Book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control

Download or read book Aviation Safety and Pilot Control written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adverse aircraft-pilot coupling (APC) events include a broad set of undesirable and sometimes hazardous phenomena that originate in anomalous interactions between pilots and aircraft. As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. It was written for technical, government, and administrative decisionmakers and their technical and administrative support staffs; key technical managers in the aircraft manufacturing and operational industries; stability and control engineers; aircraft flight control system designers; research specialists in flight control, flying qualities, human factors; and technically knowledgeable lay readers.

Book Analysis of a Coupled Roll spiral mode Pilot induced Oscillation Experienced with the M2 F2 Lifting Body

Download or read book Analysis of a Coupled Roll spiral mode Pilot induced Oscillation Experienced with the M2 F2 Lifting Body written by Robert W. Kempel and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 16 glide flights of the M2 -F2 lifting body vehicle, severe lateral pilot-induced oscillations occurred on three occasions in the low - angle of -attack, final-approach, preflare situation. These oscillations were analyzed qualitatively to determine the type and similarity and by a systems analysis to determine the root cause. The analysis was complemented by a piloted simulator study, which verified the results. The systems analysis revealed the presence of a coupled roll-spiral mode which caused the pilots to generate a closed-loop lateral instability in the low-angle -of -attack, preflare flight region. A systems analysis, a piloted simulator study, and flight data showed that the addition of a fixed center fin lessened the pilot-induced-oscillation tendencies in the critical flight region.

Book Flight Test Evaluation of Techniques to Predict Longitudinal Pilot Induced Oscillations

Download or read book Flight Test Evaluation of Techniques to Predict Longitudinal Pilot Induced Oscillations written by Eileen A. Bjorkman and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if pilot induced oscillations (PIOs) can be predicted prior to flight using existing PIO prediction techniques. Two techniques to predict longitudinal PIO tendencies (Ralph Smith's theory and Roger Hoh's bandwidth method) were studied analytically using an existing PIO data base. Suggestions were made for both techniques to allow prediction of PIO rating. The two techniques were then applied to 18 aircraft/flight control system landing configuration. The 18 configurations were flight tested using a flared landing task with the USAF/Calspan variable stability NT-33A. Smith's theory correctly prediction the PIO tendencies and frequencies provided the configuration was not sensitive to the pilot model used. A suggested modification to Smith's theory correctly predicted PIO ratings within an average of 0.6 rating. A suggested modification to Hoh's bandwidth method predicted PIO ratings within an average of 0.5 rating. The limited data base was too small to draw any definite conclusions. Recommendations for further study included collecting more PIO data and using existing data bases and simulator studies to better define the two techniques and to gain physical insights into PIO mechanization. A wide range of theories and methodologies are currently being investigated and developed in this area to tackle various complex and challenging problems. Accordingly, CPSs represent a scientific and engineering discipline that is set to make an impact on future systems of industrial and social scale that are characterized by the deep integration of real-time processing, sensing, and actuation into logical and physical heterogeneous domains. The CPS&C'2019 brought together researchers and practitioners from all over the world and to discuss cross-cutting fundamental scientific and engineering principles that underline the integration of cyber and physical elements across all application fields. The participants represented research institutions and universities from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Syria, Ukraine, the USA, and Vietnam. These proceedings include 75 papers arranged into five sections, namely keynote papers, fundamentals, applications, technologies, and education and social aspects.

Book An Investigation Relating Longitudinal Pilot Induced Oscillation Tendency Rating to Describing Function Predictions for Rate Limited Actuators

