of Gifford, Florida. In this dream or night vision, I was holding a book in my right hand. The title on the cover page of this book was "Bestsong." The next day, I shared this dream with my wife Helen and said to her, "I got to write a book." A few years later, my wife and I were walking through a parking lot in Fort Pierce, Florida, around two o'clock in the afternoon. A doctor friend of mine and a prophet I had never met was introduced to my wife and me. In shaking my hand, he said to me, "I am a prophet of God, and God said or says to you write that book." My wife Helen laughed and said, "I think you better start writing that book, bud." About two or three weeks later, I had another dream or night vision. In this one, I was standing and looking in front of a jukebox, looking down at a turning or spinning black record. It had the face of a hideous, giggling man in it. As this record played, rays were shooting out from this record. These rays would strike the young listeners in the head. I noticed that as these rays struck the heads of these young people, they would stiffen like they had become zombies. They would walk away from the jukebox and straightaway, go out and perform those evils they had heard coming from these records and the jukebox. A "Bestsong" can be God-inspired or Demon-inspired. A "Bestsong" can be the Almighty God from Heaven, or it can be to the god of this world, Satan. This book is a revelation from God our Father and the Lord, Jesus Christ, our soon-coming King. The ultimate goal of this book is to glorify God and to make one wise unto salvation. Read and be blessed.
