Book Ideas and Armaments

Download or read book Ideas and Armaments written by David M. Schwam-Baird and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1997 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the short space of 20 years, Brazil emerged from relative technological backwardness to become a major exporter of tanks, rockets and aircraft. This book examines the various ideologies, strategies and conflicts of Brazil's military leaders of the period that lay behind this phenomemon. Building upon two schools of thought, this book explains the phenomenal emergence of the Brazilian arms industry. The first school of thought attributes its success to the implementation of the National Security Doctrine by many of Brazil's leading officers. The other attributes the success to the pursuit of the corporate interests of the military. A discussion both of the articulated ideology found in the National Security Doctrine, and the corporate ideology of the Brazilian military, set against the development of governmental policy and factional in-fighting among groups of officers, will reveal that neither of these theories alone provide an adequate explanation. A third element, the corporate ideology of the civilian technicos, must also be taken into account.

Book excerpt: Given the enormous destructive capacity of precision weapons in the modern era and the inherent vulnerabilities of modern society to high technology attack, this book is more relevant today than when it was first written in the midst of the nuclear age, in 1953. Remaining one of the finest texts ever written on the history of warfare and weapons acquisition, this is a thorough and reliable work that should be a standard reference for acquisition managers and decision-makers, providing a guide to informed decision-making that reflects the experience and lessons of the past. Download or read book An Improbable War written by Holger Afflerbach and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First World War has been described as the "primordial catastrophe of the twentieth century." Arguably, Italian Fascism, German National Socialism and Soviet Leninism and Stalinism would not have emerged without the cultural and political shock of World War I. The question why this catastrophe happened therefore preoccupies historians to this day. The focus of this volume is not on the consequences, but rather on the connection between the Great War and the long 19th century, the short- and long-term causes of World War I. This approach results in the questioning of many received ideas about the war's causes, especially the notion of "inevitability."

Book Future War

Download or read book Future War written by John B. Alexander and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of warfare has changed! Like it or not, terrorism has established a firm foothold worldwide. Economics and environmental issues are inextricably entwined on a global basis and tied directly to national regional security. Although traditional threats remain, new, shadowy, and mercurial adversaries are emerging, and identifying and locating them is difficult. Future War, based on the hard-learned lessons of Bosnia, Haiti, Somalia, Panama, and many other trouble spots, provides part of the solution. Non-lethal weapons are a pragmatic application of force, not a peace movement. Ranging from old rubber bullets and tear gas to exotic advanced systems that can paralyze a country, they are essential for the preservation of peace and stability. Future War explains exactly how non-lethal electromagnetic and pulsed-power weapons, the laser and tazer, chemical systems, computer viruses, ultrasound and infrasound, and even biological entities will be used to stop enemies. These are the weapons of the future.

Book The Foundations of Modern Arms Control

Download or read book The Foundations of Modern Arms Control written by Robert M. Blum and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an international history of the foundation of modern arms control, highlighting the fact that the instrument is varied, resilient, successful, and enduring. The narrative begins after the Napoleonic wars when newly arisen peace movements focused on arbitration as a path to “ending the war system.” It moves on to the international community’s embrace of “total and complete disarmament” and then to its acceptance of more limited measures by 1968, including the agreements that remain in force today. The book connects the past to the present of multiple negotiations, successful and failed, and underlines how the peace movement increasingly influenced the national policy of the major Western powers, especially the United States. It also highlights the increasing diversification of arms control players, including women and people of color as well as the countries they represented. Based on original research in multinational records and the latest scholarship, the book illustrates the reasons multilateral arms control remains a key instrument of international relations. The chapters are organized both chronologically and thematically, with the result that they cover different amounts of time in order to encompass a given issue and to capture the development of particular threads. The main narrative evolves into a decadeslong quest for a global treaty on “general and complete disarmament,” which otherwise paces the book and shapes its chapters. This book will be of much interest to students of arms control, global governance, peace studies, and International Relations.
