Book The Application of Centrifugal Modeling to Determine Ice Forces on Isolated Circular Structures

Download or read book The Application of Centrifugal Modeling to Determine Ice Forces on Isolated Circular Structures written by Herbert F. Clough and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A test system was developed and used to investigate ice/structure interaction with centrifugal modeling. The test system was designed to perform two main functions: (1) create a uniform ice sheet, and (2) drive a model structure through the ice sheet at a constant speed. Both of these functions were required to be carried out while on board a centrifuge. The ice sheets were created by applying vaporized liquid nitrogen to the water surface in a model test container. Freezing test results were used to establish a linear relationship between ice thickness and the square-root of the product of time and temperature. The relationship was used to create ice sheets of predetermined thickness. An electric motor mounted in the model test container was able to withstand the large inertial stresses associated with accelerations up to 100 gravities. The motor drove the model structure through the ice sheet at a constant velocity. Two small scale model test programs were conducted to determine ice forces on offshore structures and the usefulness of the centrifugal modeling technique to investigate ice/structure interaction problems. The first program was designed to investigate ice crushing forces against isolated vertical cylindrical piles. The model pile test results show good agreement with the results of other research programs. The second test program was designed to investigate ice bending forces against frictionless rigid conical structures. The test results indicate that centrifugal modeling may provide a means for scaling ice density for small scale model tests. Further, a comparison of the test results with the results of a theoretical analysis using plasticity theory shows good agreement.

Book Ice Forces on Flat Vertical Indentors Pushed Through Floating Ice Sheets

Download or read book Ice Forces on Flat Vertical Indentors Pushed Through Floating Ice Sheets written by Naoki Nakazawa and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structures placed in an ice environment should be able to withstand the ice forces that are produced by the motion of a floating ice sheet. To observe the crushing failure of ice and to characterize the magnitude and nature of ice forces, an experimental study was conducted by pushing vertical, flat indentors through floating ice sheets made up of freshwater, columnar ice. Depending on the velocity of the indentor, ductile or brittle behavior of ice was observed. Microcracks and macrocracks were observed during the tests. The energy used to produce the maximum ice force was found to be approximately the same for different indentor velocities. The positions of the resultant forces were found to be in the center of the contact area. The area of the ice damaged by the first peak loading of the identor was about the same, even when the indentor velocities were different. Acoustic emission signals were measured during indentation experiments, and these were found to correlate with the ice force that produces strain and microcracking in the ice. Keywords: Ice mechanics; Cracking/fracturing; Coastal engineering; Offshore structures; Load distribution; Crushing; Effective pressure; Freshwater ice; Ice forces; Laboratory tests; Macrocracking; Microcracking. Book Ice Mechanics for Geophysical and Civil Engineering Applications

Download or read book Ice Mechanics for Geophysical and Civil Engineering Applications written by Ryszard Staroszczyk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-29 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the concepts and tools of ice mechanics, together with examples of their application in the fields of glaciology, climate research and civil engineering in cold regions. It starts with an account of the most important physical properties of sea and polar ice treated as an anisotropic polycrystalline material, and reviews relevant field observations and experimental measurements. The book focuses on theoretical descriptions of the material behaviour of ice in different stress, deformation and deformation-rate regimes on spatial scales ranging from single ice crystals, those typical in civil engineering applications, up to scales of thousands of kilometres, characteristic of large, grounded polar ice caps in Antarctica and Greenland. In addition, it offers a range of numerical formulations based on either discrete (finite-element, finite-difference and smoothed particle hydrodynamics) methods or asymptotic expansion methods, which have been used by geophysicists, theoretical glaciologists and civil engineers to simulate the behaviour of ice in a number of problems of importance to glaciology and civil engineering, and discusses the results of these simulations. The book is intended for scientists, engineers and graduate students interested in mathematical and numerical modelling of a wide variety of geophysical and civil engineering problems involving natural ice.

Book Forces Generated by High Velocity Impact of Ice on a Rigid Structure

Download or read book Forces Generated by High Velocity Impact of Ice on a Rigid Structure written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-24 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted to measure the impact forces generated by cylindrical ice projectiles striking a relatively rigid target. Two types of ice projectiles were used, solid clear ice and lower density fabricated ice. Three forms of solid clear ice were tested: single crystal, poly-crystal, and "rejected" poly-crystal (poly-crystal ice in which defects were detected during inspection.) The solid ice had a density of approximately 56 lb/cu ft (0.9 gm/cu cm). A second set of test specimens, termed "low density ice" was manufactured by molding shaved ice into a cylindrical die to produce ice with a density of approximately 40 lb/cu ft (0.65 gm/cu cm). Both the static mechanical characteristics and the crystalline structure of the ice were found to have little effect on the observed transient response. The impact forces generated by low density ice projectiles, which had very low mechanical strength, were comparable to those of full density solid ice. This supports the hypothesis that at a velocity significantly greater than that required to produce fracture in the ice, the mechanical properties become relatively insignificant, and the impact forces are governed by the shape and mass of the projectile.
