Book Constructing Europe s Identity

Download or read book Constructing Europe s Identity written by Lars-Erik Cederman and published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors assess not only the benefits, but also the costs of attempts to assert a European identity. Referring to debates about the respective merits of deepening and widening, they address the equally important associated tradeoffs between exclusion and dilution: they point to the risks on the one hand of a Europe that excludes foreign goods, immigrants and entire countries, and on the other of an unfocused definition of Europe that may dilute the very values that a "European identity" is intended to protect.

Book Rethinking In Security in the European Union

Download or read book Rethinking In Security in the European Union written by Claudia Anamaria Iov and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a series of studies devoted to assessing the consequences of migration from the perspective of the migration-identity-(in)security causality, with a specific focus on the Roma issue in France. It demonstrates that, in the context of the new European agenda on security, following the events of 9/11, immigrants, in general and the Roma, in particular, have found themselves trapped in a spiral of insecurity through which migration has been raised to the level of ‘meta-problem’ and they have become scapegoats. The book argues that these issues reflect a broader political discussion on the EU’s identity and social policy. It shows that the socio-economic and security dimension of the ‘Roma dossier’ is a case that may require policymakers in Brussels to rethink the EU’s social responsibilities towards its citizens, thus giving up their ambiguous attitude regarding migration.

Book The Politics of Insecurity

Download or read book The Politics of Insecurity written by Jef Huysmans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The act of violence of 9/11 changed the global security agenda, catapulting terrorism to the top of the agenda. Weapons of mass destruction grabbed public interest and controlling the free movement of people became a national security priority. In this volume, Jef Huysmans critically engages with theoretical developments in international relations and security studies to develop a conceptual framework for studying security. He argues that security policies and responses do not appear out of the blue, but are part of a continuous and gradual process, pre-structured by previous developments. He examines this process of securitization and explores how an issue, on the basis of the distribution and administration of fear, becomes a security policy. Huysmans then applies this theory to provide a detailed analysis of migration, asylum and refuge in the European Union. This theoretically sophisticated, yet accessible volume, makes an important contribution to the study of security, migration and European politics.

Book The Union and the World The Political Economy of a Common European Foreign Policy

Download or read book The Union and the World The Political Economy of a Common European Foreign Policy written by Alan Cafruny and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade Europe has been transformed both politically and commercially. The establishment of a genuinely single marketplace in the context of an expanding membership has enabled the European Union greatly to enhance its role on the world stage. In the areas of trade and commercial policy the Union increasingly speaks with one voice. As a result of the Maastricht Treaty on Economic and Political Union of 1993, a process has been set in motion whereby the embryonic mechanisms of a common foreign policy (European Political Cooperation or EPC) are gradually evolving into a more comprehensive Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). The contributors to this volume describe and evaluate the nature and extent to which the European Union plays an independent role in international affairs. This pioneering work makes an important contribution to the literature on the European Union since the chapters present a comprehensive picture of the Union's foreign economic policies and actions, its foreign security policy, and the supranational nature of much Union decision-making. The book is significant, not only because of its dual focus on economics as well as politics, but also because it comprehensively covers the broad range of Union policies in both the economic and political spheres. The intended level of readership is undergraduate courses on the EU and on European politics; upper level undergraduate courses in International Relations; and graduate survey courses on the EU. The book is sufficiently comprehensive and instructive to achieve a wide readership, especially in North America and the UK.

Book Security Insecurity and Migration in Europe

Download or read book Security Insecurity and Migration in Europe written by Gabriella Lazaridis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having often been framed in terms of security concerns, migration issues have simultaneously given rise to issues of insecurity: on the one hand, security of borders, political, societal and economic security/insecurity in the host country; on the other, social, legal and economic concerns about human security, with regard to both EU citizens and migrants entering Europe. In terms of state security, migration is a core target of increasingly globally networked surveillance capabilities, whilst with respect to human security, it exposes the gap between the protections that migrants formally enjoy under international law and the realities they experience as they travel and work across different countries. Drawing on the latest research from across the EU, Security, Insecurity and Migration explores the concerns of states with regard to migration and the need to protect the fundamental rights of migrants. An interdisciplinary examination of the issues of security and insecurity raised by migration for states, their citizens and migrants themselves, this book will be of interest to scholars of politics, sociology and geography researching migration, race and ethnicity, human and state security and EU politics and policy.

