  • Author : Jacki Tapley
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2020-07-01
  • ISBN : 3030422887
  • Pages : 410 pages

Download or read book Victimology written by Jacki Tapley and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores what victimology, as both an academic discipline and an activist movement, has achieved since its initial conception in the 1940s, from a variety of experts’ perspectives. Focussing on nine, dynamic and contemporary case studies covering topics like violence against women and girls, bereaved family activism, and environmental victims and climate change activists, each chapter critically examines how different crime victims have been politicised and explores the impact of victim-centred reforms upon criminal justice professional cultures. This book comprehensively and critically examines the historical, social and political factors, including the work of activists, that have shaped the development of theories, policies and reforms in this field, including how victimhood has come to be understood and responded to. The chapters also consider the future developments of this area, including how digital technologies are creating new forms and experiences of victimisation. Speaking to undergraduates, postgraduates and professionals in criminal justice and third sector organisations, this book discusses the links between theory, policy and professional practice and how they contribute to and facilitate debates regarding what the role of crime victims is in a 21st century criminal justice system.

Book Emotional Labour in Criminal Justice and Criminology

Download or read book Emotional Labour in Criminal Justice and Criminology written by Jake Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first volume to explore criminal justice work and criminological research through the lens of emotional labour. A concept first coined 30 years ago, emotional labour seeks to explore the ways in which people manage their emotions in order to achieve the aims of their organisations, and the subsequent impact of this is on workers and service users. The chapters in this edited collection explore work in a wide range of criminal justice institutions as well as the penal voluntary sector. In addition to literature review chapters which consolidate what we already know, this book includes case study chapters which extend our knowledge of how emotional labour is performed in specific contexts, and in relation to certain types of work. Emotional Labour in Criminal Justice and Criminology covers topics such as prisoners who die from natural causes in prison, to the work of independent domestic violence advisors and the use of emotion by death penalty lawyers in the US. An accessible and compelling read, this book presents ground-breaking qualitative and quantitative research which will be critical to criminologists, criminal justice practitioners, students of criminology and academics in the fields of social policy and public service.

Book Blackstone s Handbook for Policing Students 2013

Download or read book Blackstone s Handbook for Policing Students 2013 written by Sofia Graça and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 1000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blackstone's Handbook for Policing Students 2013 has been developed from the best-selling Blackstone's Student Police Officer Handbook to reflect the multitude of avenues into the police force now open to future police officers, from pre-entry courses to PCSOs and Specials. Designed specifically to meet the new requirements of police training, this book is a must-have for those embarking on a career in the police. Parts of initial police training common to all new entrants are easily identified and there are specific chapters on qualification structures and training and assessment, meeting the needs of students whether you are entering policing through pre-entry schemes or through an alternative qualification route. This new structure means it is possible for students to omit certain Parts of the Handbook whilst still meeting the mandatory requirements of the revised IPLDP Diploma in Policing. Divided into six parts, representing key stages in your progression from pre-entry programmes (where appropriate) in Parts 1 and 2, to initial training and then confirmation, the Handbook leads you through the topics, covering theory, discussion and practice while developing skills of analysis, problem solving and forms of reasoning. Coupled with a comprehensive and accessible style, the book ensures you have the knowledge and understanding necessary to undertake independent patrol in a professional and competent manner. Key topics covered include Stop, Search, and Entry; Alcohol and Drug Offences; Sexual Offences; Interviewing; and Intelligence. Blackstone's Handbook for Policing Students 2013 is essential reading whether you are taking a pre-entry course or the IPLDP Diploma in Policing, looking to move on from your role as a PCSO or Special, or are involved within the security and law enforcement sector.

Book Draft Sentencing Guidelines

  • Publisher : The Stationery Office
  • Release : 2006-06-28
  • ISBN : 9780215029409
  • Pages : 48 pages

Download or read book Draft Sentencing Guidelines written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Home Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-06-28 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic violence is a social problem of enormous proportion. In 2000 there were an estimated 12.9 million incidents, and 1.2 million women were affected by stalking. It accounts for a quarter of all violent crime. Victims and children suffer with physical and psychological abuse. The costs to society are high, recently estimated as amounting to £3.1 billion for services for survivors: including absence from employment, medical, psychiatric and addiction treatment, housing and other social and legal assistance. The loss to the economy has been estimated at £2.7 billion per year. Two draft guidelines on domestic violence were published by the Sentencing Guidelines Council on 11 April 2006. Overarching Principles: Domestic Violence deals with the general principles. There is no specific offence of domestic violence, and conduct amounting to domestic violence can be covered by a wide range of offences: not only assaults, but criminal damage, harassment, threats to injure or kill, false imprisonment, and sexual offences. The guidelines define domestic violence, and discuss assessing seriousness, aggravating and mitigating factors, and the wishes and interests of victims and children. Breach of a Protective Order, the second draft guideline, addresses breaches of restraining or non-molestation orders imposed in order to prevent harassment or fear of violence, or the molestation of others. The Committee endorses the general approach in these guidelines, particularly the explicit recognition that courts should treat domestic violence no less seriously than other cases of violent crime. The Committee makes a number of recommendations for amendments to the guidelines.

Book Women and the Criminal Justice System

Download or read book Women and the Criminal Justice System written by Emma Milne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together academics and professionals, this edited collection considers key issues in current criminal justice policy and practice related specifically to women to answer the important question: are women being failed by the criminal justice system? In a landscape where women’s involvement in the criminal justice system still tends to be ignored or lost in discussions about men, contributors place special emphasis on women as both victims and offenders. The chapters cover a wide range of topics relating to women and crime, including: violent and sexual victimisation, violent offending, sentencing and punishment, and rape myths. Since the peak of feminist criminal justice scholarship in the 1990s, the place of women in the criminal justice system has arguably slipped down the agenda and the authors of this collection draw on original research to make the compelling case for a swift remedy to this. Drawing on recent academic studies and professional experience to set an agenda for future research – as well as legal and policy reform – this book injects new life into the dialogue surrounding women and the criminal justice system. Innovative and timely, this collection of essays holds broad appeal to academics and practitioners, as well as students of criminology, criminal justice and law, and all those with an interest in feminism, justice, and inequality.
