However, even before persecution exposes their new faith, many initial believers give up seeking the new truth and return to their previous phase due to a serious identity crisis. This phenomenon is found to occur particularly often among female BMBs because of their unique circumstances in the religious and sociocultural contexts of Jordan. Through an examination of BMB women's narratives, this book explores how Muslim women form their identities and what they experience in the process of conversion.

In this paper I will focus on the following questions: What is the link between Islam and identity? What exactly is a Muslim Identity? As Muslims are coming from different countries, ethnics and different groups (Sunnis, Shiites and so on) can we talk about Muslims as a collective group or is there a Global Muslim Identity? And when how is this type of identity created?

Yet both have been at the forefront of modernization and development, and are exposed to a rising trend of Islamic revival which discloses a deep, psychological identity crisis. In Islamic Identity and Development, Ozay Mehmet examines this identity crisis in the wider context of the Islamic dilemma of reconciling nationalism with Islam. He sees the Islamic revival primarily as a protest movement, concentrated among urban migrant settlements where uneven post-war growth has upset the traditional Islamic order. He argues that Islamic societies must move towards greater openness and an organic relationship between rulers and ruled. In particular, Mehmet suggests the need for a public policy that is not only responsive to material human needs but which also satisfies the ethical preconditions of the Islamic social contract.

Book excerpt: Popular media accounts of the experiences of American Muslims have characterized this population as fraught by conflicting allegiances to both country and religion (Woodruff 2006; Fisher 2011). Academics write about the distress particular to American Muslims as a result of their “identity crisis” (Peek 2005) and “hyphenated identities” (Sirin and Fine 2007). Much of the research on American Muslims has been predicated upon the taken for granted assumption that they are conflicted individuals; research methods and data gathered are therefore reflective of that assumption. This study questions the appropriateness of viewing American Muslims as holders of what I term fundamentally conflicted identities, as doing so engenders a gross mischaracterization that may produce erroneous theoretical assumptions and taint research validity. Through the use of in-depth interview data, I demonstrate a more authentic image of American Muslims, one that better reflects their lived experiences and personal identities.