Book Security Studies

Download or read book Security Studies written by Arda Özkan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an important aspect of human polity, the concept of security has an important place and space in politics. Though regularly mentioned or referred, the concept is rarely given a proper definition, usually left in the shadows of politics and policymaking and usually referred as a cause to an effect. Within the framework of this book, classic, modern and post-modern security issues are analyzed, while also focusing on the classical and diverse conceptual dimensions of security, current problems are also evaluated, especially in the axis of post-modern security studies. In security studies, a distinction is usually made between classical and post-modern approaches, but in this study, both are considered together. One of the important features of this work is that it offers a perspective from Turkish experts on the concept of security in international relations.

Book Identity and Integration in Europe

Download or read book Identity and Integration in Europe written by Yvonne Hapke and published by Akademische Verlagsgemeinschaft München. This book was released on 2009-09-07 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assumptions of politicians, teachers, and other professionals about integration often fall short of theoretical and empirical support. This work seeks to bridge this gap by proposing a new theoretical concept looking at personal security and testing it empirically with data from 21 European countries. As migration often affects migrants and members of the receiving society alike both have been included in the analysis. Whereas classic identity research strongly relies on qualitative techniques and experimental designs, Yvonne Hapke adopts a quantitative approach. She successfully demonstrates that ethnic closure and xenophobia are the result of damaged or threatened identities and pose a major obstacle to integration. However, welcoming individuals with all of their defining characteristics, needs, and identities helps people to develop trust in others as well as in political institutions and makes them more confident about their country's future.

Book New Security Challenges in Postcommunist Europe

Download or read book New Security Challenges in Postcommunist Europe written by Andrew Cottey and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cubism was the most influential artistic movement that emerged in the twentieth century. The hallmarks of its style were stamped on the art, design and architecture and its aesthetic principles governed the representation of modernity across all the arts. Yet just what cubism was, or stood for, at the time of its emergence is still in dispute, while the explanations offered for its importance for twentieth-century art, and its legacy for the present, are bewildering in their variety. This fascinating book offers a way beyond this confusion: a narrative of its beginnings, consolidation and dissemination that takes into account not only what the style and the movement signified at the time of its emergence but also the principal writings through which cubism's significance for modernism has been established. Visually stunning with over 100 illustrations, this is an essential work for all students and teachers of modern art history.

Book excerpt: Sets out a comprehensive framework of analysis for security studies, examining the distinctive character and dynamics of security in five sectors: military, political, economic, environmental, and societal. It rejects traditionalists' case for restricting security in one sector, arguing that security is a particular type of politics applicable to a wide range of issues, and offers a constructivist operational method for distinguishing the process of securitization from that of politicization. Download or read book New Wars written by Scott Nicholas Romaniuk and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Al Qaeda's deadly assaults against the American homeland on September 11, 2001 deeply altered regional security architectures the world over. Religious extremists responsible for having coordinated and implemented the 9/11 attacks have brought state and non-state actors to radically reconsider traditional concepts of security, including responses and the need for tactical and strategic preemption in the face of growing conventional and asymmetric threats to communities at home and abroad. Drawing upon critical new research, the analyses presented by the contributors of this volume challenge and even shatter previously held ideas about domestic and international terrorism and state-sanctioned violence. They shed light upon new conceptions of security as well as the need for actors to address existing and emerging cultures of fear and critical susceptibilities in the face of wanton violence and security of the state in the 21st century.
