Book IBM BladeCenter Virtual Fabric Solutions

Download or read book IBM BladeCenter Virtual Fabric Solutions written by David Watts and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deployment of server virtualization technologies in data centers requires significant efforts in providing sufficient network I/O bandwidth to satisfy the demand of virtualized applications and services. For example, every virtualized system can host several dozen network applications and services, and each of these services requires certain bandwidth (or speed) to function properly. Furthermore, because of different network traffic patterns relevant to different service types, these traffic flows may interfere with each other, leading to serious network problems including the inability of the service to perform its functions. The IBM℗ʼ Virtual Fabric solution for IBM BladeCenter addresses these issues. The solution is based on the IBM BladeCenter H chassis with a 10-Gb Converged Enhanced Ethernet infrastructure built on 10-Gb Ethernet switch modules in the chassis and the Emulex or Broadcom Virtual Fabric Adapters in each blade server.

Book IBM Data Center Networking Planning for Virtualization and Cloud Computing

Download or read book IBM Data Center Networking Planning for Virtualization and Cloud Computing written by Michele Girola and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enterprise data center has evolved dramatically in recent years. It has moved from a model that placed multiple data centers closer to users to a more centralized dynamic model. The factors influencing this evolution are varied but can mostly be attributed to regulatory, service level improvement, cost savings, and manageability. Multiple legal issues regarding the security of data housed in the data center have placed security requirements at the forefront of data center architecture. As the cost to operate data centers has increased, architectures have moved towards consolidation of servers and applications in order to better utilize assets and reduce "server sprawl." The more diverse and distributed the data center environment becomes, the more manageability becomes an issue. These factors have led to a trend of data center consolidation and resources on demand using technologies such as virtualization, higher WAN bandwidth technologies, and newer management technologies. The intended audience of this book is network architects and network administrators. In this IBM® Redbooks® publication we discuss the following topics: The current state of the data center network The business drivers making the case for change The unique capabilities and network requirements of system platforms The impact of server and storage consolidation on the data center network The functional overview of the main data center network virtualization and consolidation technologies The new data center network design landscape

Book Storage and Network Convergence Using FCoE and iSCSI

Download or read book Storage and Network Convergence Using FCoE and iSCSI written by Sangam Racherla and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with servers and networking infrastructure, networked storage is one of the fundamental components of a modern data center. Because storage networking has evolved over the past two decades, the industry has settled on the basic storage networking technologies. These technologies are Fibre Channel (FC) storage area networks (SANs), Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI)-based Ethernet attachment, and Ethernet-based network-attached storage (NAS). Today, lossless, low-latency, high-speed FC SANs are viewed as the high-performance option for networked storage. iSCSI and NAS are viewed as lower cost, lower performance technologies. The advent of the 100 Gbps Ethernet and Data Center Bridging (DCB) standards for lossless Ethernet give Ethernet technology many of the desirable characteristics that make FC the preferred storage networking technology. These characteristics include comparable speed, low latency, and lossless behavior. Coupled with an ongoing industry drive toward better asset utilization and lower total cost of ownership, these advances open the door for organizations to consider consolidating and converging their networked storage infrastructures with their Ethernet data networks. Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) is one approach to this convergence, but 10-Gbps-enabled iSCSI also offers compelling options for many organizations with the hope that their performance can now rival that of FC. This IBM® Redbooks® publication is written for experienced systems, storage, and network administrators who want to integrate the IBM System Networking and Storage technology successfully into new and existing networks. This book provides an overview of today's options for storage networking convergence. It reviews the technology background for each of these options and then examines detailed scenarios for them by using IBM and IBM Business Partner convergence products.

Book IP Multicast Protocol Configuration

Download or read book IP Multicast Protocol Configuration written by Sangam Racherla and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most common transmission scheme used in networks today is unicast, which represents "one-to-one" transmission with one sender and one receiver. Sometimes there is a need for one host to send packets that are received by multiple hosts. The problem with implementing this kind of transmission using unicast is that the stream of packets must be replicated as many times as there are receivers. IP Multicast addresses the problem by intelligently sending only one stream of packets and then replicating the stream when it reaches the target domain that includes multiple receivers or reaches a necessary bifurcation point leading to different receiver domains. In this IBM® RedpapersTM publication, we introduce principles of IP Multicast and describe the IPv4 addressing used for multicast. We discuss the protocols that are used to implement multicast in an IP network and then provide the general IP Multicast configuration procedures and then presents IP Multicast configuration in a sample network using IBM System Networking Ethernet Switches. We conclude this paper with command references that include all commands and their parameters for configuration of multicast protocols and features. After understanding the basics of how to configure IP Multicast for the networking scenario described in this paper, IT network professionals will be able replicate a similar design and configuration to suit their network infrastructure.
