Book Ice Forces on Vertical Piles

Download or read book Ice Forces on Vertical Piles written by D. E. Nevel and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of force that an ice sheet can apply to a vertical pile was tested by lowering a hydraulic ram device into a hole cut in an existing sheet. The device had a large base and shoved a relatively narrow vertical pile in a horizontal direction. Test variables were: pile widths - 1.5 in. to 36.7 in.; pile shapes-flat, round, 45 and 90 wedges; ice thickness - 2.6 in. to 8.8 in.; and ram speed - 0.07 in./sec to 18.75 in./sec; but not all shapes and sizes were tested at all speeds. Air temperature was 20 F( -6.7 C). Forces and displacements were measured electronically. The findings are presented as a table of test results and as bar graphs of the resultant ice pressures versus the pile width-to-ice-thickness ratio, pile width and shape combination and pile velocity. The types of failures in the ice sheet were classified as crushing, splitting, buckling, bending, and creeping. The ice sheet generally withstood a high initial load followed by several lower peak load levels. The maximum ice pressure measured was 610 psi for a 12.6-in.-diam round pile in 8.4-in.-thick ice. Book Ice Forces on Vertical Piles

Download or read book Ice Forces on Vertical Piles written by Donald E. Nevel and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The force that floating ice sheets can exert on vertical piles is important to the design of both military and civilian structures. Present design codes call for 400 psi as the crushing strength of ice without regard to the influencing factors and their variation. The forces which drive the ice into the structure can be water currents, wind, or thermal expansion. These driving forces may be large enough the cause the ice to fail at or near the surface. The purpose of this research is to define this limiting force level and gain a better understanding of the failure process in the ice. (Author).

Book An Investigation of Ice Forces on Vertical Structures

Download or read book An Investigation of Ice Forces on Vertical Structures written by Ken-ichi Hirayama and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ice forces are the principal concern in designing offshore structures such as drilling platforms, transloading points, or bridge piers in Arctic regions. Although some results have been obtained by field measurements in recent years, there are still significant gaps in the knowledge of ice forces on structures. In order to fill some of these gaps, the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research has undertaken model studies on the investigation of ice forces on vertical piles. Model techniques for the study of ice-breaking phenomena have been developed, and the similarity between the model indications and prototype conditions has been demonstrated. Tests on the relationships between ice forces (ice strength) and pile diameter, ice thickness, and relative velocity (strain rate) between ice and structure have been completed. The experimental results were satisfactorily explained by a theoretical approach, and the combination of these relationships led to a basic empirical formula for the calculation of the maximum penetration strength for a circular pile, which agrees with available field measurements and also in part with model investigations in Russia. The suggested formula was modified for application to different structural shapes and degree of contact between ice and structure as well as for application to the indentation case of pile-ice interaction. Further studies are necessary to investigate the effect of ice temperature, scale effects and also the influence of salinity on the ice forces on structures. (Au)"--ASTIS online database.

Book Ice Force Measurements on the Pembina River Alberta Canada

Download or read book Ice Force Measurements on the Pembina River Alberta Canada written by F. D. Haynes and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just before spring breakup in 1972, 23 in situ tests were conducted on the Pembina River, in Alberta, Canada, to measure ice forces. These tests simulated an ice sheet pushing against a bridge pier. The apparatus utilized a hydraulic ram to push a 5 1/2-in. (14.0-cm)-wide vertical pile section horizontally against the ice sheet, which varied from 11.5 to 19.5 in. (29.2 to 49.5 cm) in thickness. The velocity of the pile was varied from 0.07 to 21 in./sec (0.18 to 53.3 cm/sec) by hydraulic flow control valves. Both flat and round piles were used to represent the pier. Some tests began with the piles a few inches away from the ice sheet, whose edge was cut flat. Other tests began with the pile in contact with the ice sheet. For some of the round pile tests, augered holes were used to provide better initial contact. These in situ test results were compared with the ice force measurements made by other workers on a nearby bridge pier during ice breakup. The in situ test ice forces were about 50% higher than the bridge pier test results. This disagreement was caused by a difference between the sizes of the piles and the size of the pier and a three-day warming of the ice before the ice impacted against the pier. (Author).

Book Determine Forces Required to Uplift Marine Piles Due to Water Level Changes

Download or read book Determine Forces Required to Uplift Marine Piles Due to Water Level Changes written by F. T. Christensen and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All previous work on uplifting ice forces, theoretical as well as experimental, has focused on the forces necessary to extract a pile from an ice sheet in one pull-out. In the present test series, the piles were cycled up and down in hundreds of cycles in order to stimulate natural conditions throughout a winter. The results of this program may be summarized as follows: a) Evaluation of theoretical formulae for predicting the ice-induced vertical forces in a pile; b) Evaluation of theoretical formulae for predicting the ice-induced vertical forces in an interacting group of piles; c) Laboratory verification of successive processes responsible for step-wise jacking of piles by ice; d) Establishment of a theory on the refreezing of cracks, and derivation of an empirical formula to predict the relative flexural strength of a particularly refrozen crack.

Book Physics and Mechanics of Ice

Download or read book Physics and Mechanics of Ice written by P. Tryde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the programme of the symposium was written: "The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Me chanics has taken the initiative to organize the sympo sium. As the name of IUTAM implies, the organization brings forward achievements within the field of theore tical mechanics for application in science and engineer ing. According to the rules of IUTAM that only invited persons can attend, all lecturers and participants have been ap pOinted by the members of the scientific committee. To facilitate contact among the attending persons, it has been decided to restrict the total number to 85 persons including the lecturers. Only one session is planned, making it possible for everybody to attend all lectures. Most scientists and engineers have realized that the knowledge attained by extensive basic research is essen tial in order to solve technological problems. In the process of acquiring this knowledge we often fail to un derstand that scientific progress is only achieved by two main principles: (1) By studying the scientific litera ture and applying or improving the theories in order to predict behaviour and forces correctly, or (2) by re jecting existing theories and developing new ways to cope with the problem, resulting in a more differenti ated and, hopefully, more exact theory. Ice seems to be a simple material, but it is in fact so complex and strange that it is only in the latest dec ades that we have come to know some of the natural laws governing its behaviour.
