Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify leadership styles that community college leaders have used to influence the willingness of community college faculty to teach online courses. The data collected confirmed that faculty resisted teaching online because of five major reasons: The comfort of using technology as part of their content delivery; the age of the faculty member; many faculty question the quality of online courses and the ability to teach effectively certain courses online; and the time needed to develop and facilitate properly an online course. This study found that administrators of community colleges who were interviewed for this study relied primarily on transformational and situational leadership models. In terms of overcoming faculty resistance they relied on six key strategies for overcoming this resistance: intrinsic and extrinsic incentives; peer to peer influence, release time, responding to student needs; assuring high quality online course and offering technology skills. Out of these six, peer influence was seen as the most influential. More importantly these administrators acknowledged that it is the way in which an administrator influences faculty to teach online that determines the success of a faculty member's efforts for this delivery format. Predominantly, these administrators noted that enticing faculty in the water a little at a time was extremely important for their acceptance and willingness to teach online. Beyond this effective strategy, administrators noted that it is important to reach buy-in for online learning within a small, respected group of faculty first and then let them disseminate the importance and approval of teaching online.

Book excerpt: This foundational descriptive quantitative study examined leadership styles, traits of distance education leaders (e.g. VPs, Deans, Directors and Coordinators) and distance education program characteristics as well as funding priorities at the post-secondary level. Participants were subjected to Bass and Avolio's Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5X), which identified leadership characteristics as transformational, transactional or passive-avoidant as manifest by nine scales as follows: Individualized Influence Attributes, Individualized Influence Behavior, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, Individualized Consideration, Contingent Reward, Active Management-by-Exception, Passive Management-by-Exception and Laissez-Faire. In addition, the questionnaire further assessed leadership outcomes scaled as Extra Effort, Effectiveness and Satisfaction. There were 55 respondents from two-year colleges belonging to the American Association of Community Colleges. Findings indicated that these Distance Education Leaders scored markedly higher (and above the norm) in Transformational Leadership style scales than did past MLQ-5X testees from across all fields. Further, results indicated significant relationships between leadership style and such vitally important organizational characteristics as reporting line and levels of position. Additional statistical significance established positive correlates between Age and Effectiveness and a negative correlate between Age and Active Management-by-Exception. The Years Since Most Recent Degree correlated positively with Individualized Influence Behavior and negatively with Active Management-by-Exception. The Years at the Institution and in the Distance Education Field correlated positively with Satisfaction and negatively with Individualized Influence Attributes. The single most important and top ranked funding priority was Course Design Standards that Focus Upon Learning Outcomes. Recommendations were directed at college, distance education leaders and for the purposes of future research. As online distance education in higher education matures, college and distance education leaders should work together to identify and develop future leaders with transformational leadership style to work in the field. This study showed that taking and teaching online courses will have a positive impact upon that goal as well pursuing an advanced degree. Also, the level of position in the organization and reporting line of the distance education leader made a difference in leadership style. Future research should focus upon further defining the best types of leaders for distance education and how to develop effective future leaders in the field.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to explore the leadership of community college department chairs and the job satisfaction of the faculty in community colleges. There appears to be a leadership crisis in higher education that has resulted from the complexity of the leaders' roles. The goal of this study was to investigate the leadership style of the department chairs in one community college and to research the satisfaction levels of the faculty at the community college to determine if indeed the leaders who demonstrate the characteristics of transformational leadership have followers who are more satisfied with their job. Leadership style surveys were distributed to each department chair and each faculty member on the campus and job satisfaction surveys will be distributed to each faculty member. Eight two-tailed, null hypotheses were tested at the .05 level of significance, addressing the eight research questions of the study. The Pearson correlation, two-sample t test, and ANOVA tests were used. There were non-significant correlations and outcomes that suggested directional propensities or tendencies among the variables. Although the literature indicated that higher order leadership skills such as transformational leadership should have been associated with greater job satisfaction among leaders and workers, the findings of this study did not confirm and even implied a possible reversal of the notion that transformational leadership led to greater job satisfaction. The relationship determined between leadership style and effectiveness of department chairs in a community college setting and faculty job satisfaction were an anomaly in this situation when contrasted to previous studies for other types of institutions. Faculty job satisfaction in this instance was not enhanced by department chairs practicing transformational leadership styles in the community college setting.

