Book Identification of Laboratory Technique to Optimize Superpave HMA Surface Friction Characteristics

Download or read book Identification of Laboratory Technique to Optimize Superpave HMA Surface Friction Characteristics written by Karol J. Kowalski and published by . This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wet pavement friction is known to be one of the most important roadway safety parameters. In this research, frictional properties of flexible (asphalt) pavements were investigated. As a part of this study, a laboratory device to polish asphalt specimens was refined and a procedure to evaluate mixture frictional properties was proposed. Following this procedure, 46 different Superpave mixtures, one stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixture and one porous friction course (PFC) mixture were tested. In addition, 23 different asphalt and two concrete field sections were also tested for friction and noise. The results of both field and laboratory measurements were used to develop an International Friction Index (IFI)-based protocol for measurement of the frictional characteristics of asphalt pavements for laboratory friction measurements. Based on the results of the study, it appears the content of high friction aggregate should be 20% or more of the total aggregate blend when used with other, polish susceptible coarse aggregates; the frictional properties increased substantially as the friction aggregate content increased above 20%. Both steel slag and quartzite were found to improve the frictional properties of the blend, though steel slag had a lower polishing rate. In general, mixes containing soft limestone demonstrated lower friction values than comparable mixes with hard limestone or dolomite. Larger nominal maximum aggregate size mixes had better overall frictional performance than smaller sized mixes. In addition, mixes with higher fineness moduli generally had higher macrotexture and friction.

Book Development of a Friction Performance Test for Compacted Asphalt Mixtures

Download or read book Development of a Friction Performance Test for Compacted Asphalt Mixtures written by Rebecca S. McDaniel and published by . This book was released on 2018-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a previous JTRP project published in 2010, Identification of Laboratory Techniques to Optimize Superpave HMA Surface Friction Characteristics, a laboratory procedure to polish and test the frictional properties of asphalt mixtures was developed. Subsequently, the procedure has been used in other research efforts to evaluate the frictional properties of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and local (possibly marginal) aggregate blends and for other testing purposes. Most notably, the procedure has been developed into Indiana Test Method (ITM) 221, "Acceptance Procedures for HMA Surface Mixture Coarse Aggregates for ESAL ¿10,000,000." The method requires compaction, polishing and testing of 500 mm by 500 mm (20 in. by 20 in.) square slabs of asphalt mix. This research project was initiated based to explore the possibility of expanding use of the lab polishing/testing procedure to test gyratory specimens or field cores. It was envisioned that such a method could be used during mix design as a check on potential frictional properties and/or as a quality acceptance test. A means of fabricating a circular test ring from seven cylindrical specimens was developed and used to test five different plant produced mixtures. Comparisons of ITM 221 slabs, gyratory specimens compacted to different air void contents and field cores showed cylindrical specimens could yield similar results to the accepted slab test method.

Book Sustainability in Energy and Environment

Download or read book Sustainability in Energy and Environment written by Ann Rose Abraham and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability is a topic of pivotal importance today due to various environmental problems such as global warming, increasing pollution, and depletion of nonrenewable natural resources. This research-oriented book, Sustainability in Energy and Environment: Engineered Materials and Smart Computational Techniques, covers integrated sustainable designs for energy and environmental engineering as well as computer science. In this new title, the key components of energy are described, and the main elements of sustainability are introduced with an emphasis on sustainable development. The book also covers smart computational technologies in the domain of energy and environmental systems engineering. The book is broadly divided into three themes: energy, environment, and sustainable development. In the first section of this book, components of energy sustainability are described and examined with various other factors. Several case studies on enhancing energy sustainability and sustainable development are presented in section two. This volume will prove to be a valuable reference for professionals as well as research students interested in the fields of energy, environment, and sustainable development.

Book Laboratory Evaluation of Friction Loss and Compactability of Asphalt Mixtures

Download or read book Laboratory Evaluation of Friction Loss and Compactability of Asphalt Mixtures written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aimed to develop prediction models for friction loss and laboratory compaction of asphalt mixtures. In addition, the study evaluated the effect of compaction level and compaction method on skid resistance and the internal structure of asphalt mixtures. The predictive model for friction loss was developed based on parameters that describe aggregate texture and angularity before and after polishing, aggregate gradation, and polishing cycles in the laboratory. Squared-shape slabs of asphalt mixtures were prepared in the laboratory using a linear kneading compactor and polished using a wheel-polishing device. The frictional characteristics were measured after different intervals of polishing cycles. Mixtures with coarser aggregate gradation were found to have better skid resistance than those with fine aggregate gradation. The friction loss model was found to correlate very well with the experimental measurements. The predictive model for laboratory compaction of asphalt mixtures was developed based on parameters that describe aggregate shape characteristics, aggregate gradation, binder content, and binder properties at compaction temperatures. The researchers executed intensive laboratory experiments to quantify the effect of these parameters on the compaction of asphalt mixture in the laboratory. Two models that describe slope and intercept of the laboratory compaction curves of asphalt mixtures were developed. These models showed strong correlations between the predicted values and the measured ones. These models provide essential inputs to quantify the compaction effort needed to compact asphalt mixtures. In the last phase of this study, the researchers evaluated the effect of compaction level and compaction method on skid resistance and internal structure of asphalt pavements. The vibratory roller was found to yield a smoother surface than the static roller. In addition, the results confirmed that the vibratory roller was more effective in reducing the air voids than the static roller. Moreover, the test sections compacted using the vibratory roller had more uniform air void distribution compared to the test sections compacted using the static roller.
