Download or read book Iodine Deficiency in Europe written by F. Delange and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disorders induced by iodine deficiency affect at least one billion people. Because ofits effects on brain development, iodinedeficiency is the single most preventable cause of mental retardation in the world. Therefore, the United Nations and the Heads of State of almost all the world's countries represented at the Summit for Children in 1990 adopted resolutions to eradicate the disorders induced by iodine deficiency (IDD) by the year 2000. For geological and socio-economic reasons, most of the populations affected by iodine deficiency disorders live in isolated and usually mountainous areas, in pre industrialized parts ofthe world. The problem of iodine deficiency in Europe has been greatly underestimated in the last decades. After the remarkable studies on the effects of iodine deficiency and their prevention and correction in Switzerland, IDD was generally considered no longer a significant public health problem in Europe. However, surveys carried out in the early 1980's under the auspices of the European Thyroid Association, clearly demonstrated the persistence of moderately or even severely affected areas. These surveys also highlighted the lack ofinformation about large parts ofEurope, especially its eastern part. It is only quite recently, following major changes in international relations and thanks to the support of UNICEF, WHO, the International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders and the European Thyroid Association, that more extensive surveys have been conducted in several parts of Europe hitherto almost unexplored. These surveys showed that most European countries were iodine deficient.

Book International Law and Pollution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Barstow Magraw
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2016-11-11
  • ISBN : 1512804002
  • Pages : 388 pages

Download or read book International Law and Pollution written by Daniel Barstow Magraw and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of the essays in this book, the threat posed to our environment by various sources and types of pollution, is a matter of serious and growing concern. The contributors are leading international experts from a variety of legal systems and backgrounds and include Andronico Adede, Ian Brownlie, Pierre-Marie Dupuy, Johan Lammers, and Paul Szasz. International Law and Pollution provides an overview of international legal principles and institutional efforts relevant to pollution and then focuses on two particularly acute problems: nuclear pollution and acid rain. A variety of substantive issues must be confronted in order to deal with the full range of international pollution, and various institutional approaches must be utilized in the prevention, cleanup, and compensation efforts. For example, pollution from nuclear accidents results from a single event, whereas acid rain is a product of chronic emissions; the legal and policy concerns differ accordingly. In the overview, Daniel Barstow Magraw discusses fundamental concepts of international pollution, analytic distinctions among types of pollution, paradigmatic responses to pollution, and the relationship among environmental protection, economic development, and human rights. Other authors examine the existing and evolving principles of customary international law relevant to pollution, the U.N. International Law Commission's work on international liability and international watercourses, and a practitioner's perspective. The chapters on nuclear pollution analyze the conventional regimes and customary principles applicable to this field (including the Chernobyl disaster) and the determination and measurement of damages. Finally, the chapters on acid precipitation summarize the scientific background of the problem and present the multilayered European efforts to control acid rain as well as the Canada-United States acid rain controversy. International Law and Pollution will be of interest to scholars and students of environmental law and international law.

Book International Organizations

Download or read book International Organizations written by Giuseppe Schiavone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic changes in the world order since 1992 - the continuing struggle in the former Yugoslavia, the creation of the World Trade Organization, the tentative steps towards European Union - have led to major revisions of Professor Schiavone's International Organizations . New entries, including the G-7, G-24, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, have been added. On the 50th anniversary of the UN special annexes on peace-keeping agencies and major resolutions are now included. The introductory essay contains an overall view of the basic features of the law of international organizations and a survey of their historical development and outstanding problems, helping the reader to set the organizations in their proper context, be it global or sectional. The main body of the book consists of alphabetically arranged entries for over 200 organizations - from the UN to specialised agencies and regional bodies in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Each entry is broken up into sub-headings such as Purpose, Structure, Origin and Development, and Activities. Specific data concerning addresses, principal officers, main periodic publications and a short list of works of reference are provided with each entry. Ease of access to all entries is expedited by an index of acronyms and full names. Membership charts, a table of foundation dates and a classified index complete the volume.