Download or read book An Investigation Relating Longitudinal Pilot Induced Oscillation Tendency Rating to Describing Function Predictions for Rate Limited Actuators written by Joel B. Witte and published by . This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate pilot-induced oscillations (PIO) and determine a method by which PIO tendency rating could be predicted. In particular, longitudinal PIO in the presence of rate-limited actuators were singled out for examination. Sinusoidal input/triangular output describing function techniques using Nichols charts were used. A new criterion dubbed Gap Criterion was calculated for PIO sensitivity. This criterion consists of the product of pilot gain necessary to cause PIO and the normalized maximum amplitude of the commanded actuator. These results were paired with simulator and flight test PIO tendency rating data. The PIO rating scale used was the PIO tendency classification of MIL-HDBK-1797. This concept was applied to two historical test databases, HAVE PREVENT and HAVE OLOP. Additional PIO data was gathered in the Large Amplitude Multimode Aerospace Simulator (LAMARS) at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio and the USAF NF-16D Variable In-flight Stability Test Aircraft (VISTA) at Edwards AFB, California. Correlation between PIO tendency rating and Gap Criterion was determined for each dataset. Most datasets exceeded a confidence level of 95% that a correlation existed. Follow-on analysis for best curve fit was also accomplished with a logarithmic fit deemed best. Datasets were combined with success to demonstrate the universality of Gap Criterion for correlating PIO tendency ratings for longitudinal PIO involving rate-limited actuators.

Book Unified Pilot Induced Oscillation Theory Volume 3 PIO Analysis Using Multivariable Methods

Download or read book Unified Pilot Induced Oscillation Theory Volume 3 PIO Analysis Using Multivariable Methods written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was conducted as part of a USAF initiative to develop a comprehensive theory to predict pilot-induced oscillation (PIO) tendencies due to the combined effect of all influencing elements. A PIO is a very complicated phenomenon stemming from a dynamic interaction between the pilot and the aircraft. When tight control is required of the pilot, an undesired oscillation can result. However, the adaptive nature of the human pilot makes such oscillations difficult to predict. This report describes an analysis method capable of predicting PIO tendencies due to several simultaneous dynamic factors. A unified approach involving pilot modeling, stability robustness analysis, and multivariable describing function analysis is applied to the problem of identifying aircraft with PIO tendencies. The approach is shown to have ties to existing PIO criteria and is successfully applied to the prediction of PIO tendencies of the M2-F2 lifting body.

Book Notes on Lateral Directional Pilot Induced Oscillations

Download or read book Notes on Lateral Directional Pilot Induced Oscillations written by Ralph H. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is developed for the assessment of lateral-directional pilot induced oscillation (PIO) tendencies. The method is applicable regardless of the flight control system mechanization. The relations between linear and non-linear system effects on the probability or nature of PIO are discussed. In its simplest form, the method proposed for PIO assessment is very similar to methods currently in use. The principal difference is that quantitative methods are provided for the identification of specific frequencies at which appropriate stability criteria must be satisfied if PIO is not to be a possibility. Based upon analyses in this report, the single axis, bank angle PIO is believed to be the most commonly encountered lateral-directional PIO. The possibility for pitch only PIO in the longitudinal mode is discussed. The methods of this report are believed to apply to the study of longitudinal PIO. (Author).

Book Suppression of Pilot Induced Oscillation PIO

Download or read book Suppression of Pilot Induced Oscillation PIO written by Donald A. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2002-03-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Closed loop instability caused by excess phase lag induced by actuator rate limiting has been suspected in many pilot-induced oscillations (PIOs) and oscillatory departures from controlled flight. As part of the joint AFIT/TPS program, a longitudinal pilot command notch filter activated by a real- time oscillation verifier (ROVER) algorithm was developed to eliminate the PIO source for any developing, severe PIO. Closed loop computer simulations were conducted to prepare for the flight test. The HAVE ROVER flight test project was flown using the NF-16D Variable Stability In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA). A programmable heads-up display (HUD) was used to generate a tracking task simulating Category A fighter maneuvers. 6 of the 12 evaluation sorties were flown against an airborne target aircraft. Flight test results showed the stick filter was pivotal in preventing aircraft oscillatory departures and suppressing PIOs. With the original threshold settings, the ROVER algorithm correctly characterized pilot observations of the aircraft motion 72% of the time. Further analysis indicated that a high false detection rate was responsible for this relatively low correct detection rate. These results suggested that the threshold values used by ROVER to detect PIO were set too low. By varying the threshold values as part of a parametric study, a maximum overall correct detection rate of 82% was attained.