The retention of faculty and staff of educational institutions has been of vital concern over the last decade, especially since the economic turmoil of 2008 and the aftermath of the great recession. The increase of online degrees has increased the competitiveness of finding, and keeping, qualified and valuable teaching staff. Retention of valuable teaching instructors ñ including adjunct, part-time, associate, and assistant professors is crucial in the survival and growth of academic institutions, as well as maintenance of accreditation credentialing and standards. This book focuses on a correlational research study, based on a faculty population in an institution of higher learning in Florida, that examined the relationship between perceived academic administrator leadership styles and the satisfaction of faculty members and transformational, transactional, and passive/avoidant leadership styles of academic administrators, with a dependent variable of job satisfaction for full-time faculty members. Based on a 95% significance level, the researcher identified a significant relationship between the three leadership styles and the academic instructor's job satisfaction, thus an inferred correlational relationship to staff retention. Using this model, academic leaders are encouraged to refine their leadership styles on the basis of faculty members' indicated preferences to increase and improve academic instructor's retention, as well as their satisfaction in working for the school. Three key recommendations for action were developed. First, senior academic administrators should identify current transformational leaders in their organizations and perhaps use them as mentors to assist in the training and mentorship of current and future leaders. Second, academic administrators should recognize that leadership traits can be learned, and therefore, provide professional development and training opportunities in the areas of transformational leadership for present and future academic leaders. Finally, those who seek leadership positions in academia should become aware of the attributes of an effective higher education administrator, and work to develop an intrinsic understanding of and cultivate a skill-set of transformational leadership characteristics. Thus, understanding the level of job satisfaction and the role of leadership styles thereof can have a lasting impact on the success of students. Book excerpt: This qualitative case study sought to identify how faculty and administrators at a community college were influenced to participate in a professional development discussion group related to culturally responsive teaching and how the groups influenced the views and practices of those who participated. Through analysis of interview data, four major categories were identified: motivation to join the groups, benefits of the culturally responsive teaching discussion groups, definitions of culturally responsive teaching, and the discussion groups' influences on participants' views and practices. Also identified were commonalities shared across these categories. These commonalities are the value and importance of: 1) making connections and collaboration, 2) recognizing backgrounds and prior knowledge, and 3) opportunities for reflection. These findings were also related to the literature on culturally responsive teaching and professional development. The ways participants were motivated to attend the groups, the benefits they found in the groups, their definitions of culturally responsive teaching, and the ways their practices were influenced by the groups relate to principles of culturally responsive teaching as defined in both the literature and by the participants themselves. The findings related to supports and barriers for attending the groups that the participants identified revealed the factors that helped them to participate in the discussion groups or inhibited their participation. These factors were similar to those identified in the professional development literature and helped to inform the implications of the study for the institution, administrators, and faculty.

Community college instructors with previous leader experience possess the credentials needed to teach their curricula and to lead learning experiences in the classroom. Researchers have found that instructors who display transformational leadership qualities can influence student actions, awareness, and learning outcomes. This study was conducted to explore community college faculty who possess transformational leadership qualities in relation to student extra effort, student perception of instructor effectiveness, and overall satisfaction with the instructor. The conceptual framework is the full range leadership theory which is one of the most broadly used comprehensive leadership theories. The measurement tool used was Avolio and Bass's (2004) Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), which measures nine factors of leadership skills through a quantitative survey. These findings present support for the recognition of the value of transformational leadership in the community college environment. Consistent with the findings of this study, transformational leadership has been viewed as the most revered leadership model in the full range leadership theory. Instructors have the ability to integrate critical components of transformational leadership behaviors to impact the student experience in the classroom, resulting in higher levels of student outcomes of extra effort, effectiveness, and satisfaction. The findings add to the body of literature and provide insight into the leadership skills of community college instructors from previous business experience.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the preferred teaching styles of online community college instructors to determine whether the instructors preferred a teacher-centered or a learning-centered teaching style. Moreover, this study investigated the level of commitment online community college instructors exhibited for their preferred teaching styles, in order to discover whether the majority of instructors preferred a teaching-centered or a learning-centered teaching style. Additionally, this study gathered demographic and instructional practices data from a researcher-created questionnaire and analyzed that data for emergent themes as revealed by a survey instrument with field-proven validity and reliability. This study was conducted electronically through an online survey service. The thirty-one online community college instructors who participated in this study were from four community colleges on the East Coast of the United States. This study administered the Principles of Adult Learning Scale (PALS), a survey instrument with proven reliability and validity and the Self-Assessment Professional Profile (SAPP), a researcher-created questionnaire to the thirty-one participating online community college instructors. The research revealed that the majority of the participants had a strong preference for a teacher-centered instructional style, as revealed by their responses to the questions on the PALS; yet these participants considered themselves to be learner-centered instructors, as revealed by their responses to the questions on the SAPP.
