Book Genetic Relationships for Milk and Fat Yields Between Brazilian and United States Holstein Cattle Populations

Download or read book Genetic Relationships for Milk and Fat Yields Between Brazilian and United States Holstein Cattle Populations written by Claudio Napolis Costa and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic relationships between Brazilian and U.S.A. Holstein cattle populations were studies using firstlactation 305-d ME milk and fat records of 29,413 daughters of 705 sires in Brazil and 726,932 daughters of 701 sires in the U.S.A. There were 358 sires with daughter records in both countries. Data sets consisted of all herds and low and high herds stratified by within-year standar deviation for milk (HYSD) computed within counthin country. Components of (co) variance, heritability, and genetic correlations for milk and fat yields were estimated using three data groupings: all, low and high HYDS data sets form within-country and between-country bivariete and multivariate analyses, simutaneous milk and fat yields in both countries. A sire model was solved with a restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) derivative-free algorithm. Heritabilies for milk and fat yields using all the data were smaller in Brazil (.26 and .23) than in the in the U.S.A. (.33 and .36). Genetic correlations between milk and fat were .79 in Brazil and .62 in the U.S.A. Sire and residual variances for milk yield in Brazil were 59% and 81% (all herds), 51% and 58% (low HYSD herds), and 59% and 101% (high HYSD herds) as large as those obtained for all the U.S.A. data. corresponding percentage values for fat yield were 39% and 65%, and 48%, and 41 and 80%, respectively. Genetic correlations obtained from biavariate analyses between countries ranged from .79 to .87 for milk yield and were .89 or .90 for fat yield. Parameter estimates using all data for bibariate and multivariate analyses were essentially the same. Correlated response from sire selection using the U.S.A. information increased with average HYSD Brazil: daughter response was greatest (.77 kg/kg for milk yield and .63 kg/kg for fat yield) based on information from U.S.A. half-sisters in low HYSD herds. Unequal daughter responses from unequal genetic (co) variances under restrictive Brazilian conditions support the presence of an interaction between genetype and environment, which affects the yield expectation of daughters of U.S.A. sires performing in Brazilian herd enrironments.

Book excerpt: This book is about resource allocation matters with the aim to further development thoughts and models on resource allocation applied to livestock production. It contains 18 chapters divided into 4 parts which discuss resources and resource allocation patterns, trade-offs, metabolic constraints to resource allocation and the process of homeorhesis with a special emphasis to homeorhesis during heat stress; the relationship between food intake and resources allocated to body maintenance, growth, reproduction and the immune response; the consequences of high production efficiency in pigs, poultry and dairy cattle and the consequences of improved production by means of biological engineering and options to include resource allocation matters in the breeding objective, animal welfare and in resource allocation modelling.

Book Water use in livestock production systems and supply chains Guidelines for assessment

Download or read book Water use in livestock production systems and supply chains Guidelines for assessment written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-08-14 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for Water Use Assessment, composed by 30 international experts, has developed guidelines on water footprinting for livestock supply chains. The mandate of the Water TAG was to provide recommendations to monitor the environmental performance of feed and livestock supply chains over time so that progress towards improvement targets can be measured; apply the guidelines for feed and water demand of small ruminants, poultry, large ruminants and pig supply chains; build on and go beyond the existing FAO LEAP guidelines; and pursue alignment with relevant International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards, specifically ISO 14040, ISO 14044 (ISO, 2006b and 2006a) and ISO 14046 (ISO, 2014). The guidelines on water use assessment include the impact assessment: the assessment of the environmental performance related to water use of a livestock-related system by assessing potential environmental impacts of blue water consumption following the water scarcity footprint according to the framework provided by ISO 14046 (ISO, 2014); and the assessment of the system’s productivity of green and blue water. The guidelines are thus intended to support the optimization of use of water resources and the identification of opportunities to decrease the potential impacts of water use in livestock production. The Water TAG guidance is relevant for livestock production systems, including feed production from croplands and grasslands, and production and processing of livestock products (cradle-to-gate). It addresses all livestock production systems and livestock species considered in existing LEAP animal guidelines: poultry, pig, small ruminant and large ruminant supply chains.

Book Tackling Climate Change Through Livestock

Download or read book Tackling Climate Change Through Livestock written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2013 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greenhouse gas emissions by the livestock sector could be cut by as much as 30 percent through the wider use of existing best practices and technologies. FAO conducted a detailed analysis of GHG emissions at multiple stages of various livestock supply chains, including the production and transport of animal feed, on-farm energy use, emissions from animal digestion and manure decay, as well as the post-slaughter transport, refrigeration and packaging of animal products. This report represents the most comprehensive estimate made to-date of livestocks contribution to global warming as well as the sectors potential to help tackle the problem. This publication is aimed at professionals in food and agriculture as well as policy makers.

Book The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018

Download or read book The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New evidence this year corroborates the rise in world hunger observed in this report last year, sending a warning that more action is needed if we aspire to end world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. Updated estimates show the number of people who suffer from hunger has been growing over the past three years, returning to prevailing levels from almost a decade ago. Although progress continues to be made in reducing child stunting, over 22 percent of children under five years of age are still affected. Other forms of malnutrition are also growing: adult obesity continues to increase in countries irrespective of their income levels, and many countries are coping with multiple forms of malnutrition at the same time – overweight and obesity, as well as anaemia in women, and child stunting and wasting.
