Book excerpt: *A Newstatesman Book of the Year* ‘Nimble, vital, unexpectedly affecting’ Observer Bestselling travel writer Horatio Clare joins an icebreaker for a voyage through the ice-packs of the far north. 'We are celebrating a hundred years since independence this year: how would you like to travel on a government icebreaker?' A message from the Finnish embassy launches Horatio Clare on a voyage around an extraordinary country and an unearthly place, the frozen Bay of Bothnia, just short of the Arctic circle. Travelling with the crew of Icebreaker Otso, Horatio, whose last adventure saw him embedded on Maersk container vessels for the bestseller Down to the Sea in Ships, discovers stories of Finland, of her mariners and of ice. Aboard Otso Horatio gets to know the men who make up her crew, and explores Finland’s history and character. Surrounded by the extraordinary colours and conditions of a frozen sea, he also comes to understand something of the complexity and fragile beauty of ice, a near-miraculous substance which cools the planet, gives the stars their twinkle and which may hold all our futures in its crystals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We didn’t realize it at the time, but we were witnesses to the 'keyboard W scandal'. As you might remember, the new administration discovered vandalism and that the Ws had been removed on their computer keyboards. There was an investigation to find out who did it. It wasn’t us." "This mission was to take President Nixon’s car and support equipment to Shannon Ireland. This was not only my first flight as a copilot, but my first trip to Europe as well. It was fabulous." "The C-141 had one of the most amazing views in aviation. As I sat in the pilot’s seat I had a 180-degree view out the front of the aircraft. Huge picture windows all around showed me unbelievable sights. We would glide over European cities at night seeing the white lights of the buildings and the orange lights of the super highways." - From "Autobiography - And Other Funny Stories", a book chronicling the interesting life of Charles Huettner. With humor, intrigue, and a deep appreciation for the hand of God in his life, Charles writes about his 33 years serving in the USAF, the FAA, NASA, and working in the White House. During his career, he transformed airline pilot training, paved the way for civilian use of GPS, and held the position of Aviation Advisor at the White House on 9/11. Charles has performed an emergency landing in a T-37 jet, flown a hot air balloon over Atlanta Hartsfield Airport during rush hour, experienced the transition between the Clinton and Bush Administrations in the White House, and toured the world with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and former Congressman Bob Walker. Download or read book The Praetorian STARShip the untold story of the Combat Talon written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry Thigpen's study on the history of the Combat Talon is the first effort to tell the story of this wonderfully capable machine. This weapons system has performed virtually every imaginable tactical event in the spectrum of conflict and by any measure is the most versatile C-130 derivative ever produced. First modified and sent to Southeast Asia (SEA) in 1966 to replace theater unconventional warfare (UW) assets that were limited in both lift capability and speed the Talon I quickly adapted to theater UW tasking including infiltration and resupply and psychological warfare operations into North Vietnam. After spending four years in SEA and maturing into a highly respected UW weapons system the Joint Chief of Staff (JCS) chose the Combat Talon to lead the night low-level raid on the North Vietnamese prison camp at Son Tay. Despite the outcome of the operation the Talon I cemented its reputation as the weapons system of choice for long-range clandestine operations. In the period following the Vietnam War United States Air Force (USAF) special operations gradually lost its political and financial support which was graphically demonstrated in the failed Desert One mission into Iran. Thanks to congressional supporters like Earl Hutto of Florida and Dan Daniel of Virginia funds for aircraft upgrades and military construction projects materialized to meet the ever-increasing threat to our nation. Under the leadership of such committed hard-driven officers as Brenci Uttaro Ferkes Meller and Thigpen the crew force became the most disciplined in our Air Force. It was capable of penetrating hostile airspace at night in a low-level mountainous environment covertly to execute any number of unconventional warfare missions.

This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gripping and superb. This book will steal the night from you." —Laurence Gonzales, author of Deep Survival On January 17, 1913, alone and near starvation, Douglas Mawson, leader of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, was hauling a sledge to get back to base camp. The dogs were gone. Now Mawson himself plunged through a snow bridge, dangling over an abyss by the sledge harness. A line of poetry gave him the will to haul himself back to the surface. Mawson was sometimes reduced to crawling, and one night he discovered that the soles of his feet had completely detached from the flesh beneath. On February 8, when he staggered back to base, his features unrecognizably skeletal, the first teammate to reach him blurted out, "Which one are you?" This thrilling and almost unbelievable account establishes Mawson in his rightful place as one of the greatest polar explorers and expedition leaders. It is illustrated by a trove of Frank Hurley’s famous Antarctic photographs, many never before published in the United States.

Download or read book Leading Small Groups written by Chris Surratt and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading a small group can literally change the world. We have been commissioned to make disciples who make disciples, and Jesus showed us that the best way to carry that out is through small groups of believers. Just like the first-century church, small groups form the foundation to take the gospel to the ends of the earth. Chris Surratt, Discipleship and Small Groups Specialist for Lifeway Christian Resources, and author of Small Groups for the Rest of Us, wants to help you get from here to there. Regardless of whether you have never lead a small group or have been leading one for years, all of us want to know how to create environments where spiritual growth takes place and communities are changed. Leading Small Groups walks the reader through the stages of gathering, launching, leading, and multiplying a gospel-centered small group. There are also follow-up questions for discussion and reflection at the end of each section, and practical resources that can be implemented immediately by the small group leader. Jesus left his followers with a task—the Great Commission. This book will help small group leaders and churches in their obedience to this task.
