Book excerpt: The television programme American Idol provides a stage where the politics of national, regional, ethnic, and religious identity are performed for millions of viewers. Meizel demonstrates that commercial music and the music industry are not simply forces to be criticised or resisted, but critical sites for redefining American culture.
Download or read book Tales of Idolized Boys written by Sachi Schmidt-Hori and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In medieval Japan (14th–16th centuries), it was customary for elite families to entrust their young sons to the care of renowned Buddhist priests from whom they received a premier education in Buddhist scriptures, poetry, music, and dance. When the boys reached adolescence, some underwent coming-of-age rites, others entered the priesthood, and several extended their education, becoming chigo, or Buddhist acolytes. Chigo served their masters as personal attendants and as sexual partners. During religious ceremonies—adorned in colorful robes, their faces made up and hair styled in long ponytails—they entertained local donors and pilgrims with music and dance. Stories of acolytes (chigo monogatari) from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries form the basis of the present volume, an original and detailed literary analysis of six tales coupled with a thorough examination of the sociopolitical, religious, and cultural matrices that produced these texts. Sachi Schmidt-Hori begins by delineating various dimensions of chigo (the chigo “title,” personal names, gender, sexuality, class, politics, and religiosity) to show the complexity of this cultural construct—the chigo as a triply liminal figure who is neither male nor female, child nor adult, human nor deity. A modern reception history of chigo monogatari follows, revealing, not surprisingly, that the tales have often been interpreted through cultural paradigms rooted in historical moments and worldviews far removed from the original. From the 1950s to 1980s, research on chigo was hindered by widespread homophobic prejudice. More recently, aversion to the age gap in historical master-acolyte relations has prevented scholars from analyzing the religious and political messages underlying the genre. Schmidt-Hori’s work calls for a shift in the hermeneutic strategies applied to chigo and chigo monogatari and puts forth both a nuanced historicization of social constructs such as gender, sexuality, age, and agency, and a mode of reading propelled by curiosity and introspection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We were created in the image of our Creator! It was a perfect and loving relationship, but when Adam and Eve chose evil over that relationship with their Creator, that image of God we were created with was lost to us.In our world today, many Christians are more attuned to the world than to God's Word. Many seem to have the attitude that because they are in the world, they must be like the world. But this world is not anything like God, and Christians need to come to the certain knowledge that they are in the world, but not of the world. We as God's kids are not to live in the image of a lost world careening into a dark and bottomless pit of pure evil.Jesus Christ became our atoning sacrifice so that you and I can return to that original image of God that we were created to be. This ought to be our goal in life: to be like God, to do our very best to live in the image of God.This book is a daily devotional of biblical attitudes, characteristics of Jesus Christ, the deep meaning and example of God's amazing precepts and loving actions.God gave us a book to show us His right and loving law, but when Jesus came, He condensed all of the Father's law into just two:Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 22:37-40)It is my sincere hope that this book of devotions will help all who read it to know God better, to love Him more, and to understand what the true image of God means.451

Download or read book The Wingmen written by Adam Lazarus and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of the unique fifty-year friendship between two American icons: John Glenn, the unassailable pioneer of space exploration and Ted Williams, indisputably the greatest hitter in baseball history. It was 1953, the Korean War in full throttle, when two men—already experts in their fields—crossed the fabled 38th Parallel into Communist airspace aboard matching Panther jets. John Glenn was an ambitious operations officer with fifty-nine World War II combat missions under his belt. His wingman was Ted Williams, the two-time American League Triple Crown winner who, at the pinnacle of his career, was inexplicably recalled to active service in the United States Marine Corps. Together, the affable flier and the notoriously tempestuous left fielder soared into North Korea, creating a death-defying bond. Although, over the next half century, their contrasting lives were challenged by exhilarating highs and devastating lows, that bond would endure. Through unpublished letters, unit diaries, declassified military records, manuscripts, and new and illuminating interviews, The Wingmen reveals an epic and intimate portrait of two heroes—larger-than-life and yet ineffably human, ordinary men who accomplished the extraordinary. At its heart, this was a conflicted friendship that found commonality in mutual respect—throughout the perils of war, sports dominance, scientific innovation, cutthroat national politics, the burden of celebrity, and the meaning of bravery. Now, author Adam Lazaraus sheds light on a largely forgotten chapter in these legends’ lives—as singular individuals, inspiring patriots, and eventually, however improbable, profoundly close friends.
