The theory behind DSP is quite complex. Basically, DSP works by clarifying, or standardizing, the levels or states of a digital signal. ADSP circuit is able to differentiate between humanmade signals, which are orderly, and noise, which is inherently chaotic. Digital signal processing and analog signal processing are subfields of signal processing. DSP applications include audio and speech signal processing, sonar and radar signal processing, sensor array processing, spectral estimation, statistical signal processing, digital image processing, signal processing for communications, control of systems, biomedical signal processing, seismic data processing, among others. DSP algorithms have long been run on standard computers, as well as on specialized processors called digital signal processors, and on purpose-built hardware such as application-specific integrated circuit. Currently, there are additional technologies used for digital signal processing including more powerful general purpose microprocessors, field-programmable gate arrays, digital signal controllers (mostly for industrial applications such as motor control), and stream processors, among others. Digital signal processing can involve linear or nonlinear operations. Nonlinear signal processing is closely related to nonlinear system identification and can be implemented in the time, frequency, and spatio-temporal domains. The increasing use of computers has resulted in the increased use of, and need for, digital signal processing. Digital signal processing deals with a wide range of applications in which the implementation of high-performance systems to meet stringent requirements and performance constraints is receiving increasing attention both in the industrial and academic contexts. The purpose of this book entitled Design and Architectures for Digital Signal Processing is to deliver students, researchers, engineers and the industrial community with a guide to the latest advances in evolving concerns in the design and implementation of DSP systems for applicationspecific circuits and programmable devices.

Book excerpt: This book is intended to fill the gap between the "ideal precision" digital signal processing (DSP) that is widely taught, and the limited precision implementation skills that are commonly required in fixed-point processors and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). These skills are often neglected at the university level, particularly for undergraduates. We have attempted to create a resource both for a DSP elective course and for the practicing engineer with a need to understand fixed-point implementation. Although we assume a background in DSP, Chapter 2 contains a review of basic theory and Chapter 3 reviews random processes to support the noise model of quantization error. Chapter 4 details the binary arithmetic that underlies fixed-point processors and then introduces fractional format for binary numbers. Chapter 5 covers the noise model for quantization error and the effects of coefficient quantization in filters. Because of the numerical sensitivity of IIR filters, they are used extensively as an example system in both Chapters 5 and 6. Fortunately, the principles of dealing with limited precision can be applied to a wide variety of numerically sensitive systems, not just IIR filters. Chapter 6 discusses the problems of product roundoff error and various methods of scaling to avoid overflow. Chapter 7 discusses limit cycle effects and a few common methods for minimizing them. There are a number of simple exercises integrated into the text to allow you to test your understanding. Answers to the exercises are included in the footnotes. A number of MATLAB examples are provided in the text. They generally assume access to the Fixed-Point Toolbox. If you lack access to this software, consider either purchasing or requesting an evaluation license from The Mathworks. Book excerpt: The two volumes of Signal Processing are based on lectures delivered during a six week program held at the IMA from June 27 to August 5, 1988. The first two weeks of the program dealt with general areas and methods of Signal Pro cessing. The problem areas included imaging and analysis of recognition, x-ray crystallography, radar and sonar, signal analysis and 1-D signal processing, speech, vision, and VLSI implementation. The methods discussed included harmonic anal ysis and wavelets, operator theory, algorithm complexity, filtering and estimation, and inverse scattering. The topics of weeks three and four were digital filter, VLSI implementation, and integrable circuit modelling. In week five the concentration was on robust and nonlinear control with aerospace applications, and in week six the emphasis was on problems in radar, sonar and medical imaging. Because of the large overlap between the various one-week and two-week seg ments of the program, we found it more convenient to divide the material somewhat differently. Part I deals with general signal process theory and Part II deals with (i) application of signal processing, (ii) control theory related themes.
