Book excerpt: A survey was conducted of small urban and rural transit agencies regarding their use of alternative fuels and hybrid vehicles. Responses were received from 115 transit providers across the country, including 31 that use biodiesel, eight that use E85, 10 that use compressed natural gas (CNG), four that use propane, and 24 that own hybrid-electric vehicles. Larger agencies and those operating in urban areas tend to be more likely to adopt alternatives than smaller, rural providers. Improving public perception, reducing emissions, and reducing operating costs tend to be the greatest motivating factors for adopting these alternatives, in addition to political directives and incentives. Concerns about infrastructure development and costs, vehicle costs, maintenance, and fuel supply are the greatest deterrents to adoption. Those agencies that have adopted alternative fuels or hybrids have been mostly satisfied with their experience, but some problems were identified. An analysis of satisfaction with biodiesel indicates that agencies with a larger fleet size and those that have committed a larger percentage of their fleet to biodiesel have been more satisfied with the fuel. Findings provide useful information to transit operators considering adoption of alternative fuels and hybrids and to policy makers considering policies on alternative fuels and hybrids.

Book excerpt: Sustainable transportation plays a crucial role in mitigating environmental impacts, and this study examines two key aspects, namely working from home (WFH) and the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), in the context of promoting sustainable practices. The first part of this thesis focuses on how people's perceptions towards working from home have changed as a result of their experiences during COVID-19. To analyze these changes, a random parameter logit (RPL) model is developed based on a nationwide public dataset collected during the pandemic in the United States. Dependent variable of the model is constructed through comparing data from the first and last waves of the survey, and is defined to recognize those who plan to (1) increase, (2) decrease, or (3) keep in the same range their WFH level. The findings provide implications for understanding WFH behavior and guiding policies related to telework. The second part of this thesis focuses on Alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), and in particular electric vehicles (EVs) adoption behavior through population clustering and subsequent discrete choice models to uncover diverse motivations and barriers for AEVs adoption within different segments of the population. By identifying distinct groups of individuals with similar characteristics and preferences related to EV adoption, the study enables a deeper understanding of the factors influencing their adoption decision. The findings of this section highlight the significance of socio-demographic and economic factors in shaping individuals' preferences and choices related to sustainable transportation options. In conclusion, this study deepens our understanding of sustainable transportation behaviors and offers valuable insights for policymakers and organizations seeking to foster sustainable practices and reduce carbon emissions. Through its comprehensive approach, embracing analysis of working from home and EV adoption, this research contributes to the advancement of sustainable transportation and urban sustainability goals, providing guidance for developing effective strategies and initiatives.

This and the dangerous dependency on a few oil-exporting rogue states, coerce us to look for alternatives for fuelling cars and other vehicles. The motivation for consumers to buy an alternative fuel vehicle can be economic (e. g. rising petrol prices) or ideological (e. g. energy sustainability , pollution reduction, climate change ) (Byrne & Polonsky, 2012, p. 1535). This literature review will outline present findings regarding which alternative fuels possess the most potential and which factors drive consumer adoption of AFVs in general.

Book excerpt: This paper develops a dynamic, behavioral model with an explicit spatial structure to explore the co-evolutionary dynamics between infrastructure supply and vehicle demand. Vehicles and fueling infrastructure are complementarities and their chicken-egg dynamics are fundamental to the emergence of a self-sustaining alternative fuel vehicle market, but they are not well understood. The paper explores in-depth the dynamics resulting from local demand-supply interactions with strategically locating fuel-station entrants. The dynamics of vehicle and fuel infrastructure are examined under heterogeneous socio-economic/demographic conditions. The research reveals the formation of urban adoption clusters as an important mechanism for early market formation. However, while locally speeding diffusion, these same micro-mechanisms can obstruct the emergence of a large, self-sustaining market. Other feedbacks that significantly influence dynamics, such as endogenous topping-off behavior, are discussed. This model can be applied to develop targeted entrance strategies for alternative fuels in transportation. The roles of other powerful positive feedbacks arising from scale and scope economies, R&D, learning by doing, driver experience, and word of mouth are discussed.

The question addressed by this volume is one of the most timely and critical of the energy-related questions: How much longer can we rely on petroleum as a transportation fuel? This book, which includes a subset of papers commissioned for an unusual symposium (Alternative Transportation Fuels of the 1990s and Beyond, July 17-19, 1988), addresses the broader issues of transportation-fuel policy in regard to energy security, economic growth, and environmental quality. Book excerpt: As the United States imports more than half of its oil and overall consumption continues to climb, the 1992 Energy Policy Act established the goal of having "alternative fuels" replace at least ten percent of petroleum fuels used in the transportation sector by 2000, and at least thirty percent by 2010. Currently, alternative fuels consumed in Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFVs) account for less than one percent of total consumption of gasoline. This paper examines how alternative fuel E85 can be used to reverse that trend. In addition, this research paper will take a look at some of the ongoing government decisions concerning the use of the alternative fuel E85, and will discuss what policy makers might hold for the future in terms of the supply and demand of alternative fuels in the United States. This case study will be useful to all stakeholders involved in the transportation industry, including, but not limited to the government, policy makers, automakers, motorists, and researchers, eager to find a just balance with both a better transportation system and a healthy and clean environment.
