Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the Proceedings from the First International Conference on Ibogaines, held in November of 1999 at New York University's School of Medicine. In essence, it presents significant new data on neurobiological, clinical, sociocultural, and policy aspects of ibogaine. Ibogaine is a natural product derived from the bark of the root of the African shrub Tabernathe iboga. It has a history of use as a medicinal and ceremonial agent in West Central Africa, and has been alleged to be effective as a treatment for substance dependence. The study of Ibogaine may shed light on the neurobiology of addiction and lead to the development of new medication for the treatment of addiction. Currently, there is lack of formal approval for the use of ibogaine, and the demand of the addicts themselves has led to a distinctive unofficial network which has provided ibogaine treatment in non-medical settings. If critical safety concerns can be adequately addressed, ibogaine may provide an inexpensive and practical treatment approach, well adapted to environments where resources are severely limited and there is pressing need for clinical services for heroin addicts, such as Eastern Europe. This is a paperback edition of Volume 56 of The Alkaloids (ISBN: 0-12-469556-6) edited by Geoffrey A. Cordell, University of Illinois at Chicago, U.S.A.

Book excerpt: The Alkaloids: Chemistry and Physiology, Volume VIII: The Indole Alkaloids focuses on the advances in the chemistry of indole alkaloids. This book discusses the tryptamine and its derivatives, postulated biosyntheses of the physostigmine ring system, and source of the alkaloids. The simple lysergic acid amides, mass spectra of mitraphylline and rhynchophylline, and alkaloids of gelsemium species are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the determination of the structure of the alkaloids, stereochemistry of cinchonamine, dimeric alkaloids of calabash curare, and chemistry of the reserpine group. Other topics include the biology of ergot and short history of its active principles up to the discovery of ergotamine. This volume is recommended for chemists and researchers interested in indole alkaloids.

Book excerpt: A Course in Organic Chemistry Advanced Section, Volume 27: Indole Alkaloids: An Introduction to the Enamine Chemistry of Natural Products describes the chemistry of selected alkaloids that contain indolic or closely related nuclei. Some five hundred of these compounds have been obtained from about three hundred plants mostly of the family Apocynaceae. This book is composed of 12 chapters that specifically cover the chemistry of the complex indoles. The introductory chapters deal with the origin, isolation, characterization, basic chemistry, and simple derivatives of indole alkaloids. The remaining chapters examine the biogenesis, basic chemistry, stereochemistry, and structure of selected complex alkaloids of various origins. These chapters include tetrahydro-?-carboline, strychnos, iboga, picralima, and eburnamine alkaloids, cinchonamine, quinamine, and ajmaline-sarpagine bases. This text is of great value to organic chemists and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued.

Book Evolution of Synthetic Pathways

Download or read book Evolution of Synthetic Pathways written by Tse-Lok Ho and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic synthesis is essential to creating new materials. While synthetic design has reached a high level of sophistication, many details remain unplannable. To become proficient in organic synthesis, one must study case histories in the same way as a lawyer does. Attention must be paid to overcoming stumbling blocks as one prepares himself to meet future challenges of similar kinds. This book discusses many important syntheses, with emphasis on the need for detours and ways leading back to the main pathways. It thus focuses on one of the most important aspects of organic synthesis, which virtually none of the synoptic literature addresses.

Book Principles of Organic Synthesis

Download or read book Principles of Organic Synthesis written by Richard O.C. Norman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed for those who have had no more than a brief introduction to organic chemistry and who require a broad understanding of the subject. The book is in two parts. In Part I, reaction mechanism is set in its wider context of the basic principles and concepts that underlie chemical reactions: chemical thermodynamics, structural theory, theories of reaction kinetics, mechanism itself and stereochemistry. In Part II these principles and concepts are applied to the formation of particular types of bonds, groupings, and compounds. The final chapter in Part II describes the planning and detailed execution of the multi-step syntheses of several complex, naturally occurring compounds.
